Ron Paul on Gun Owners of America

Washington, DC (TLS). Today's quote of the day comes from U.S. House Representative Ron Paul, R-TX. Mr. Paul is a candidate for the Republican nomination for President.

Here is what the candidate says about Gun Owners of America:
'The only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington.'

This is a very important quote, for there are plenty of gun lobby groups in Washington and around the country. However, some are no more than gun control groups attempting to splinter gun owners into factions so that our power as a voting block will be diminished.

Others are sincere in their belief in the Second Amendment but will compromise on some vitally important issues that have the effect of weakening our rights.

As Ron Paul states, Gun Owners of America will not compromise on a Constitutional right. The right to own and carry guns is either a protected right guaranteed by the Constitution or it isn't. There is actually very little middle ground.

Republican Candidates Court Gun Rights Vote

Washington, DC (TLS). Amazing things happen when politicians begin running for President. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani stated this week that he believes in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution--that individual citizens have the right to keep and bear arms.

This is in spite of the fact that Giuliani supported some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the history of NYC.

But now Giuliani is running for President. A Republican Presidential candidate is going nowhere in a hurry these days without the support of citizens at the grassroots level who hold dear their right to keep and bear arms.

Just as it is to be expected that Democratic candidates on the national level will call for more gun control, Republicans on the other hand are expected by their core constituencies to clearly and strongly articulate their unfettered support for the 2nd Amendment.

The 2nd Amendment is every bit as important as the First Amendment, which guarantees the right to free speech, free assembly, free religious expression, and a free press. These rights delineated in the First Amendment were won only by the free exercise of the 2nd Amendment.

Thus, it is the Second Amendment that ultimately guarantees that the rights delineated in the First Amendment are kept intact. Without an armed citizenry to keep the creeping crawl of government power in check, tyranny is just around the corner. And with tyranny you can kiss free speech, free press, free assembly, and freedom of religion good-bye.

In Giuliani's case, does he really and truly believe in these things, or is he merely saying them to appease that part of the Republican voting base that he needs to win the primaries?

No one know for sure except Giuliani in his heart of hearts. But I had rather hear him state his support for the 2nd Amendment, and then hold his feet to the fire, rather than risk a Democrat getting elected, all of whom are clearly anti-Second Amendment.

Next we have John McCain. McCain has an F- grade on gun rights from Gun Owners of America, showing that when it comes to crucial votes, he has consistently voted to limit the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. Yet Tuesday, in the wake of the Virginia Tech Massacre, McCain stated unequivocally that he supports gun rights and believes that exercising that right responsibly could have prevented the attack on Monday.

This is the strongest statement yet by any of the three front-runners on the Republican side concerning Second Amendment rights.

It took guts for McCain to say these things in the wake of the worst single-gunman mass murder in the history of the U.S. But he is 100% correct.

Mitt Romney also reiterated his support for gun rights, although he has flip-flopped several times on the issue, leaving voters scratching their heads trying to figure out where, exactly, he stands on anything.

While the statements this week by Rudy Giuliani and John McCain in particular are encouraging, The Liberty Sphere still feels that the vast majority of Republicans are not enthusiastic about the front runners. Someone from the so-called 'second tier' will more than likely emerge from the back of the pack and captivate the hopes, dreams, and aspirations not only of the Republican core, but the electorate in general.

Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, Sam Brownback, and Mike Huckabee are all very shrewd and able candidates. They are also each in favor of gun rights for the citizens.

And with the front runners now on the record in support of gun rights for individual citizens, at least we have a full field of candidates we can hold to accountability. No matter who is the nominee, we can now hold their feet to the fire and demand that they stick by their words during the campaign if they get elected.

If they don't, we can sure turn against them in a hurry.

Newt's Got a Big Problem

Washington, DC (TLS). Newt Gingrich has emerged as one of the potential 'dark horse' candidates who could rise to the top of the pack at the last minute in the race toward the Republican Presidential nomination.

