Stating that she intends to return to the west coast after President Bush's second term, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice removed herself from consideration today as a potential running mate for Senator John McCain in his bid for the White House.
Rice insists that she never lobbied for the job. However, several GOP officials close to the McCain campaign insist otherwise.
The news has been abuzz with reports concerning Rice's consultation with McCain campaign officials for a possible McCain-Rice ticket. While Rice has consistently denied participating in such meetings, the McCain camp has neither confirmed nor denied the reports.
A few anonymous sources had even suggested that Rice was already on McCain's short list of possible running mates.
She may still be on that list despite today's announcement. In the event of a Democratic ticket headed by Barack Obama, one can safely assume that Rice could be convinced by a persistent John McCain in the event that only Rice's presence on the GOP ticket could stop an aggressive Obama bandwagon.

That is not what the news said today. Condi told the reporter she is going back to Cali, but when the reporter pressed her to give a "Shermanesque denial," meaning "If drafted, I will not run; if nominated, I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve."
She did not say she would not serve if drafted. Another point of contention I have is suggesting that Senator McCain would choose Condi because she is black. The running mate a candidate chooses tells more about that candidate's character than anything else in the campaign. McCain has stated time and again that he will choose a candidate that he believes can fill the position as President in the case of his death. He will not choose a running mate to gain more votes no matter what state that person is from, what race that person is, or what gender.
Obviously you have much more faith in McCain than I do...
she's still in... she just wants to keep a low profile...
