Criticize China? Better Watch Your Back
It's a good thing CNN's Jack Cafferty isn't in China. In all likelihood he would be placed under arrest and hauled into prison for a lengthy sentence.
Cafferty's crime? He dared refer to the the Chinese government as 'goons' and 'thugs' in response to the regime's treatment of the people of Tibet.
The remarks were spoken from the safety of CNN's headquarters during the network's daily broadcast of 'The Situation Room. Cafferty quipped, 'I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years.'
This prompted the Chinese Foreign Ministry to summon CNN's Beijing bureau chief in order to demand an apology.
As usual, the regime's spin on the incident is that Cafferty was referring to 'the Chinese people as a whole' and not merely to the regime. According to the ruling Communist Party officials such words are tantamount to 'verbal terrorism' against the Chinese people and indicates an anti-Chinese bias at CNN.
Officials at CNN, however, refuse an apology. Cafferty himself stated that he was in no way referring to the Chinese people but only to the Chinese government, and that he apologized if anyone thought otherwise.
The entire display, however, is classic Chinese Communist reaction to criticism. Not only does the regime fail to recognize the value of free speech but it is particularly harsh toward speech, either written or spoken, that in any way portrays the government in a negative light.
In other words, if you dare criticize the government, it's off to jail with you.
Most of the Chinese people understand this, including Chinese-Americans. Some, however, view the American ideal of freedom of speech as a totally foreign concept that is to be devalued. It is extremely important for such person to understand that in this country freedom of speech was first envisioned to protect in particular any speech that is critical of government.
This is part of our understanding of basic, inherent human rights and liberties.
Thus, until the Chinese government understands that human liberty is the pinnacle of human progress, most of us in the States will always view the regime as 'the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the past 50 years.'
I will even go further than Mr. Cafferty. China's government is tyrannical. It suppresses the liberties of the Chinese people and holds them in the heavy grip of oppression.
Therefore, it is a rogue regime that is worthy of nothing but the free world's disdain and condemnation.

Obama's Failure in Philly
Make no mistake, I have no fish to fry in this shindig. I truly believe that Hillary Clinton is, as Dick Morris says, 'the most dangerous woman in America,' and that Barack 'Pennsylvanians-Marry-Their-Cousins-And-Take-Baths-Only-Once-Per-Month' Obama is worse than she is.
Thus, I have absolutely no reason to favor one over the other.
The Philly Debate on Wednesday night, however, demands an assessment of Obama, given his glaring misstatements and the resulting drop in the polls.
The question, therefore, is, did Obama redeem himself in the eyes of most Pennsylvanians since he all but called them a bunch of imbecilic religious fanatics with guns?
The answer in a word is 'No.'
Obama inadvertently opened a small and shortlived window through which we could see his true feelings and views when he made those now-infamous remarks in San Francisco. He is an elitist who cannot connect with the common people throughout the heartland of America.
And even worse, he exhibits an air of snobbery about the type of religious expression chosen by the vast American heartland--a spirituality that is worlds apart from his ultra-liberal United Church of Christ in Chicago. Further, this snobbery is expressed toward the gun culture in which most of these folk participate.
This is simply a fact of life that is as inherent to who Obama is as his bi-racial upbringing.
Unfortunately for him, the words Obama chose to express his views were patently paternalistic and bigoted. And he must have forgotten that he is running against a Clinton when he uttered them.
He certainly didn't forget during the debate Wednesday night. Hillary made certain that Obama was forced to deal with his views in front of the cameras. She confronted him relentlessly throughout the debate, and in the end she essentially had him for lunch.
In short, Obama has played right into the Clinton playbook. It doesn't matter in 'the Clinton way' how hypocritical Bill or Hillary can be since both have more skeletons in the closet than a mob boss. The only thing that matters is to seize the gaffes and mistakes of the opponent, in this case Obama, and milk them for all they are worth.
It isn't that Obama didn't have it coming. He fully deserved every bit of righteous indignation and shock that Hillary sent bouncing his way.
But the scenario that led to tonight's slugfest is prime breeding ground for a very effective Clinton knockout. These sorts of things are tailor-made for Hillary, and she wasted no time using it to her advantage.
Thus, my assessment is not so much that Clinton 'won' but that Obama lost badly. The Pennsylvania primary is essentially over, and the only thing left to see is how badly she beats him.