However, Newt's got a big problem.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) has published a complete informational rundown on the candidates in both Parties and how they stack up with regard to 2nd Amendment rights. According to Gun Owners of America, Newt often thwarted attempts to get gun rights bills placed on the docket when he was Speaker of the House, leading to less than admirable ratings by the GOA.

At one point, GOA states that Gingrich garnered no better than a grade of 'D' on gun rights.

What this means is that Gingrich is only one grade ahead of the dismal ratings of 'F' and 'F-' that GOA has given to candidates Giuliani and McCain. The GOA states that Romney has been all over the board so much on various issues, including gun rights, that it is difficult to tell what, exactly, the candidate truly believes about the 2nd Amendment.

By far the best candidates on gun rights are Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul, with Tom Tancredo moving up fast.

While Newt's stance on other issues of great interest to conservatives may, in the long run, overcome any weakness on gun issues, at this point it appears that he has a long way to go in convincing gun rights groups that he is our man.

On the other hand, none of the Democrats have anything that could be construed as an acceptable record on the 2nd Amendment, with the possible exception of Governor Bill Richardson. While the GOA has yet to rate Richardson on their grading scale, the rest of the pack among the Democrats rate an 'F' or worse...'F-' being the absolute worst (candidates Clinton, Obama, Biden, Dodd, and even Gore rate an 'F-').

Thus, a Gingrich candidacy would be much preferred over the likes of anything the Democrats have put forth.

Pro-Liberty Group Designated as 'Hate Group'

Charlotte, NC (TLS). The Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama outfit that has taken up every extremist, ultra-Leftwing cause imaginable, has designated a highly respected, long-standing conservative group as a 'hate group.'

In the April issue of its monthly publication, the Southern Poverty Law Center plans to name 'Young Americans for Freedom' at Michigan State University as a 'hate group' along with subversive groups such as the Klu Klux Klan, Aryan Nation, and the Nazis.

Young Americans for Freedom was founded in 1960 by venerable conservative intellectual William F. Buckley. The late actor John Wayne had been a member.

During the early 1970s as I was making one of my first forays into politics, I became a member of Young Americans for Freedom, primarily due to the fact that in those days the organization was raising funds for and promoting the candidacy of Ronald Reagan for the U.S. Presidency.

I had become profoundly disillusioned with both Democrats and Republicans during those years. It seemed that Democrats were slowly but surely embracing radical extremism represented by the likes of Hanoi Jane Fonda, George McGovern, John Kerry, and dozens of others. Republicans had been moving leftward after the Watergate scandal under 'moderates' such as Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, and Henry Kissinger, who had decided the best we could do with Communism was declare a standoff--which back then was referred to as 'detente.'

'Detente' was the brain-child of appeasement-oriented advisers such as Kissinger, who believed that if the Soviet Union and the United States would simply agree that since we both had enough nukes to end the world, we should simply agree not to use them. The world could attain peace through the recognition that if either power launched a missile, the other would respond in kind, resulting in complete global annihilation.

The problem was that 'detente' did not result in peace.

The Soviet Union continued its march toward world domination through intimidation, such as the shooting down of civilian airliners and other such acts of barbarism--and, invading Afghanistan.

Reagan believed there was a better way.

And he was right. Reagan believed the only way to achieve a peaceful solution to the menace of Soviet Communism was to build up America's military and munitions arsenals so thoroughly that an economically unstable Soviet Union would crumble attempting to keep up.

Ever since Reagan delivered a keynote address on national TV in 1964 endorsing Presidential contender Barry Goldwater, I knew that this was a man who not only had the message but the communication skills to take that message to the American public in a highly effective manner.

Reagan believed in peace through strength; that America should accept nothing less than being the absolute best at everything we did, and that included becoming the world's ONLY superpower; that the average citizens were ultimately good and trustworthy and did not need 'big brother' watching over every move they made; that big government is bad and small government is good, as Jefferson maintained; and thus, that lower taxes were the only road to true economic prosperity, that when government is cut back to live within its means, the people are left with more of their own money to spend as they see fit.

