Ron Paul Predicts 15-Year Depression
U.S. Congressman and former GOP Presidential candidate Ron Paul has predicted a 15-year depression due to the current economic policies and the cumulative effect of the economic polices of the past few decades.
The Congressman maintains that no investment that is deemed by experts as 'safe' is actually safe.
As an advocate for small government and fiscal responsibility, Dr. Paul has been a consistent critic of the expansion of big government and the reckless spending of tax dollars by the current administration.

Notes From Here and There, 1/25/08
President Bush and Congressional Democrats were able to agree on a compromise economic stimulus package on Thursday which would provide between $300 and $600 in tax rebates per individual.
Mr. Bush had originally called for an $800 rebate to each individual taxpayer, with couples qualifying for a full $1600.
But in order to get a package approved, Democrats had to sign off on it, which means of course that the amount of the rebates will be significantly lower, thus proving that Republicans want Americans to have more of their own money back, while Democrats wish to keep it and would prefer, truth be told, to give NONE of it back.
With polls showing Mitt Romney pulling ahead of John McCain in Florida, the GOP candidates met for a debate in Boca Raton, Florida Thursday evening prior to the state's primary next Tuesday. Romney has gotten a boost of late from his emphasis on economic issues.
And, since Florida is a winner-take-all primary for the GOP, Romney could well walk away with 57 more delegates in one day.
The best line from the debate, however, came from Ron Paul. When asked if the government has a role in stimulating the economy, here was Dr. Paul's answer: 'The government does have a responsibility, but it's supposed to lower taxes, get rid of regulations and devise a monetary policy that makes some sense.'
We agree.
Democratic Presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich has withdrawn from the race without endorsing one of his Democratic colleagues. The candidate, who claims he saw a UFO, was heard mumbling to a reporter off-stage after he withdrew from the race that he had to meet up with some aliens.
Assuming that Kucinich meant illegal immigrants, the reporter followed the candidate only to witness him talking to himself as if he were speaking to persons who were not there.
Suddenly, the candidate disappeared into thin air after a strange looking spacecraft had been spotted, which then also quickly disappeared.
There has been broad speculation that Kucinich made a deal with outer space creatures who stated that if Kucinich would but withdraw from the race, they would take him on a 145-light-year tour of the entire universe.
Somebody up there likes us....
(OK, the part about the space creatures is written tongue-in-cheek, but Kucinich actually did withdraw from the race Thursday, and he actually did state he saw a UFO).

FRED HITS GRAND SLAM IN S.C. DEBATE
Republican Presidential hopeful Fred Thompson hit a grand slam during Thursday night's GOP debate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. An animated, assertive Thompson came out swinging, and apparently it paid off handsomely.
Fox News, which co-sponsored the debate, put together a focus group made up of highly likely GOP primary voters to watch the forum together by television in Charleston, SC.
Before the debate, only 3 of the roughly 30 citizens who made up the focus group stated that they supported Fred Thompson. After the debate, the overwhelming majority stated that Thompson won the debate and that they liked what they saw.
When asked who was the biggest loser in the forum, almost every single one said, 'Ron Paul.'
Small focus groups made up of Republican voters are much more reliable in their assessments than the unscientific and asinine polls that are taken immediately following the debates, polls which are open to persons who may not be Republican and who will not be voting in the primary.
Thus, no matter what Fox's poll or anyone else's poll may say, the people who count--those most likely to vote in the GOP primary on Jan. 19--are the only ones who matter.
And these are the very ones that Fred Thompson won over on Thursday evening.
One of the reasons cited by the focus group as a factor in giving Thompson such a favorable rating in the debate was the manner in which he went after Mike Huckabee's record as Governor of Arkansas.
In our view, such a thing was long overdue. Huckabee has essentially misrepresented himself around the country in many various ways, including his background--claiming he 'has a theological degree.' We have already totally discredited that claim right here on the Liberty Sphere.
But beyond that, Huckabee has a penchant for glossing over the bare facts that he raised taxes, increased the size and scope of government, and supported giving tuition breaks to illegal aliens.
Thompson outlined each of these aspects of the Huckabee record, making it clear that although the former Baptist preacher can turn on the charm and make people think he walks on water, he actually has a very public record from his days as Governor of Arkansas that anyone can research for themselves if they are interested in the truth.
And that record shows that Huckabee is no Ronald Reagan conservative except for abortion and gun rights. Outside of those two issues, Huckabee is a big government Republican who will raise taxes and increase the size of government at the drop of a hat if he thinks it is 'necessary to improve lives.'
That philosophy is called 'liberalism.'
But it took Fred Thompson to bring the ugly truth about Huckabee to the national stage, since nobody else was willing to do so.
The South Carolina Republican Primary is still 9 days away, and it is still way too early to tell who will win. But if the skeptical GOP focus group is any indication, Fred hit a grand slam on Thursday night that may well propel him to the top of the heap on Jan. 19.
It's about time.