The Frightening Side of McCain
My firm belief has always been that John McCain is NOT just as bad as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. Though I have often taken the Arizona Republican to task on issues such as immigration and the environment, in no way is he in the same ballpark with the abject Socialists who are running on the Democratic side.
McCain has an acceptable record on the economy and taxes, and his views on U.S. foreign policy, national defense, and terrorism are exceptional.
He does, however, possess a frightening side that shows its ugly head from time to time--not often but often enough to give conservatives a case of the quivers.
On Tuesday of this week McCain stated that he joins Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in calling for the closing of the so-called 'gun show loophole.' As if this were not frightening enough, McCain is on record supporting the shutting down of gun shows altogether.
Gun shows, gun shops, online gun dealers, and ammo and firearms manufacturers are not the source of any problem whatsoever. The criminals are the source of ALL of the problems.
Liberals, however, are not willing to do what is necessary to address the problem of the criminals who commit the crimes. It is much easier to make it the guns' fault and pass a pot full of laws ad infinitum that usually do more to restrict the activities of law-abiding citizens than curtail crime.
We can expect Democratic candidates for President to support such terribly misguided and politically-motivated schemes. They are too dependent on the support and money of extremists who in actuality wish to ban guns entirely.
But for McCain to join in with the blathering balderall of the Left is simply an outrage, just as is his support for environmentalist extremists and illegal aliens.
When Fred Thompson bowed out of the race for the GOP nomination, I wrote that McCain would have to work hard to earn my vote and support.
Although he has made some progress on that count, he has not gone far enough by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the candidate has a pattern of unleashing these statements that scare conservatives just when they are beginning to get comfortable enough with him to lend him their support.
True, I have had some very positive things to say about McCain of late. The explanation is not far to find. When compared to the rank stench of the two neo-commie gun-grabbers on the Democratic side, McCain smells as fresh as the mountain air in the Spring.
However, the candidate still has some hard work to do to satisfy this conservative. I have a strong hunch that millions of conservatives feel the same way.
So, what will it take for us to come around to his side? It's very simple--when McCain stops scaring the bejeepers out of us.
The question is, is anyone in the McCain camp listening, and do they care?
McCain has an acceptable record on the economy and taxes, and his views on U.S. foreign policy, national defense, and terrorism are exceptional.
He does, however, possess a frightening side that shows its ugly head from time to time--not often but often enough to give conservatives a case of the quivers.
On Tuesday of this week McCain stated that he joins Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in calling for the closing of the so-called 'gun show loophole.' As if this were not frightening enough, McCain is on record supporting the shutting down of gun shows altogether.
Gun shows, gun shops, online gun dealers, and ammo and firearms manufacturers are not the source of any problem whatsoever. The criminals are the source of ALL of the problems.
Liberals, however, are not willing to do what is necessary to address the problem of the criminals who commit the crimes. It is much easier to make it the guns' fault and pass a pot full of laws ad infinitum that usually do more to restrict the activities of law-abiding citizens than curtail crime.
We can expect Democratic candidates for President to support such terribly misguided and politically-motivated schemes. They are too dependent on the support and money of extremists who in actuality wish to ban guns entirely.
But for McCain to join in with the blathering balderall of the Left is simply an outrage, just as is his support for environmentalist extremists and illegal aliens.
When Fred Thompson bowed out of the race for the GOP nomination, I wrote that McCain would have to work hard to earn my vote and support.
Although he has made some progress on that count, he has not gone far enough by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the candidate has a pattern of unleashing these statements that scare conservatives just when they are beginning to get comfortable enough with him to lend him their support.
True, I have had some very positive things to say about McCain of late. The explanation is not far to find. When compared to the rank stench of the two neo-commie gun-grabbers on the Democratic side, McCain smells as fresh as the mountain air in the Spring.
However, the candidate still has some hard work to do to satisfy this conservative. I have a strong hunch that millions of conservatives feel the same way.

Global Backlash Building Against Biofuels
Members of the environmentalist movement suddenly find themselves on the defensive these days as news comes of a growing global backlash against biofuels such as ethanol.
Some critics have even tagged the term 'a crime against humanity' to describe the push by environmentalists and the politicians who agree with them to switch to biofuels, due to the toll such a move takes on the world's food supply at a time when global hunger is on the rise.
Consumers all over the world are already feeling the effects of the environmentalist vision--skyrocketing food prices. In the United States food prices are rising at the fastest rate in 17 years.
The critics' view of the fiasco has some merit. How noble, honorable, or ethical is it to take land and commodities that were once used for food in order to produce fuel?
And let's not forget that food shortages resulting from the production of biofuels do nothing but raise the prices of food to unbelievable levels. The law of supply and demand is most evident here. As supplies dwindle and demand increases, prices skyrocket.
Further, let's also not forget that the blame for this crisis can be laid directly at the feet of the environmentalist movement and their puppet politicians around the world, particularly in the European Union.
By the way, for its part, the European Union, which normally can be counted on to wax eloquent in its morally and ethically superior manner about 'our responsibility to the poor of the world,' intends to dig in its heels and stay the course on developing and using biofuel technology, in spite of the food crisis it is creating.
To borrow a conversation from European royalty in the past, 'But, Sirs, the people have no bread.'

Couric May Be Gone In Two Weeks, Sources Say
The buzz around the news business and political circles is that CBS News lead anchor, Katie Couric, may be out of a job in as little as two weeks.
Rumors of a major shakeup at CBS News have been floating about for weeks. Couric has not helped the CBS Evening News pull itself up out of the ratings doldrums, and in fact, the ratings have only plunged further since she assumed the anchor's chair.
The big news that has made its way around the Beltway, however, is that CBS may be getting ready to outsource its news reporting to CNN.
This would be earth-shattering news to the network newscasts, which have been a mainstay of the big three networks since their inception. However, as times have changed and viewers are presented with a variety of choices from which to get their news, the network news broadcasts have suffered terribly, losing viewers by the millions every year.
As far back as a decade ago media watchers were predicting the demise of network news broadcasts as they gradually become dinosaurs from a bygone era.
Fox dominates cable news, and they are not the only choice. CNN, of course, is the grandfather of cable news services although they have lost much of their dominance to Fox.
And then there are the endless sources of news on the Internet.
Couric, it seems, came along at the wrong time. She isn't bad as an anchor, although she is definitely liberal in her bias. But she is not as bad as many, and much much better than her predecessor, Dan Rather, who never attempted to hide his bias or aim at objectivity.
Sources close to Couric's negotiations with CBS state that the anchor may stay through the 2008 Presidential election, but that if acceptable terms cannot be reached she could be gone in as little as two weeks.
If the latter holds sway, the question is will CBS News once again turn to its white male, gray-haired veterans, such as Bob Sheiffer, until it reaches an agreement with CNN on outsourcing the news.

They Sure Know How To Pick 'Em, Don't They?
The members of the American Left and the mainstream media pick the oddest individuals upon whom to bestow their highest accolades, don't they?
No sooner had Barack Obama announced his candidacy than the mainstream media and the liberal elite had proclaimed him Presidential material because he is, supposedly, 'smart,' 'charismatic,' and possessing of that all-important quality when picking a President, 'star appeal.'
As it turns out, Obama is actually nothing more than a dumb elitist who lacks basic common sense and intelligence.
Here is the perfect case in point. Obama had been campaigning in Pennsylvania seeking to overcome Hillary's overwhelming lead. And he had made some inroads, not by using honorable means but by lying to the citizens about gun rights.
This is the man who has supported a handgun ban all his political career. Yet he told audiences all across Pennsylvania that he is 'the pro-Second Amendment candidate.'
He also appealed to the citizens' sense of decency, honor, and values by highlighting the rich religious heritage of the people, particularly in the rural areas of the state.
However, no sooner had the candidate left Pennsylvania than he was out in San Francisco (where Obama's true opinions resonate with most of the population) trashing the very values to which he had appealed while in Pennsylvania.
Referring to the people of rural Pennsylvania as individuals whose ignorance leads them to 'cling to their guns and their religion,' Obama proceeded to make it clear that the people with whom he is most comfortable are the gun-grabbing, rights-robbing, military-hating, pinko Commie extremists of San Francisco.
Now, you tell me what intelligent politician in his right mind would do such a thing, even if he truly detested the views of a group of people whose votes he is trying to win?
Given his history in the Illinois legislature, it is a safe bet to assume that Obama truly does detest the values of rural Pennsylvania--the bastion of blue dog Democrats and Reagan conservatives (in both Parties). After all, they believe that gun rights are inherent in this nation and that religious faith is one of the defining pillars of this Republic.
This means, of course, that handgun bans are viewed as flagrant violations of the U.S. Constitution and that Obama's ultra-liberal denomination, the United Church of Christ, has consistently fought against the traditional ideals upon which this nation was founded.
Obama has apologized, of course, not for the ideas he propounded but only for his 'poor choice of words.'
In other words, 'I still believe you people in Pennsylvania are a bunch of backward, ignorant, hayseed, gun-totin,' and Bible thumpin' religious fanatics...but I apologize for describing my views with those particular words.'
Thinking people are not going to buy that. Let's see how much more intelligent the people of Pennsylvania turn out to be than the imbecile who insulted them.

He also appealed to the citizens' sense of decency, honor, and values by highlighting the rich religious heritage of the people, particularly in the rural areas of the state.
However, no sooner had the candidate left Pennsylvania than he was out in San Francisco (where Obama's true opinions resonate with most of the population) trashing the very values to which he had appealed while in Pennsylvania.
Referring to the people of rural Pennsylvania as individuals whose ignorance leads them to 'cling to their guns and their religion,' Obama proceeded to make it clear that the people with whom he is most comfortable are the gun-grabbing, rights-robbing, military-hating, pinko Commie extremists of San Francisco.
Now, you tell me what intelligent politician in his right mind would do such a thing, even if he truly detested the views of a group of people whose votes he is trying to win?
Given his history in the Illinois legislature, it is a safe bet to assume that Obama truly does detest the values of rural Pennsylvania--the bastion of blue dog Democrats and Reagan conservatives (in both Parties). After all, they believe that gun rights are inherent in this nation and that religious faith is one of the defining pillars of this Republic.
This means, of course, that handgun bans are viewed as flagrant violations of the U.S. Constitution and that Obama's ultra-liberal denomination, the United Church of Christ, has consistently fought against the traditional ideals upon which this nation was founded.
Obama has apologized, of course, not for the ideas he propounded but only for his 'poor choice of words.'
In other words, 'I still believe you people in Pennsylvania are a bunch of backward, ignorant, hayseed, gun-totin,' and Bible thumpin' religious fanatics...but I apologize for describing my views with those particular words.'
Thinking people are not going to buy that. Let's see how much more intelligent the people of Pennsylvania turn out to be than the imbecile who insulted them.

The Chinese Show Their True Colors
The world is truly fortunate that the Chinese are hosting the Olympics. Never since Tienanmen Square have the true colors of the Communist regime been on full display for all to see.
Despite all of the so-called 'progress' made in China with the introduction of capitalism into its system (albeit with clear anti-capitalistic restrictions on speech and other human rights), the nation is still held firmly in the grip of totalitarianism along with all of its concomitant suppression of human rights.
No greater example of this can be found than China's present treatment of Tibet, the Buddhist monks, and its reaction to the nations participating in the Olympics that protest the regime's oppressive actions.
The problem is that the West routinely capitulates to Chinese demands. Google and Microsoft betrayed their country when, on condition of doing business in China, they agreed to the regime's demands that freedom of expression be suppressed.
And the most that the West can seem to muster in response to China's barbaric treatment of Tibet is a verbal slap on the wrist.
As usual, this is not enough.

Is It a Recession When the Recovery Has Begun?
The mainstream media, liberal politicians, and some economists claim we are either in a recession or on the brink of one.
But can we really call it a recession when the recovery has begun at the very outset?
The housing market is usually the first segment in the economy to indicate trouble ahead. But even before that those who excavate and clear the land and prep it for building feel the first tremors in a coming economic downturn.
Conversely, these persons are also the ones who are the first to see the signs of recovery.
The buzz in the excavation and land prep business is that things are turning around, even as economists are still trying to make up their minds if we are in a recession or on the brink of one.
This is excellent news because it means that builders are gearing up to get moving again.
The turnaround won't take place over night. But the land movers would not be getting work unless homebuilders were getting ready to start building again...meaning, of course, that developers are seeing signs of an economic upswing in the housing industry.
Maybe we should begin to refer to this as the 'little recession that wasn't.'

McCain's Choice for Running Mate
If, indeed, it is true that John McCain will choose a running mate based upon no consideration other than who would make the best President should he (McCain) die in office, then his only choice will be Fred Thompson.
Thompson has maturity, gravitas, a clear grasp of who he is, including a realistic assessment of his own limitations, not to mention a wide variety of experience.
For these reasons Thompson is light-years ahead of all of the other possibilities, including Condi Rice, Joe Lieberman, Tom Ridge, Mark Sanford, and others.
Thus, if we accept the premise that McCain's choice will be based upon no other consideration than the one mentioned above, that means if he chooses someone of lesser stature than Thompson we can safely assume that McCain's reasoning is much more complicated and purely political than a mere concern about 'who would make the best President.'
We shall see...

Condi Removes Herself From Consideration
Stating that she intends to return to the west coast after President Bush's second term, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice removed herself from consideration today as a potential running mate for Senator John McCain in his bid for the White House.
Rice insists that she never lobbied for the job. However, several GOP officials close to the McCain campaign insist otherwise.
The news has been abuzz with reports concerning Rice's consultation with McCain campaign officials for a possible McCain-Rice ticket. While Rice has consistently denied participating in such meetings, the McCain camp has neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

National Poll Shows Obama Lead Growing
Scott Rasmussen, who does daily tracking polls for major news organizations is reporting today that Barack Obama has opened an 11-point lead over Hillary Clinton in a nationwide matchup among likely Democratic voters.
This is the largest lead to date that Obama has opened over Hillary Clinton.
As we have reported on The Liberty Sphere, Obama has significant liabilities in a head-to-head matchup with John McCain and may even be much easier to beat than Hillary.
In addition, McCain's approach to Obama may be much more effective than Hillary's confrontational jabs--a tactic that McCain would be much more reluctant to employ. Rumors have been swirling around Washington for weeks that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is a top contender for John McCain's running mate. Apparently that rumor has been confirmed as a fact.
ABC News is reporting that not only is Rice being promoted for the Vice-Presidential position in a potential McCain Administration but she is actively seeking the job.
I have deep reservations about Rice. Her views on the Middle East, in my estimation, are unproductive and terribly lopsided against Israel.
On the other hand, she is fiercely pro-gun. Rice's story of growing up in Birmingham, Alabama is a perfect example of how important the gun was to oppressed blacks in the struggle for Civil Rights, particularly in light of the fact that gun control was first introduced primarily by racist whites to keep guns out of the hands of blacks.
My hunch? McCain is keeping Rice as an option should Barack Obama become the Democratic nominee. Thus, she is definitely on the short list.

They Don't Make 'Em Like Heston Anymore
The great Charlton Heston has died after a long bout with Alzheimer's Disease.
Apart from his major accomplishments as an actor, Heston was one of the most ardent defenders of liberty, particularly the right to carry arms.
One of his most famous lines was not from one of his many memorable movies but from his days as the President of the National Rifle Association:
'You can take my rifle only when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.'
Thanks, Mr. Heston, for articulating what many of us feel. May we never lose faith. And may you rest in peace.