For these reasons Young Americans for Freedom jumped on the Reagan bandwagon. And this was the primary reason for my involvement.

There was never any hate or animosity expressed toward anyone of any color, creed, or gender, or nationality. In fact, the Reagan revolution consisted of people from every walk of life--Caucasian, Black, American Indian, Hispanic, poor, middle class, upper class, blue collar workers and white collar workers.

One of Reagan's largest sources of support came from 'rust belt' blue collar workers who feared their jobs were endangered due to a small but growing phenomenon called 'overseas outsourcing.' These were known as 'Reagan Democrats' as they had traditionally voted for Democrat candidates but were solidly in Reagan's corner.

We didn't care about race, gender, religion, or nationality when it came to supporting Reagan. All we cared about was patriotism, optimism and hope, the belief that America's best days were ahead and not behind us, and a stubborn unwillingness to accept the intellectual elite's prognosis that America was in decline and that we had best accept our fate as a former world power.

This was what Young Americans for Freedom was all about.

Yet here comes that consortium of Leftist ideologues of the Southern Poverty Law Center who have now decided that Young Americans for Freedom is a 'hate group.'

Their reason? The Michigan State University chapter of Young Americans for Freedom stands for enforcing the nation's laws on illegal aliens, the definition of marriage as being that between a man and a woman, and the belief that affirmative action is a racist/sexist program that makes decisions based solely on race and gender when the goal is for persons to be selected for their intellect and skill no matter what their race or gender.

For this the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated Young Americans for Freedom as a 'hate group.'

My friends, this should be an outrage to any sincere, patriotic American. The definition of what constitutes a 'hate group' according to the Southern Poverty Law Center includes the vast majority of American citizens! Most credible national surveys show the vast majority of Americans believe that the flow of illegal aliens into this country should stop, that marriage is a sacred commitment between a man and a woman, and that you don't correct past racism/sexism by perpetrating MORE racism/sexism through affirmative action.

If we let the Southern Poverty Law Center get away with this, you can rest assured they will not stop there. They will proceed to designate other groups as 'hate groups.'

Here are some examples:

If you attend a Baptist church, and your preacher reads from the Bible that marriage is between a man and a woman only, you can count on Southern Poverty Law Center to designate your church as a 'hate group.'

If you are a member of any gun rights group, such as the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and other 2nd Amendment advocacy groups, then you can expect that the Southern Poverty Law Center will more than likely designate your group as a 'hate group.'

Remember, we've already had a Leftwing, gun-hating columnist in the Roanoke Times compare gun owners to child molesters!

Thus, if you believe that it is OK for a citizen to own a handgun and use a handgun in self-defense, then you will be labeled by these purveyors of hate in the name of stamping out hate.

Remember, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, whom the Southern Poverty Law Center affirms as a shining example of what a politician should be, given that he agrees with all of their views, has proposed legislation that would make your preacher guilty of uttering 'hate speech' if he publicly reads from the Bible in church that homosexuality is a sin.

I am thinking about putting together my own list to include such extremist mobs as the Southern Poverty Law Center. I will call it, 'The Anti-Freedom Black List of Subversives.'

And you can bet your last bowl of grits that heading that list will be the Southern Poverty Law Center.

COURT SCORES MAJOR VICTORY FOR GUN RIGHTS

Washington, DC (TLS). The Second Amendment was clarified and upheld when a D.C. Circuit Court panel ruled that the District of Columbia's gun control laws violate the U.S. Constitution.

The panel held that the Second Amendment protects the INDIVIDUAL'S right to keep and bear arms and that this right is not excluded to service in the militia. The Judges cited historic legal precedent in stating that gun rights were viewed by the Founders as serving a multi-purpose function, only one of which is being ready to serve in a militia when called. The right to keep and bear arms, according to the Founders, served as a mechanism for self-defense and as a means to fight the rule of a tyrannical government, should that need arise.

Here is an excerpt from the 75-page ruling:

'To summarize, we conclude that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. That right existed prior to the formation of the new government under the Constitution and was premised on the private use of arms for activities such as hunting and self-defense, the latter being understood as resistance to either private lawlessness or the depredations of a tyrannical government (or a threat from abroad). In addition, the right to keep and bear arms had the important and salutary civic purpose of helping to preserve the citizen militia. The civic purpose was also a political expedient for the Federalists in the First Congress as it served, in part, to placate their Antifederalist opponents. The individual right facilitated militia service by ensuring that citizens would not be barred from keeping the arms they would need when called forth for militia duty. Despite the importance of the Second Amendment's civic purpose, however, the activities it protects are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued or intermittent enrollment in the militia. As we have seen in many other constitutional cases, including decisions by the Ohio Supreme Court, the judges found that DC's gun laws amount to a complete prohibition on the lawful use of handguns for self-defense: The majority opinion also rejects the argument that the Second Amendment does not apply to the District of Columbia because it is not a State. And the majority opinion concludes, "Section 7-2507.02, like the bar on carrying a pistol within the home, amounts to a complete prohibition on the lawful use of handguns for self-defense. As such, we hold it unconstitutional."'

My friends, this is a monumental victory for the rights of individual citizens.

LIBERTY ALERT! Illinois to Ban Rifles, Shotguns

Washington, DC (TLS). This is an urgent Liberty Alert. The State of Illinois is considering legislation that would ban hundreds of types of rifles and shotguns. This bill has come one step closer to becoming law as the state legislature is set to vote on the measure as early as this week.

Observers say that the bill will create a furious fight on the floor of the Illinois legislature.

Under the guise of an 'assault weapons ban,' proponents of the measure have included hundreds of styles and models of shotguns and rifles in the ban, the majority of which are owned and used by law-abiding citizens. Gun rights groups in Illinois are crying fowl and have pledged to fight the measure with every single resource in their power to keep the bill from becoming law.

One Second Amendment advocate stated, 'This may well be our last chance to keep our guns.'

Rudy's Problem With Gun Rights

Washington, DC (TLS). Rudy Giuliani shot himself in the foot yesterday with a comment he made about gun control. He may well have lost the tentative support of gun rights groups in the process.

Giuliani, in attempting to explain his support for gun control while Mayor of New York City, stated that it was new gun control laws that reduced the crime rate in the city. The former Mayor and his handlers had previously made overtures to conservative groups by stating that New York City was a special circumstance when Giuliani became Mayor and that strict gun control legislation was needed to bring violence under control.

Within this spin is the slight hint that Giuliani was saying that in principle he does not support restricting the right of the people to bear arms, as guaranteed in the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Gun rights advocates had one brief moment of hope that the candidate was getting ready to state that his support for 2nd Amendment rights is one of his core values and that the New York City situation was an emergency scenario that required emergency measures to correct.

Most of us lost that hope when Giuliani made his remarks about gun control yesterday.

The key issue is not the fact that Giuliani has backed away from his initial hint that they may be making a move to the right on gun rights. This is bad enough in and of itself. Rather, the key issue is that Giuliani has obviously bought into the gun control lobby propaganda that strict gun control measures reduce crime and violence in our cities. This notion is simply not true. The statistical data from both the CDC and the National Institute of Science shows NO correlation between strict gun control laws and a reduction in gun violence.

The fact that Giuliani would cite an erroneous theory based upon Leftist propaganda is highly problematic for one who would be President. The lapse points to a penchant for failing to think rationally and to base one's opinions on solid, observable data rather than conjecture or theory that arises out of one's political bias. We already have this very same problem with candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Hussein Obama, and John McCain. We certainly don't need yet another candidate who exhibits a failure to consider cold, hard scientific facts rather than push an unproven hypothesis.

In short, Rudy gained no friends among conservative groups with his remarks on gun control in New York City. It was a big mistake to even bring it up. Most Americans in the heartland, the South, and the Mountain States of the West already have suspicions about Rudy Giuliani. His comments on gun control yesterday took those suspicions to an ominous level--a level of distaste--which is a terribly bad sign for a candidate right out of the starting gate.