Ron Paul Not the Only One Snubbed in N.H.
Ron Paul fans have made much about the fact that their candidate was snubbed by ABC News and Fox News Channel by excluding him from the New Hampshire Republican debates just prior to the New Hampshire Primary today.
They certainly have much to complain about. The actions of ABC and Fox were inexcusable and dastardly.
But Ron Paul was not the only one snubbed.
GOP Presidential hopeful Duncan Hunter also got the boot from the two debates. And he has already won a delegate to the Republican National Convention in the summer--a feat which Ron Paul has yet to match.
In fact, of the participants in the two debates--that is, those candidates that ABC and Fox ALLOWED to participate--only FOUR have won delegates--Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and Duncan Hunter.
As of yet John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and Ron Paul have not won any delegates officially. Yet both McCain and Giuliani were included in both debates in New Hampshire.
This fact was not lost on Duncan Hunter when he made his announcement today that he is staying in the race. The candidate took the opportunity to blast ABC and Fox News for excluding him, even though he already has a delegate, which, according to Hunter, 'is more than some who participated in those debates.'
Indeed. Both ABC and Fox News are deserving of hisses and boos for excluding both Hunter and Paul. In fact, it was truly a low-down thing to do.
There was a time when we expected better from Fox. Not anymore. As I have stated many times, as it has become clear that they are pushing Rudy Giuliani and blatantly snubbing or ignoring other candidates, they are actually approaching the reprehensible practices we have long loathed at ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN.

OBAMA OPENS DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD IN N.H.
U.S. Senator Barack Obama, D-Illinois, has opened a double-digit lead over Hillary Rodham Clinton in the New Hampshire pre-primary polls.
With the New Hampshire Primary looming in roughly 48 hours, Obama seems to be building upon his major victory in the Iowa Caucuses.
As for Mrs. Clinton, her disappointing 3rd-place showing in Iowa has her campaign totally stunned and frantically searching for a way to minimize the impact of her losses and come up with a new strategy that will put her back in the lead.
But New Hampshire is not the end of Mrs. Clinton's woes. The South Carolina Primary is coming up quickly in January, and once again the former First Lady finds herself losing her footing in a state where she once held a solid lead.
Polls are showing that Barack Obama is continuing to gain ground in South Carolina, with some showing him neck-and-neck with Mrs. Clinton while others show him in a solid lead.
Many pundits in the state expect that Obama will win South Carolina as well.
This highlights a scenario to which The Liberty Sphere pointed several months ago in which we predicted that Mrs. Clinton would lose the first three major primaries to Obama. While this will certainly give the Illinois Senator a great deal of momentum, we expect that momentum to come to screeching halt by the time the Florida Primary rolls around.
By then more rationally-minded Democrats will have had time to pause to consider just how terribly risky and dangerous it is to support a political novice who has ZERO foreign policy knowledge.
The same can be said for Mike Huckabee on the Republican side.
Neither candidate has the experience or the gravitas to represent the most powerful nation on earth on the world stage in an era where one single mistake could result in a mushroom cloud over a U.S. city.
And let's not forget the continuing volatility of Pakistan--a major nuclear power.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, the two candidates who had the most experience in these matters have dropped out of the race--Joe Biden and Chris Dodd. The rest are essentially political novices.
Even Mrs. Clinton is to be preferred over Obama or Edwards, given that the former First Lady has at least some practical knowledge of world politics, though not extensive.
When it comes to foreign policy and world terrorism the Republicans still have a distinct advantage over the Democrats, with the exception of Mike Huckabee who showed us recently that his grasp of the situation in Pakistan is alarmingly lacking.
Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul each have considerable experience, wisdom, and gravitas to deal with volatile situations on the world stage.
Thus, when the Democrats come back to their senses, we suspect that they will realize that Hillary, even with all of her baggage and weaknesses, is their best bet.

