What are the factors that are contributing to this precipitous plunge?

The analysis also highlights a 'teachable moment' for Obama in the handling of such matters in the future.
To be completely frank, one has the wonder about the stability and insight of a U.S. President wading into a local police matter, particularly before he has any knowledge of the facts.
Americans who consider themselves conservatives now outnumber Americans who consider themselves liberal by almost two to one, according to a new poll by the Washington Post and ABC News.
In the poll of 1,001 adults conducted between July 15-18, respondents were asked: “Would you say your views on most political matters are liberal, moderate, or conservative?”
Thirty-eight percent said they were conservative, while only 20% said they were liberal. Thirty-nine percent, meanwhile, said they were moderate.
The percentage of self-described conservatives has increased since President Barack Obama was inaugurated in January and the percentage of self-described liberals has diminished.

Other than the rebounding stock market, banks are still failing in near-record numbers. Just yesterday, 6 banks were shut down by the Feds in the state of Georgia alone.
In addition, the economy continues to lose jobs to the tune of 400,000-500,000 per month, the housing industry is still in the toilet, and Obama's fascist experiment with 'Government Motors' is failing badly.
GM lost over 20% of its sales last month, while Ford, and only major U.S. carmaker not to take stimulus money, showed its first profit in over a year.
And don't get too comfortable yet, my friends. There is another trainwreck on the way as commercial mortgages begin to fail in the coming months.
Conservative 'blue dog' Democrats were outraged and stormed out of a special meeting with Waxman, stating that he had 'lied to them' that they were merely trying to 'save their Party.'
As if this were not enough, White House henchman Rahm Emanuel told reporters yesterday afternoon that in spite of announcing to the public that there would be no vote on the healthcare legislation until the Fall, the House Democratic leadership is, indeed, planning a vote next week--BEFORE the recess.
The House of Representatives does plan to vote on health legislation before leaving for its August recess, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told NPR.
Emerging from several hours of meetings Thursday with House leaders, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Emanuel told NPR's Steve Inskeep that "their intention is to go next week and she is working toward that goal."
So much for open, honest, ethical, and transparent government...

This report was filed by The Hill.
The Blue Dogs contend that the House Democratic leadership, Waxman in particular, ceased to negotiate with them 'in good faith,' and that they (the conservatives) were merely trying to 'save their Party.'
“I’ve been lied to,” Blue Dog Coalition Co-Chairman Charlie Melancon (D-La.) said on Friday. “We have not had legitimate negotiations.
“Mr. Waxman has decided to sever discussions with the Blue Dogs who are trying to make this bill work for America,” Melancon said.
Although those Blue Dogs were supposed to be headed back into another meeting of the Energy and Commerce Democrats, their anger was visible.
Obviously, the Democrats are in complete disarray over this monstrous plan that has sharply divided their own Party.

Read all about it at Columbia Conservative Examiner!
The clincher--the Obama healthcare plan is actually a weeding out process for the nation's sick and elderly! Don't be fooled!
Studies already show the legislation's eroding popularity, as citizens find out the problems inherent in socialized medicine, the tax increases necessary to finance it, and the deception politicians use to inflate the number of uninsured Americans.
(From the article 'Lies, Damn Lies, and Healthcare' in Front Page Magazine).
Make no mistake about it, the Obama Administration and Democrats on the Hill are lying about the numbers of uninsured Americans in order to falsely justify dismantling our present healthcare system in lieu of a government-controlled form of socialized medicine.
The costs to the taxpayers are astronomical, the problems with the plan are insurmountable, and the deception used to market the program is inexcusable.
Be warned, however. The details in this report are shocking, gruesome, and not for young eyes.

Sounds like a good question to me.
The latest is the example provided by Obama economic adviser Larry Summers, supposedly 'proving' that the economy is well on the mend.
Summers' proof? 'Fewer people are searching the term "economic depression" on Google.'
Uh, you wanna run that by me again, Einstein?
Do you think, in your almighty wisdom, that there may be the slightest possibility that the reason people aren't looking for that term as much is that they are already convinced that the economy is in the tank and will get worse before it gets better?
Nahhhh, I didn't think so...
