GOA ISSUES ALERT ON HOLDER NOMINATION

Senate hearings on the Obama nomination of Eric Holder as Attorney-General of the United States will commence on Thursday. Gun Owners of America has issued a special alert to its members urging them to contact their Senators to oppose confirmation of Holder.

As most of you probably know by now, Eric Holder is one of the most active opponents to the 2nd Amendment among attorneys in America today.

The gun rights community has been embroiled in controversy of late over the tactics of the NRA with regard to Holder. Many believe that they have not done nearly enough to oppose the nomination. Others believe that the organization is realistic in its approach, knowing that a liberal Democrat President with a liberal Democrat Congress WILL get a liberal, anti-gun AG, regardless of any opposition among the citizens.

In all likelihood, both perspectives are probably right to varying degrees.

Yet it is difficult not to openly oppose a nominee whose history suggests that his opposition to gun rights is every bit as vociferous as Janet Reno's, if not worse.

Regardless of what gun rights organizations do or don't do, the issue is one of personal action. We can each individually contact our Senators expressing our outrage over Holder.

Gun Rights Examiner has more on this issue.

GOA Issues New Warning on Fairness Doctrine

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America (GOA) has issued a new warning about the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' and the damage it could do to the gun rights movement.

The GOA's success has been due in a large part to its access to talk radio, which has a sizable conservative audience. Democrats in Congress wish to silence conservative voices in the media by bringing back the old 'Fairness Doctrine,' which would allow liberals to demand 'equal time.'

Republicans in the House of Representatives were able to pass an amendment to an appropriations bill that prohibits the use of federal funds to implement the Fairness Doctrine.

This, however, is only a temporary measure.

When Senate Republicans attempted to add a similar amendment to a bill this week, that amendment was blocked by Senate Democrats. This means that should Democrats win the White House in 2008, and pick up a few more seats in Congress, you can kiss good-bye Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and even Paul Harvey for that matter.

Radio stations will be frightened into dropping these programs from the air for the fear that they would be forced to give Democrats and other leftists, even Communists, 'equal time.'

Funny how the government-run PBS radio and TV network has a liberal slant. Wonder if the Fairness Doctrine will be applied there? What about Chris Matthews on MSNBC? George Stephanopolis on NBC? Bob Sheiffer on CBS?

Believe me, if Democrats succeed in this attempt to thwart free speech, and in turn do damage to our 2nd Amendment rights by limiting access to talk radio, we will launch a massive public campaign to demand equal time for each and every statement Couric, Rather, Matthews, Blitzer, Sheiffer, and all the rest mouth off in favor of liberal public policies.

And then, if we are denied equal time, we will sue the pants off of them!

My friends, this will be war if the Democrats think they can get away with this ruse to silence free speech.

LIBERTY ALERT! Senate to Move on McCarthy Gun Bill

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America has issued an alert stating that the U.S. Senate will open hearings on the McCarthy gun bill, H.R. 2640, as soon as this week.

Congress has effectively kept citizens in the dark concerning the status of this bill. The New York Times, however, let the cat out of the bag by writing that Senate hearings on the bill would begin soon.

Debate will start in the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Democrat Patrick Leahy.

It's time to begin contacting Senators on that committee. They are Republicans Sam Brownback, Lindsey Graham, Orin Hatch, Jeff Sessions, Tom Coburn, Arlen Specter, Charles Grassley, Jon Kyl, and John Cornyn.

It would probably be useless to contact any of the Democrats on the committee since they are all in favor of the McCarthy anti-gun legislation.

The GOA states that the most advantageous thing to do would be to contact Senator Sam Brownback, an Republican candidate for President and a member of the committee. Brownback has stated his firm support of full Second Amendment rights.

GOA ALERT--McCarthy Gun-Grab Moves to Senate

Washington, DC (TLS). The U.S. House of Representatives rammed through the McCarthy-Dingell-NRA gun control bill without even as much as a recorded vote. Republicans were caught off-guard, having not been notified of the impending vote.

Thus, the bill moves to the Senate, where gun-grabbers such as Ted Kennedy, 'Little Chucky' Schumer, John McCain, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Harry Reid will do everything in their power to pass the measure. If successful, President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law.

Apparently the gun-grabbers successfully used the Cho Seung-Hui massacre at Virginia Tech to seize the PR and make a case for more gun control. Our side failed to short-circuit that process by aggressively showing the public that this mass-murder happened in a GUN-FREE ZONE.

In attempting to go after insane persons, preventing them from obtaining firearms, the powers that be in Washington would like to kill all the babies in order to prevent one sick baby from spreading germs. The bill as it stands also includes U.S. Veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Additionally, if you have ever been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ADD, or any number of other treatable emotional disorders, you will be prevented from purchasing a firearm. If you have ever had domestic difficulty involving the police, you will be prevented from purchasing a firearm. If you have ever used corporal punishment to discipline your children, you will be prevented from purchasing a firearm.