Buckley, Koppel, and St. Patrick's
An overflow crowd gathered Friday at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York to remember William F. Buckley, Jr. Members of Buckley's family, and Henry Kissinger, eulogized Buckley and read scripture in his memory.
The greatness of Bill Buckley has been spelled out many times on The Liberty Sphere, and he was certainly deserving of all of the accolades.
But the thing most of us will miss as much as his fierce defense and offense in the conservative movement is his sharp wit.
One of my favorites involves Ted Koppel and his long-running ABC News program entitled, 'Nightline.' When Buckley retired from his 33-year run on PBS's 'Firing Line,' he appeared on the Koppel program.
At the end of the show Koppel turned to Buckley and stated, 'We only have one minute left. Would you like to sum up your 33 years on Firing Line?'
To which Buckley replied, 'Um, no.'
He was truly one of a kind.

The Clinton Betrayers: 'Et Tu, Brute?'
Despite the fact that I am no fan of the Clintons, I will admit that they have been betrayed, unfortunately, by some longtime friends during this campaign.
Some of it is understandable. Politics is about winning, and many within the ranks of the Democrats simply feel that Hillary has shown herself to be unelectable. Prudence would therefore dictate that many would throw their support to Obama in spite of the fact that he may even be more of a liability than Hillary when it is all said and done.
However, many of the Clinton betrayers are longtime friends who have now proven themselves to be companions of the fair-weather variety. These would include Chris Dodd, Charles Rangel, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry, among others.
The most stinging and embarrassing defection in the Clintons' point of view, however, is that of New Mexico Governor and former Clinton Administration official Bill Richardson.
While on a campaign swing through California to lobby Democratic super-delegates, Bill Clinton exploded into rage when asked about James Carville's reference to Richardson as 'Judas.'
News reporters and observers alike report that the former President's face immediately turned blood red as he seethed with anger in his response to the question. 'He (Richardson) promised me at least 5 times he would not do that,' Clinton claimed.
Richardson's staff immediately issued a complete denial, that the Governor never promised the Clintons that he would not endorse Obama.
Bill Clinton's reaction, however, tells another story.
True, Clinton is known to lie. We have all seen it many times on prime time TV. But when Clinton lies there is lacking the spontaneity and split-second emotional outburst that is characteristic of the former President's demeanor when he is truly upset and when he truly believes what he is saying is the truth.

Perhaps the former President has every right to be hurt very deeply. Perhaps Richardson is the one who didn't have the guts to be upfront with the Clintons concerning his decision to go with Obama after he had affirmed his friendship with and support for Hillary Clinton.
Just as in Shakespeare's famous tragedy when Julius Caesar began to realize that even his best friend had participated in the fatal betrayal, and thus the words, 'Et tu, Brute?' (Even you, Brutus?), Bill and Hillary Clinton find themselves stunned that even Bill Richardson, of all people, would participate in the betrayal.
Two things are certain--Bill Clinton has lost his 'political sex appeal,' and Hillary is suddenly fighting for her very political survival.
Some of it is understandable. Politics is about winning, and many within the ranks of the Democrats simply feel that Hillary has shown herself to be unelectable. Prudence would therefore dictate that many would throw their support to Obama in spite of the fact that he may even be more of a liability than Hillary when it is all said and done.
However, many of the Clinton betrayers are longtime friends who have now proven themselves to be companions of the fair-weather variety. These would include Chris Dodd, Charles Rangel, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry, among others.

ABC News is reporting that the latest punch thrown in the war between Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is Hillary's contention that 'Barack Obama can't win.'
News reports from the campaign trail indicate that Bill and Hillary Clinton have been strongly lobbying the Democratic 'super-delegates' to encourage them to vote for Hillary.
Super-delegates are told by the Clintons that the main reason they should vote for Hillary is that Obama cannot win in the general election against John McCain.
Insiders say that when Bill and Hillary lobbied Governor Bill Richardson, who later endorsed Obama, Hillary pleaded, 'Barack Obama cannot win, Bill, he cannot win.'
In all likelihood Hillary is right, although it is not impossible for Barack to win. But the problem for Hillary is that in all likelihood she cannot win, either. Polls are showing McCain ahead of both Obama and Hillary in potential head-to-head matchups.

Message to Congress: Halt Gasoline Taxes NOW!
As they usually do every few years, members of Congress hauled in the oil company executives on Tuesday for a trip to the woodshed, blaming them for everything from global warming to high gas prices to *gasp* actually making a good profit for shareholders.
I will not waste my time and energy on the imbecilic charges and inexplicable holier-than-thou display staged by Congressional Democrats.
Instead, let's get down to the nitty gritty, shall we?
Congress needs to place a moratorium on gasoline taxes at the pump. In addition, state and local governments need to follow suit. This will save the average American at least $24 bucks at the pump every time we fill up.
Government already makes windfall profits off of oil companies, raking in at least 7 times the profit margin of the oil companies on a gallon of gas.
In hard times one would think that the Party that likes to proclaim itself the 'friend of the little guy' and the 'Party that cares about the working people' would wish to repeal all taxes on gasoline, given the massive amount of money it would save average Americans.
The repeal would only need to be temporary until we can get ourselves back into some stability in the oil markets, which are totally out of the control of the oil companies themselves.
Democrats in Congress claim that the profits of the oil companies are 'obscene.' And what, pray tell, would we call the taxes the government collects from gasoline?
You see, Liberals believe that it is immoral for a business to make a profit for its owners/shareholders. But when government rakes in multi-billions of dollars in taxes from those 'obscene profits,' everything is perfectly fine.
This double-standard, frankly, is nauseating.
Thus, let the Demos in Congress put their money where their lying mouths are. If they are serious about helping 'the little guy' who needs a break from prices at the pump, then place a moratorium on all gasoline taxes.
This would mean that a normal fill-up that would cost you $60 bucks would then cost you only $36 bucks.
Do I believe this will happen? Only when pigs fly. Money-grubbing, sticky-fingered politicians of the Liberal type are more greedy than ANY oil company executive.

Individual Rights Take a Beating in South Carolina
The South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that the city of Greenville, SC is within the law in enacting a smoking ban. The Greenville ordinance had been challenged by a group of business owners in the city.
At least a dozen other towns and cities in South Carolina were awaiting word from the state Supreme Court before enacting proposed smoking bans.
It appears that what was once a bastion of individual rights has become a mecca for the meddling nanny-state gestapo. Rather than rule that the decision to smoke is an individual one that is no one else's business, not to mention that business owners should be allowed to decide on their own whether or not to allow smoking on their own private property, the Supreme Court in the state threw its weight behind the purveyors of the Big Brother Nanny State who seem to believe they have the right to tell other people what to do.
Government in the United States was not established to save people from themselves nor to force people to do things 'for their own good.'
Apparently neither the citizens nor the Supreme Court in South Carolina are even vaguely aware of this concept.
I would have expected such a ruling in California or Massachusetts, but not South Carolina.
Thus, the march to beat individual rights into the ground continues....

When the Lights Went Out...
So, did you turn off all your lights between the hours of 8 and 9 PM last evening for the sake of the environment?
I didn't.
In protest, I turned all of mine on.
I did this for two primary reasons. One, I am not one of the sheeple who do as I am told simply because Socialists, environmentalist snobs, or government elitists say so. I am an adult, thank-you, and I can make my own decisions based upon what I read and study. Two, instead of forcing people either by law or by shame and guilt to give up something, why not put all of our brain cells to work developing new and sustainable energy sources?
You see, I believe that intelligent people secure sensible solutions to problems based upon human ingenuity and creativity. Imbeciles believe that the only way to solve a problem is to limit human choice and freedom.
Thus, my lights stayed on and they will continue to stay on each year the Commie-sympathizers stage this imbecilic 'lights off' showcase.