Ron Paul Radio Ad
I heard a Ron Paul radio ad yesterday...the first I've heard in this area. And, I must say that it was very well-done. The ad featured college students who spoke of the reasons why they support Ron Paul.
One said she liked him because he wants to get us out of Iraq. Another said it was the issue of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights that drew him to the Paul campaign. Still another stated that Paul seemed to be the only one talking seriously about liberty and keeping government small and accountable.
Whether or not one is in the Ron Paul camp at this point, one must admit that ads such as these hit the nail on the head. Dr. Paul appeals to a large segment of college students, which is precisely what we want if we wish to preserve liberty for posterity.
In addition, the values and concepts emphasized by the Paul campaign are catching on among the college set in many countries besides America. Many if not most of the protest movements against oppressive governments in the world are spawned and promoted by college students.
Even if many of us prefer another candidate at this point in the campaign, we can truly take heart in the fact that Ron Paul is apparently inspiring a surge of interest in the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and the principles of liberty among the leaders of tomorrow.

Maybe Ron Paul Needs a Second Look
A faithful reader of The Liberty Sphere, whose opinion I have come to value, has made up his mind to support Ron Paul for President. Normally I would simply chalk up such a thing to differences of opinion and move on.
But perhaps Ron Paul deserves a second look.
This is not to say I am on the brink of endorsing Mr. Paul, though I would not hesitate to vote for him if he is the GOP nominee. I simply believe that such a prospect is a long shot at best.
Mr. Paul, no doubt, has some credible ideas that have their basis in Jeffersonian thought. And there is no doubt that he is perhaps the lone voice of Constitutional reverence and adherence in American politics today.
No doubt Mr. Paul appeals to a broad cross-section of American voters in both Parties who want us out of Iraq. But most of those respondents state that they want our withdrawal contingent upon a plan to make the region stable and America the clear winner.
Mr. Paul does not hint that he is willing to give us such a plan. The only thing he has said, essentially, is that just as we entered Iraq we can simply leave Iraq.
It is much more complicated than that, however.
Further, Mr. Paul receives high marks for his contention that the Constitution mandates a declaration of war by Congress before U.S. troops can be sent into battle. Generally this is true, but the War Powers Act gives Presidents more leeway than that in a world in which split-second decisions can make the difference between life and death for millions of Americans.
Fred Thompson has also stated he would go to Congress before committing the U.S. military to war, but Thompson recognizes the prudence of the provisions of the War Powers Act in the modern era.
It is unclear if Mr. Paul grasps the extreme importance of a U.S. President being willing to act quickly under the provisions of the War Powers Act without being given the go-ahead from Congress first. In a world filled with terrorism it is unrealistic to expect the President as Commander in Chief to wait until Congress deliberates and gives its approval in the event of a major terrorist attack against Americans.
Those wasted hours could mean the horrifying loss of thousands, if not millions, of lives.
In addition, Mr. Paul gains much support due to his support of the Second Amendment. But he is not the only GOP candidate who has the credentials to speak with credibility on the subject of gun rights. Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Fred Thompson in particular are staunch supporters of the citizens' right to keep and bear firearms.
As I have often stated, I am by no means anti-Ron Paul. There is much about the candidate that can be praised and admired. Yet there are numerous pitfalls as well. Until I get answers to my questions about the issues raised here, I am still unconvinced that he is the best candidate to go head-to-head against Hillary Clinton.

The Fred Watch: The Oct. 21 GOP Debate
The Liberty Sphere has been keeping its ever-keen eye on Fred Thompson of late, checking to see if there is anything to the rumors that his campaign is faltering.
Based upon the Oct. 21 Fox News-GOP Presidential debate, we would assess that Thompson exhibited great strength and resolve, often going on the attack against the two who have made the most noise, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney.
The only thing we have to say about Thompson's offensive is that it's about time. Both Rudy and Mitt are long overdue an accounting for their positions on various issues through the years.
And no amount of verbal calisthenics can change or hide their record.
Thompson even suggested that Romney's positions have sometimes been to the left of Ted Kennedy, of all people. And regarding Giuliani, Thompson castigated the former Mayor for his support for federal funding of abortion, his support for ultra-liberal Democrat Mario Cuomo for Governor of New York, and his support for gun control.
These are all issues with which GOP voters need to begin to hold Giuliani accountable. The same can be said for Romney.
The bottom line? The Thompson campaign is nowhere near faltering. The Senator has his own unique style that may at times be fodder for critics with a vested interest in seeing him falter--such as Ron Paul supporters and even the Giuliani and Romney campaigns.
If anything, Thompson demonstrated that he is Presidential material, a serious contender for the White House, and quite possibly the most electable candidate among the GOP contenders.

GOP Picture Grows Murky
With U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, out of the race for the White House, the question becomes where will social conservatives go.
It is not as if they had no other options than Brownback. But the social conservatives have been split between several candidates, and with one of them gone the others stand to gain.
Several of the current GOP Presidential hopefuls could potentially benefit from Brownback's departure, given their pro-life stance. These include Duncan Hunter, Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney.
Even John McCain could benefit, given his lifelong support of right-to-life.
Giuliani's front-runner status in national polls cannot be trusted at this point, given that the numbers have tended to swing wildly.
Currently some polls show Giuliani with a 10-point lead over 2nd place contender Fred Thompson. Yet Giuliani's problems are mounting with some of his views on social issues.
Further, some GOP activists are beginning to openly question the Fred Thompson candidacy. It seems that more than a few of the GOP faithful were miffed that Thompson gave a very short speech to a forum in Florida on Saturday, in contrast to the other candidates.
Thompson spoke for only a few minutes and then abruptly left the stage, leaving many scratching their heads.
In one of the early primary states, South Carolina, the field of front-runners is getting crowded. Thompson, Huckabee, and Romney are within the margin of error to be considered a statistical tie.
Both Romney and Giuliani are counting on the early primaries to gain traction, such as Iowa and Florida. Romney leads in Iowa while Giuliani leads in Florida. Yet Giuliani polled a dismal eighth at a GOP forum in D.C. early in the day on Saturday.
Does this mean that a truly dark horse could come galloping to the front to save the day? Ron Paul waits in the wings despite the nervousness many GOP operatives feel about his candidacy.
The mere fact that the GOP field is this murkey with a little over 2 months to go to the primary season is reason to believe that the field is wide-open.

Comments on Oct. 9 GOP Debate in Dearborn
As expected, Fred Thompson loomed large in the GOP debate in Dearborn, Michigan Tuesday afternoon. After skipping out on all previous debates, given that he was not yet a candidate, the fact that Thompson has skyrocketed to a statistical tie with Rudy Giuliani meant that all eyes were on Fred.
Thompson even occupied the center stage in the debate, which inadvertently served to further highlight his looming stature, figuratively and literally.
Chris Matthews asked Thompson the first question of the debate. Thompson seemed to lose his train of thought at one moment during his answer. But after a rusty first shot out of the starting gate, the candidate proceeded to show that he can stand toe-to-toe with the big guys on the national stage.
Thompson's answers were down-to-earth, folksy, and exhibited his vast knowledge of legal and Constitutional issues after spending decades as an attorney.
While Thompson may not have lived up to the unrealistic expectations of those who expected him to be someone he is not, such as Ronald Reagan, the candidate nonetheless established himself as one who can hold his own with rivals who have been on the stage now for months.
Duncan Hunter also posted a strong performance, particularly on the issue of how the Chinese have taken advantage of U.S. trade policies to come back and hurt us.
The question was asked of all the candidates if they would go on record as supporting whoever wins the GOP nomination for President. Several candidates hedged, including Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, and Sam Brownback.
Mr. Paul insisted that his litmus test was the War in Iraq and whether or not the GOP nominee promises to get us out. Clearly Mr. Paul knows that several top-tier GOP candidates, one of whom is likely to be the nominee, clearly do not share his views on Iraq. Does this mean that he will support Hillary? Or perhaps turn to a third Party?
If this is the intent of Mr. Paul, surely he knows that such a move will hand the election to Hillary. And if he follows through and does such a thing, he not only will lose all of my respect but be relegated to the ash-heap of political history along side of the likes of Ross Perot.
Perot's misguided and laughable campaign as a third Party candidate in 1992 is the single reason Bill Clinton was elected President. If Ron Paul does a similar thing, he will hand the election to yet another Clinton.
And this raises a serious political question. In terms of campaign strategy, when a candidate uses tactics that he/she knows at the start will help elect a sworn political opponent, does this not mean that the candidate in question in actuality supports the opponent who benefits from those tactics?
After all, every single Democratic candidate has pledged to 'get us out of Iraq.' Since this seems to be the Paul litmus test, I suppose he would rather support Hillary or Kucinich than a member of his own Party.
Not a single GOP candidate can be described as a European-styled Socialist. Yet most if not all of the Democratic candidates are exactly that.
But who cares? At least they will 'get us out of Iraq.'
Mike Huckabee, as always, posted a fine debate performance this evening. It is easy to see why many refer to his 'rising star' status within the Republican Party with his quick wit and thoughtful answers.
With regard to the rest of the field of candidates--McCain, Giuliani, Romney--all did well and provided thoughtful answers to a range of questions on Social Security, healthcare, open markets, taxes, and government spending.
Based upon the answers given in this afternoon's debate, The Liberty Sphere will rate each of the GOP candidates based upon our exclusive 'liberty scale' which focuses on these key issues: taxes, gun rights, abortion, immigration control, national defense, the War on Terror, and U.S. foreign policy.