But that's not all. Your name will entered into a national database, indicating that you are NUTS, mentally defective, 'mentally ill,' and therefore unfit to own a gun.

So you see, in order to prevent a few truly insane persons from buying guns, our illustrious elected representatives in Washington are lumping LOTS of people into that category, for no other good reason than to take guns away from them!

And THAT is why this bill is NOT about Cho Seung-Hui and the Virginia Tech massacre! This is about gun control, pure and simple. And as I said last week, go ahead and drop 'em, bend over, and grab 'em, for we are about to be screwed in the you-know-what by Congress, the NRA, and President Bush.

GOA Issues Alert on Immigration Bill

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America has issued a special alert concerning the new immigration bill backed by the White House, Ted Kennedy, and John McCain. This bill contains provisions that could shut down every gun shop in America.

In crafting this ill-conceived bill, gun-grabbers Ted Kennedy and John McCain could not resist including provisions that would target gun stores. If a gun shop with as few as 5 employees commits at least two violations of federal gun laws, including paperwork violations, that store could be designated as a 'criminal gang' and shut down.

In addition, if an anti-gun zealot in the government determines that the 'main purpose' of that gun shop is to commit gun violations, then it can be shut down.

My friends, ambiguous wording such as this, aimed at gun stores, is simply one more way the anti-gun bigots in Washington have determined to rob the citizens of their Constitutional rights.

GOA Issues Urgent Alert on H.R. 297

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America (GOA), the only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington, has issued an urgent alert concerning the progress of the Dingell-McCarthy Bill (H.R. 297).

GOA says now is the time to contact your Washington representatives to get this bill defeated.

Carolyn McCarthy, the co-sponsor, never saw a gun-grab measure she did not like. And this time, she has managed to bring aboard some unexpected allies, such as a few Republicans and the NRA, which has stated it supports passage of the measure.

However, the bill will prevent millions of law-abiding citizens from purchasing firearms and will add yet one more plank of government control over an individual right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Gun Grabbers on the March--H.R.297

Washington, DC (TLS). No matter what the Democrats in Washington say publicly about there being no serious challenge to gun rights in the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, it is clear that the gun-grabbers are on the march with a vengeance.

H.R. 297 has been introduced in the House--the Dingell-McCarthy bill, which if enacted will take the Brady Bill to new heights in rolling back 2nd Amendment rights.

This bill is so serious and damaging that Gun Owners of America issued a special 'GOA Alert' to notify its members of an all-out effort to get this measure defeated. GOA states that this piece of legislation, under the guise of closing the so-called 'background check loophole,' will prevent millions of honest, law-abiding Americans from buying firearms.

For example, if you are a military Veteran who has suffered at any point in the past from post-traumatic stress disorder, you will be prevented from owning a gun under the provisions of this bill.

Your country called on you to bear a gun in the defense of this nation, yet your country is getting ready to claim you are unfit to bear a gun as a civilian, if this measure is passed.

YET THE NRA IS SUPPORTING IT!

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-New York, has failed in getting broad support for her relentless attempts at banning weapons thus far. She attempted to get us to lower our alert level by stating publicly this week that 'this Congress is pro-gun. There will be no anti-gun legislation from this Congress.'

McCarthy lied.

No sooner had she made that statement than she had introduced H.R. 297 along with Rep. Dingell. The two apparently have now gained some allies and support from some strange bedfellows, including some top Republicans and the NRA!

This bill is a farce and should be defeated. It is nothing more than one more veiled attempt at preventing millions of ordinary citizens from gaining access to guns.

GUN OWNERS OF AMERICA ISSUES ALERT!

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America (GOA) has issued a special alert in the wake of the massacre at Virginia Tech. It seems the forces of anti-freedom have wasted no time in using this tragic situation to push their agenda of robbing the citizens of their rights.

Virginia Tech is a gun-free zone in the Commonwealth of Virginia, meaning that students, employees, and faculty are defenseless against lawless violent perpetrators, such as Cho Seung Hui. Had there been someone in that classroom building carrying a concealed handgun, dozens of lives could have been saved from the blood-bath.

But this point goes right over the heads of the gun-grabbers.

The Dobson Snub of Fred Thompson

Washington, DC (TLS). Evangelical Christian leader James Dobson recently stated that while Fred Thompson is definitely conservative and espouses views that Dobson's listeners support, there are concerns about 'whether or not he is a Christian.'

Former U.S. Senator and actor Fred Thompson has suggested in recent days that he would consider entering the race for the Republican Presidential nomination.

Thompson's announcement has enlivened disheartened conservatives who have lamented the lack of viable conservative candidates in the Republican field. In the two weeks or so since Thompson indicated he may run, there has been a 'draft Fred Thompson' movement afoot among Republicans, including some with far-reaching influence and deep pockets.

Dobson, however, expressed hesitation over the possibility.

No doubt Dobson's listeners value a Christian candidate. As the most widely influential evangelical Christian on the scene today, Dobson's radio program, 'Focus on the Family,' is carried by over 2000 radio stations and boasts an audience of over 40 million listeners, most of whom are very politically active and support candidates who espouse traditional values.

Dobson's presumption that Thompson is not a Christian seems a bit over the top, however.

A Thompson spokesman responded to Dobson's remarks by stating that Thompson is, indeed, a Christian, having been baptized into the Church of Christ. A Dobson spokesman clarified the evangelical leader's remarks by stating that Dobson was not suggesting that the group to which Thompson belonged was not Christian but that Thompson had never spoken openly about his faith.

Evangelical Christians believe it is vital that followers of Christ give verbal assent to their faith. However, historically this has never been viewed as a license to pass judgment on a person's faith or lack thereof. Those matters are usually left up to the individual and God.

It is no secret that Dobson prefers Newt Gingrich, who recently confessed to Dobson's audience that he had an adulterous affair while serving as Speaker of the House. However, Newt has some negative baggage. Gun Owners of America is rather cool toward a Gingrich candidacy due to the difficulty of getting the Speaker to place on the docket bills of vital interest to gun owners. In addition, outside of conservative Republican circles, Newt's negatives tend to be rather high.

This is not to say that Newt would be snubbed by Republicans if he threw his hat into the ring or that he would not make inroads into the general population. He is certainly intelligent and articulate enough to bring people on board with him.

Yet so far no conservative candidate has created the excitement and the 'buzz' that Thompson has managed to create by merely suggesting that he 'might' run. Columnist Mona Charen wrote today that there are numerous reasons that a Thompson candidacy may be the only viable hope for a Republican win in 2008, not the least of which is his appeal to independents.

The bottom line is that Dobson's analysis of Fred Thompson's faith may not be a very important factor, not even to Dobson's listeners. Evangelical Christian voters today are intelligent, informed, and well-read. Their level of sophistication is such that an opinion expressed by a beloved evangelical leader will be viewed as nothing more than just that--an opinion.

Conservative voters are well-aware of the nature of politics. They are not looking for sainthood but for someone who shares their values, their ideals, their world-view. Above all they want someone who respects their faith.

Absolutely nothing in Fred Thompson's history or political career even remotely suggests that his views will not resonate with the vast majority of conservative evangelical voters.

SWEEPING ANTI-GUN BILL SUBMITTED (Correction)

**This is the corrected version of an earlier post which contained a factual error.**

Washington, DC (TLS). Gun Owners of America (GOA) has issued an alert stating that the long-anticipated anti-gun bill, first proposed by U.S. House Representative Carolyn McCarthy, D-NY, has now been introduced and formally sent to the House Judiciary Committee for debate.

The bill is H.R. 1022--the so-called 'Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007.' H.R. 1022 has 30 co-sponsors who make up the core group of the most virulent strain of anti-Second Amendment thugs in Congress.

GOA has issued an alert to its members, encouraging them to send letters, emails, faxes, and phone calls to Congressmen, strongly urging them to vote against this legislation.

Gun Owners of America has provided complete information, plus sample letters, at the link provided below.

We MUST not allow this rogue Congress to strip Americans of their Constitutional rights. They deserve a decisive defeat on this one--so stinging that they will think twice before introducing similar legislation in the future.

Newt's Got a Big Problem

Washington, DC (TLS). Newt Gingrich has emerged as one of the potential 'dark horse' candidates who could rise to the top of the pack at the last minute in the race toward the Republican Presidential nomination.

However, Newt's got a big problem.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) has published a complete informational rundown on the candidates in both Parties and how they stack up with regard to 2nd Amendment rights. According to Gun Owners of America, Newt often thwarted attempts to get gun rights bills placed on the docket when he was Speaker of the House, leading to less than admirable ratings by the GOA.

At one point, GOA states that Gingrich garnered no better than a grade of 'D' on gun rights.

What this means is that Gingrich is only one grade ahead of the dismal ratings of 'F' and 'F-' that GOA has given to candidates Giuliani and McCain. The GOA states that Romney has been all over the board so much on various issues, including gun rights, that it is difficult to tell what, exactly, the candidate truly believes about the 2nd Amendment.

By far the best candidates on gun rights are Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul, with Tom Tancredo moving up fast.