GOP 3rd Quarter Fundraising Totals
Republican Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani continued to lead the pack in fundraising, bringing in $11 million during the 3rd quarter.
Mitt Romney comes in at a close 2nd with $10 million dollars raised. But campaign sources disclosed that Romney put over $8 million of his own money into his campaign, meaning that he actually raised less than $2 million during the third quarter.
This is precisely why The Liberty Sphere has maintained that Romney's campaign is largely fluff and that his money carefully conceals the lack of support the candidate has been able to garner throughout the country.
Fred Thompson's 3rd quarter campaign earnings were much better than expected and topped earlier reports. The Thompson campaign reports that the candidate raised over 9 million during the 3rd quarter, the vast majority of that coming in during the month of September.
John McCain's totals for the 3rd quarter stand at $5 million--a vast improvement over projections. This would tend to support the candidate's contention that his campaign is experiencing a turn-around.
Ron Paul also raised $5 million during the 3rd quarter--his best showing to date. Yet Mr. Paul comes out ahead of McCain due to the fact that McCain was $2 million in the red, meaning that he has only $3 million to spend. Mr. Paul has most if not all of his $5 million to spend.
The rest of the Republican field of candidates raised much less than the top 5.
Thus, the Liberty Sphere offers an assessment of the success of the top 5 candidates based upon 2 factors--the total funds raised from the citizens and the amount of available cash on hand to spend.
Given these 2 important factors there are only 2 GOP candidates who approach the 4th quarter from a position of strength as compared to the rest of the field. Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson are in the best financial shape of all. Giuliani is way out in front in terms of available cash to spend, and Thompson comes in 2nd with roughly 8 million in available cash.
Mitt Romney's position in the field of candidates is a bit difficult to assess. From month to month it has been hard to track exactly how much of his campaign cash came from donors and how much he spent of his own money. The candidate has deep pockets, no doubt, and he is thus a major force with which to be reckoned. But it would be a mistake to place too much credence in Romney's ability to spend.
Thus, Ron Paul in our view comes in third with a solid showing of 5 million. His ability to run a frugal campaign relying on an army of Internet supporters has enabled the candidate to keep most of the money he has raised. He is in fairly good shape, and it would be a mistake to count him out.
John McCain is still a viable candidate. The Liberty Sphere had all but given up on his campaign for dead a couple of months ago. But the candidate has shown resilience and determination, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
McCain has also said he has heard the outcry of the citizens against his amnesty immigration reform bill, and he has thus changed his views to match those of the citizens who want our borders secure and illegal immigration stopped. We would still like to hear him say more about the glaring mistake of the McCain-Feingold act against free speech. If he comes clean about that, he could well be a come-from-behind candidate.
It certainly helped McCain to appear at the NRA and remind the nation that he has been a longtime supporter of 2nd Amendment rights. The NRA has given him fairly good marks through the years, despite the GOA's rating of 'F.' It is to be remembered, however, that the GOA's criteria for rating politicians is very strict, much more so than the NRA's.
While McCain is certainly not our 1st choice, not even our 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice, he is someone we could see ourselves supporting against Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, or for that matter ANY of the Democratic candidates.
But for now, we are pleased to see that Thompson is coming on strong, and we fully expect his fundraising to show even more success during the 4th quarter.