While Newt's stance on other issues of great interest to conservatives may, in the long run, overcome any weakness on gun issues, at this point it appears that he has a long way to go in convincing gun rights groups that he is our man.

On the other hand, none of the Democrats have anything that could be construed as an acceptable record on the 2nd Amendment, with the possible exception of Governor Bill Richardson. While the GOA has yet to rate Richardson on their grading scale, the rest of the pack among the Democrats rate an 'F' or worse...'F-' being the absolute worst (candidates Clinton, Obama, Biden, Dodd, and even Gore rate an 'F-').

Thus, a Gingrich candidacy would be much preferred over the likes of anything the Democrats have put forth.

Duncan Hunter on Gun Issues

Knoxville, TN (TLS). Ever since U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter, R-CA, announced his candidacy for the Republican Presidential nomination, The Liberty Sphere has been taking a periodic look at the candidate's stand on various issues.

Today we look at Hunter's stand on gun issues, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms, and the freedom of Americans to manufacturer and use ammunition.

Very few politicians in Washington or anywhere else can match Duncan Hunter's record on the issue of gun-and-ammo rights. As we have mentioned before, our favorite 2nd Amendment advocacy group, Gun Owners of America, has given Hunter the rare grade of 'A+' on gun issues.

In addition, the NRA has also given Hunter the rating of 'A+.'

While we have all the respect in the world for the NRA, it is actually much more difficult to attain Gun Owners of America's grade of A+ than it is to get the same rating from the NRA. We support both groups, but Gun Owners of America's standards are very tough when it comes to their perfect rating of A+.

What this means, of course, is that among citizens elected to public office within the United States, Duncan Hunter is part of an elite group of fierce defenders of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which recognizes and protects the right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms.

An important adjunct in the support of the 2nd Amendment is the support of the right to purchase ammunition for firearms without restriction. The Second Amendment is rendered null and void if politicians load up the U.S. Code and local laws with needless restrictions on the manufacturers of gun ammunition.

The politicians know this. Thus, their attempt to negate the 2nd Amendment by making it nearly illegal or impossible to manufacture and buy ammo is an underhanded, sleazy attempt to subvert the U.S. Constitution by the 'backdoor method.' This is one of the reasons why the forces of anti-freedom, such as the Brady Bunch and N.Y.C. Mayor Bloomberg, are targeting the manufacturers of ammunition.

Duncan Hunter is one politician that understand this and has a clear voting record of opposing attempts by the Left to pass restrictions on the manufacture and sale of bullets and other ammo.

Here is a small sampling of Hunter's votes on gun-related issues:

*Voted YES on prohibiting product misuse lawsuits on gun manufacturers. (Oct 2005)
*Voted YES on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse.(Apr 2003)
*Voted YES on decreasing gun waiting period from 3 days to 1. (Jun 1999)

The Liberty Sphere still views Duncan Hunter as the most attractive candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination. We are encouraged that over the past few weeks two high-profile conservatives have indicated the willingness to consider entering the race--Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich. Both of these candidates would be formidable against Democrats.

However, we still think that Duncan Hunter's views best represent ours and the majority of most Reagan conservatives. The only hurdle he faces is the monumental task of fund-raising. This is due to nothing more than the lack of name recognition.

Although the name recognition issue can be overcome in short order if one has the funds, Hunter will need to raise 100 million dollars by January 1, 2008 in order to overcome this handicap and mount a viable and competitive campaign against the heavy war-chests of Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Mitt Romney.

The Liberty Sphere is willing to give Hunter a shot in order to see if the candidate gains the broad-based appeal to raise that 100 million bucks. It's still a long way to Jan. 1, but this is a lot of money. It is time for Hunter's financial supporters to break out the checkbooks so that the candidate can take his campaign up to the next level.

LIBERTY ALERT! Gun Owners Target ATF

Washington, DC (TLS). This is a special Liberty Alert. Gun Owners of America has issued a special alert concerning the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Under the watch of U.S. Attorney-General Alberto Gonzalez, the 'BATFE' has had a haphazard and arbitrary manner of setting federal policy, often at the expense of gun manufacturers and gun owners.

For example, the Congressional Research Service found in 2005 that BATFE has no written guidelines for determining what is a firearm. Lacking in any clear definition to provide guidance, the agency has implemented arbitrary and often contradictory rules. The result has been decisions that negate one another, leading to confusion on the part of manufacturers who have suffered through confiscation of their products which had been previously determined to be legal.

Thus, Gun Owners of America has issued its alert for its members to urge President George W. Bush to reign in the Bureau.

Read the entire story of the dubious practices of the BATFE, phone numbers and contact information, and a sample letter to send to President Bush here:
