Voters Say Being 'Like Reagan' Is Most Positive Thing One Can Say About a Candidate

Scott Rasmussen does polls on just about every question of consequence imaginable. In one of his latest polls he asked a sampling of voters what is the most positive thing that could be said about a political candidate.

By far the voters stated that being 'like Reagan' is the most positive quality one could ask for in a candidate.

But some of the other terms we normally use to describe politicians have taken on a clearly negative connotation:

"Progressive” is becoming more of a dirty word, but all political labels – except “being like Ronald Reagan” - are falling into disfavor with many U.S. voters, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

“Liberal” is still the worst and remains the only political description that is viewed more negatively than positively. Being like Reagan is still the most positive thing you can say about a candidate.

Thus, liberals and progressives are viewed negatively while Reagan is viewed positively. Read the entire poll at Rasmussen Reports.

The Reagan Doctrine and Obama's Disgrace

Compare/contrast stellar examples of strength in foreign policy, such as Ronald Reagan in the U.S. and Winston Churchill in Great Britain on the one hand, with stark examples of failure, such as Barack Obama in the U.S. and Neville Chamberlain in Great Britain on the other.

Columbia Conservative Examiner does exactly that today in this article entitled, 'The Reagan Doctrine and Obama's Disgrace.'

It won't take long for astute readers to realize that what we are witnessing today in the White House is a recipe for abject failure and an intensification of danger around the world.

22nd Anniversary of Reagan's Berlin Wall Speech

This is absolutely, positively one of the top 10 speeches ever given by a U.S. President--maybe even in the top 5.

On this day when we commemorate a speech that actually helped to change history, take a look at a real American patriot in action--the late, great Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Hope and Change for the Other Side

Now that it is clear that The Chairman and his Politburo will rise to power in Washington, it is time for the other side to consider the mantra of 'hope and change.'

Frankly, the only hope the GOP has of turning around 2 straight losses in 2006 and 2008 is to change direction.

Republicans must turn back to their core principles of low taxes, small government, balanced budgets, and a reduction in federal spending, or else they are going to get plastered once again by the voters.

Clearly the main reason the GOP has taken a hit in the last 2 election cycles is that they have acted more like Democrats than Republicans. And the choice of John McCain to head the ticket this year was simply one more big mistake based on the premise that the GOP must appear to be more 'moderate' to win.

On issue after issue, such as immigration control and securing our borders, opposing bailouts for large, mismanaged corporations, drilling here in America for our own oil and becoming energy independent, opposition to pork barrel spending, opposing the notion of 'redistribution of wealth,' support for tax cuts, and a host of other issues, Americans support the GOP by overwhelming numbers.

The problem was that poll after poll showed Americans were more afraid McCain would raise their taxes than Obama, the perception being that McCain is simply one more RINO who is just as untrustworthy as the Democrats on matters such as taxes.

Pat Toomey at National Review has an article that points out at least 2 ways the GOP can change direction and thus give hope to conservatives for winning in 2010 and 2012.

Laughing in His Grave

They called him 'nuts,' 'crazy,' and 'senile' for suggesting an idea that at the time seemed impossible.

Isn't that the way it's always been when it comes to visionaries who push society toward new advancements?

President Ronald Reagan was ridiculed as perhaps no President has been in modern times for his concept of a missile defense shield in space that would prevent a nuclear attack on the U.S.

Democrats, Liberals, European 'allies,' and even some 'moderate' Republicans jokingly referred to the concept as 'Star Wars,' meaning, of course, that the entire notion was nothing more than fantasy born from a popular movie series at the time.

They said it couldn't be done.

Ronald Reagan must be laughing in his grave.

Not only can it be done, but it IS being done, and Europe wants it.

Suddenly our European neighbors think that 'Star Wars' is an excellent idea. Of course, it took the Russian Menace to rear its ugly head again in order for them to warm up to the idea.

Funny how very real threats to life and property lead people and nations to do things they previously claimed were 'unnecessary' in a 'civilized world.' Funny that not everybody in this 'civilized world' is civilized.

Although it took the Europeans over 20 years to come around to seeing the importance of Reagan's concept of a defensive missile shield, at least they can be pragmatic when their backs are up against the wall.

Reagan had the foresight to propose the defense shield before America's back was up against the wall.

Russian Menace Grows Dangerous

In its most defiant act of aggression yet, the Russian menace continued to delve deeper into Georgia, taking Georgian 'prisoners of war' and seizing U.S. humvees in the area.

Most of us who remember the Cold War with the old Soviet Union are very familiar with these tactics undertaken by what was known at the time as 'the Great Menace.'

President Ronald Reagan referred to the Menace as 'an evil empire.'

It is time we had some Ronald Reagan-style leadership on the Russian menace today. They have shown to the entire world that they have returned to the tactics of the old Communist Soviet Union and are still every bit the Great Menace and Evil Empire that they have always been.

The new Russian President, Vladimir Putin's puppet, even made fun of NATO on Tuesday in light of an emergency meeting of the organization's leadership concerning the growing Soviet threat.

The U.S. and the free world cannot allow the acts of such a rogue, lawless nation to go without a decisive response.

Moscow obviously thinks it has the free world over a barrel. There was another time in history when it thought the same thing, only to find that with the emergence of Ronald Reagan and his carefully-crafted threats to the Soviets it became obvious that the U.S. was not going to back off or allow the Menace to continue its march toward world domination.

Are there options other than military force in response to these modern-day acts of aggression by Russia?

Of course there are. We can isolate them. We can cut them off from trade. We can cut off their supplies that flow from the West. We can use all of the diplomacy at our disposal.

But at the end of the day, when all else has failed, as Ronald Reagan demonstrated the use of force or threatened force is the only language the Russian barbarians understand.

And yes, Reagan even called them barbarians.

The barbarians need to understand that there are serious, deadly, and totally destructive military consequences to acts such as the Russians perpetrated in Georgia.

The missile shield Poland wants from the U.S. should be in place...yesterday. And when the U.S. Patriot missiles are put into place in Poland, we should make it clear to Putin and his paper tiger puppet that those missiles are aimed not only at Iran but Moscow as well.

So Long, Senator Helms

When I was coming of age in politics back in the early 70s while working with William F. Buckley Jr.'s 'Young Americans for Freedom,' Jessie Helms of North Carolina was quickly becoming an icon in Southern conservative politics.

For years Helms had provided conservative commentary on television through Raleigh's WRAL-TV and on the statewide farmer's network.

And thus, by the time he ran for the Senate in 1972 he was a household name throughout North Carolina. His victory that year would be the first is a series of consecutive Senate races that Helms won. He retired from the Senate in 2002 having never lost an election.

As with William F. Buckley and Young Americans for Freedom, Helms was instrumental in getting Ronald Reagan elected to the White House in 1980 and again in 1984. And like Reagan, Helms was famous for tagging his opponents with the dreaded 'L' world, and once you were tagged as a 'Liberal' you were sunk.

Of course, the Democrats at the time gave Reagan and Helms plenty of good reason to regard their opponents with such contempt. This was the era of George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, and local Democrats such as Jim Hunt.

Once Helms labeled his 1984 Senatorial opponent Jim Hunt as a 'Mondale liberal,' the race was all over.

Helms achieved the status of being known as 'Senator No' in the Senate due to his fierce opposition to government spending and new federal programs. He often single-handedly blocked legislation in the face of a Democrat steam-roller and at times even flew in the face of some of his Republican colleagues...even President Reagan himself.

This kind of steadfast, principled leadership on governmental restraint is sorely lacking in both Parties on Capitol Hill today.

It should also not be forgotten that Helms was a fierce advocate for building up the nation's defense after four years under Jimmy Carter during which our military suffered from a shocking lack of attention and funding.

Though many would dispute or ignore Helm's impact on politics, there is no doubt that he was the most powerful Southern Senator and at one time one of the most powerful men in government, under Ronald Reagan. His leadership helped usher in a 25 year era of conservative politics which stemmed the tide of the creeping crawl of statism.

Senator Jessie Helms of Monroe, North Carolina, died this week at the age of 86. A lifelong Baptist, Helms was a member of the prestigious Hayes-Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. It is there that his funeral will be held today.

I fear that we shall not see his kind ever again. So long, Senator Helms...

Hillary Claims Oil Prices Drop Immediately if Elected

In a stunning display of desperation, Hillary Rodham Clinton claimed on Sunday in Iowa that if she is elected oil prices will experience a dramatic sudden drop.

FACT CHECK! In actuality, Mrs. Clinton has repeatedly stated during her campaign for President that the federal tax on oil should be dramatically increased and that she plans on 'taking that money from oil companies,' referring to robbing the corporations and their stockholders of millions of dollars of profits in order to set up a federal fund to explore alternative fuels.

These proposals will do anything but cause oil prices to drop.

The government already gets roughly 6 times the amount per gallon in taxes than the oil companies make in profits. Yet Mrs. Clinton proposes raising the federal tax on gas at the pump, where by the time you add local, state, and federal taxes we are already paying between 50 and 60 cents per gallon.

The oil companies make a mere 13 cents per gallon in profits.

In addition, if Mrs. Clinton is going to raid the profits of the oil companies and their shareholders, you can bet your last drop of Texas-T that gas prices will go through the roof. This kind of anti-capitalism and anti-business, closely akin to Hugo Chavez, will not exactly reassure oil company execs that they can safely reduce prices.

Mrs. Clinton went further to make some of the most outlandishly erroneous statements she has ever uttered. She claims that Jimmy Carter was 'on the right track' in the late 70s in reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

FACT CHECK!! I remember those days very well because I had to travel by car extensively. During Jimmy Carter's term in office, 1976-1980, gas prices went from roughly 44 cents per gallon to over ONE DOLLAR per gallon in 1979.

There were long gas lines and shortages as well.

Yet Hillary states that Brother Jimmy was 'on the right track.'

Well, if that was the right track, I would surely hate to see what the WRONG track would have been. And if we were 'on the right track' then Ronald Reagan would not have beaten the socks off of politically impotent Carter.

But stay with me. There's even more.

Hillary went further to state that Ronald Reagan 'dismantled' the 'good work' Carter was doing with regard to energy.

FACT CHECK!! The only thing President Reagan dismantled was the asinine, boneheaded, and imbecilic policies of the Carter Administration, which led to gas shortages, long lines at the pump, and gas prices that more than doubled.

After Reagan had been in office less than a year, gas prices settled back down to below 75 cents per gallon. Long lines at the pump vanished. And there were no more shortages.

You see, my friends, liberals/socialists like Hillary Clinton believe that the citizens should be forced to endure pain and suffering as a means of mandating a change in their lifestyle. And, since they have always had a Freudian issue with oil, the objective is to make it as expensive and hard to get as possible so that Americans will be forced to turn to something else.

The only reason husband Bill didn't do this in the 1990s is that he is much more of a shrewd politician than Hillary. Even so, Clinton raised federal taxes on oil.

No doubt Hillary sincerely believes the balderdash she has just unleashed. But I never thought she was dumb enough to say so right out in the open just days before the Iowa Caucuses.

She is desperate, no doubt. And she is betting on picking up some votes from those who merely hear the 5-second sound-byte, 'Oil prices will drop immediately if I am elected.'

But then again, maybe the stress of the campaign trail is really starting to get to her. This is the stuff of loony-'toons, not serious leaders.

Pain Control Highlights Flawed U.S. War on Drugs

The 'War on Drugs' is a war that should have never been fought. Hindsight is 20/20, and while President Ronald Reagan had good intentions in implementing the war in the early 1980s, he was enough of a pragmatist to recognize that a policy had failed, even his own.

While Reagan exhibited a remarkable and admirable ability to adhere steadfastly to broad principles, such as limited government, low taxes, a strong defense, and maximized personal liberty, he could also demonstrate a sometimes surprising flexibility that led him to reverse some of his earlier decisions.

The war on drugs has been an abject failure, and had Reagan lived to see its effects, I have absolutely no doubt that he would say so and support changing the policy.

The U.S. has spend billions of dollars fighting this war that has proved to be an exercise in futility, resulting in a massive crime-and-violence plagued black market and a powerful gang of drug lords in this country and outside this country who are rolling in dough.

If the U.S. were to end the war on drugs and de-criminalize simple possession and use, upwards of 60% of the prison beds in the nation today would be freed up for the incarceration of violent criminals. As it stands, non-violent drug offenders occupy an estimated 60% of prison space at a time when we are bombarded with stories of 'prison overcrowding.'

That overcrowding would end immediately if we were to release from prison non-violent drug offenders. Our streets would be safer due to the fact that the truly violent criminals would stay locked up rather than be subject to early release or parole due to prison overcrowding.

But the single most telling example that American culture's handling of drugs is flawed rests in the manner in which we deal with pain control.

Many physicians within the U.S. have been slow to adopt adequate pain control measures for their patients. The stories are many, and some of them are frightening.

Yet hospitals within the U.S. have for years insisted that pain control is perhaps the central issue in adequate medical care, apart from a competent, accurate, and timely ability to address the immediate medical issue at hand.

This is why at each interval along the continuum of care a patient receives at a hospital, beginning at admission and ending at discharge, a regular assessment is made to determine the patient's pain level.

If you have had surgery in the past seven years, one of the very first questions you were asked upon awaking from surgery--if you remember those moments--is, 'Describe your pain level on a scale of one to ten.' And if your pain level is determined to be moderate to severe, based upon the scale, you are immediately given medications to control your pain.

Yet with some doctors and nurses across the land, the ability to release archaic notions about pain medications has been painfully slow. One of the most often expressed concerns is the notion that giving pain control medications will make addicts out of patients who have shown absolutely no history or propensity for becoming addicted to anything at all.

In spite of the problem of drug addiction in this country, the fact remains that the vast majority of Americans never exhibit the slightest hint of addiction to pain medications, which are dispensed liberally each day.

Further, there is a vast difference between addiction and dependence. A patient with rheumatoid arthritis, for example, is no doubt dependent on NSAIDs, i.e. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which control pain and inflammation. Their very lives depend on a daily regimen of these medications. Yet few in the medical community would dare suggest that these patients are addicted to such medications.

Addiction is an entirely different animal, involving the overwhelming desire for more and more of the drug whether one needs it or not, and a downward spiral of being totally consumed by that drug to the neglect of life's necessities.

The mere fact that pain returns to an excruciating and unmanageable level when the drug is withdrawn is evidence that the patient is not addicted to that drug, but that the drug is needed to control the pain, or else the patient's quality of life reaches an intolerably low level.

America's phobia concerning pain medications is gradually abating, but there are still pockets of resistance. There is the true anecdote, for example, that a terminal cancer patient was refused pain medication, within one week of his death, for the fear that he would become an addict before he died.

Such antiquated views have no place in modern medical care. And to a great degree, our antiquated views toward 'the war on drugs' are also out of place in modern society.

Perhaps it is time for us to graduate up to the 21st century.

NOTICE! The opinion-editorial piece above is in no way intended to be used for medical advice or to provide guidance on the consumption of any drug for any purpose. For such advice or guidance, consult with a certified, competent medical professional.

Cauldron Still Boils Under Chinese Surface

Very little has changed in China with regard to free speech and political dissent since the 1989 Tienanmen Square Massacre. Last week a political dissident by the name of Chen Shuqing was sentenced to four years in jail after being convicted in a Chinese court for 'inciting subversion.'

Chen had written extensively on many foreign websites about the need for freedom and constitutional rule in China.

China has a constitution that supposedly grants the freedom of expressing political opinion, though it rarely, if ever, upholds such liberty.

For example, in order for Google, Inc. to do business in the Communist nation, it had to agree to censor its search engine results within the country, deleting all references to the Tienanmen Square Massacre and to Taiwan's independence.

Google's highly unethical, un-American, and anti-Constitutional practices in China remains a thorn in the flesh to those of us who use the corporation's services. We happen to question whether such policies should be legal for an American corporation.

Although China had agreed to ease some of its restrictions on freedom of the press and freedom of speech in anticipation of the 2008 Olympics, human and media watch groups say that the country is cracking down on political dissent and the growing social unrest within its borders.

A Paris-based liberty watchdog group called 'Reporters Without Borders' says that 30 journalists and 50 Internet users have been arrested and detained in China, some remaining behind bars for nearly 20 years.

The group also ranks China a dismal 163rd out of 167 countries on its press freedom index.

Reporters Without Borders condemned the harsh sentence of Chen, referring to the actions of the Chinese government as 'appalling.' Even the lawyer representing Chen, Li Jianqiang, had his license to practice law suspended for a year due to his defense of cases involving freedom of the press.

The U.S. squandered a golden opportunity to use the 'bully pulpit' of the Presidency to defend the student dissidents who were summarily slaughtered, imprisoned, and oppressed by their own government during the 1989 Tienanmen Square incident.

Chinese university students by the tens of thousands took to the streets in 1989 to demand liberty. One cannot forget the one male student facing down a Chinese military tank with its huge guns pointed at him.

The standoff did not last long.

After attempting in vain to silence the protesters with fear tactics, the Chinese government lowered the boom on its own citizens, most of whom were the brightest young intellects in the country. Using its mighty military arsenal against unarmed dissidents, China crushed the pro-liberty demonstrations with massive bloodshed.

President George H.W. Bush maintained a low profile in the wake of such a tragedy.

Many believe that Bush the First placed expediency above principle when he refused to come to the defense of the student dissidents. After all, Bush had established close friends within the Chinese government early in his career as a foreign diplomat.

One cannot even begin to fathom Ronald Reagan doing such a thing had he been President. In fact, it is a near certainty that had Reagan still been in office a very different scenario would have developed, possibly leading to a human rights showdown with the Communist country, much as he had done with the Soviet Union.

With Bush the First's capitulation to the Chinese government, the student dissidents were essentially left hanging out to dry all on their own.

Bill Clinton was no better than Bush the First. In fact, one of the driving forces of the Tienanmen Square uprising, Chai Ling, was appalled that President Bill Clinton went to China in 1999 and saluted some of the very same soldiers who killed many of her friends during the 1989 protest.

The thing that oppressive governments never learn is that the thirst for liberty never dissipates but only grows the more a society is oppressed. And since 1989 the student movement that burst forth demanding liberty has been publicly silenced but not destroyed.

In fact, the cauldron of unrest still boils just under the Chinese surface, and the Chinese government knows it.

This is the reason that despite their reassurances, the government still cracks down harshly on all political dissent.

And for this reason, American corporations such as Google are complicit in the Chinese oppression of its people. It almost goes without saying that Google and others like it deserve to be harshly condemned.

Reagan Adviser Michael Deaver, RIP

He once stated in a television interview that he loved Ronald and Nancy Reagan. The look in his eyes, the body language, the facial expressions as he spoke those words had a congruence that told us that what he was saying was the absolute truth.

And his actions were entirely consistent with his expression of devotion.

Michael Deaver, former top aide to President Ronald Reagan, died Saturday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 69.

Deaver was part of an elite group--the inner circle that managed the political affairs of President Reagan. That inner circle was very small, consisting of Deaver, Edwin Meese III, and James Baker III.

But it was Deaver alone who had been with the President the longest and who was counted by the Reagans not only as a trusted adviser but as a very close friend.

Deaver was one of only a handful of non-family members to be allowed visits with the former President as Alzheimer's Disease had robbed him of most of his memory. One such meeting in particular was during the late-1990s. By then Reagan had lost his memory of everyone except for Nancy.

Mindful that the former President loved horses, Deaver brought Reagan a gift that day--a large book containing photographs of horses. As the frail Reagan opened the book and looked at one of the pictures, he looked up at Deaver, eyes shining, as he pointed to the picture and said, merely, 'Horse!'

It was the only thing Reagan said during the entire visit.

Michael Deaver joined the Reagan team very shortly after Reagan was elected as Governor of California in 1966. It was there that he met the woman who would become his wife, who was also a Reagan staffer.

From 1966 forward, Deaver was a key player in Reagan's political career. As a former Hollywood actor Reagan believed that public perception and image were just as important as words and substance...not that Reagan's pronouncements were in any way lacking in substance.

'The Great Communicator,' as he was called, delivered some of the most eloquent and memorable speeches in the history of the Republic.

But it was Deaver who made sure that the backdrop and settings of these magnificent speeches were every bit as memorable.

For example, when Reagan went to the beaches of Normandy to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Allied Invasion during WWII, it was Deaver who insisted that the speech be given against the backdrop of that breathtaking overlook that peered downward to the shores where the troops landed that day.

Reagan proceeded to deliver one of the most moving speeches ever given in the history of the free world.

Deaver left the Reagan White House in 1985 to pursue his own business interests, establishing Michael K. Deaver and Associates as a major public affairs firm. The pressures of life in Washington, however, took their toll on Deaver, who began drinking heavily. Although he got sober later that same year, he was convicted of perjury in 1986 and was sentenced to community service in an recovery-based organization.

Many wondered why President Reagan did not issue Deaver a pardon. When the Reagan Diaries were released for the first time earlier this year, we found the answer.

Reagan kept copious notes and was a prolific writer. In the diary we find an entry penned by Reagan which noted that a Presidential pardon was indeed offered to Deaver. But Deaver refused to accept it. He preferred instead to serve out his sentence.

And this was perhaps the glimpse into the true character of the man. Deaver had dropped the ball and made some mistakes. When he got sober he took responsibility for those mistakes. And for the next 20 years he remained involved with the recovery program in Washington called 'Clean and Sober Streets.'

For the last 14 years of his life, Deaver was prominent in Edelman, a public relations firm. He became Chairman of Edelman's Washington office in 2006, the same year he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Without exception friends and career associates of Michael Deaver attest to the character, sincerity, and loyalty of the man.

Presidents need trusted advisers with those qualities. Deaver served Mr. Reagan and his country admirably. May he truly rest in peace.

Reagan's War

President Ronald Reagan will forever be remembered in American history for four basic things: bringing back a sense of pride, hope, optimism, and patriotism to the American experience; ushering in a sweeping change in government that repudiated Liberalism and affirmed the founding Constitutional principles of our forefathers; building up the U.S. military that had been gutted under Jimmy Carter; and winning the Cold War and breaking the back of Communism.

All of these components were central to the success of the Reagan Presidency. However, it was winning the Cold War outright and ending the Communist domination of Eastern Europe that perhaps best defines how Reagan will be remembered.

Another war, however, was initiated during the Reagan years that has not had such smashing success. It is the U.S. Government's 'war on drugs.'

Two ironic truths stand out concerning the Reagan Presidency. One, in spite of Reagan's insistence on small government, lower government spending, and balanced budgets, the budget deficit skyrocketed during his Presidency, and government actually continued to grow. Two, in spite of Reagan's belief that 'government should get off the backs of the citizens,' some contend that government actually increased its intrusion into our lives with the launching of the so-called 'war on drugs.'

The first of these has a very simple explanation. Reagan was forced to deal with a Democratic-controlled Congress during most of his Presidency, with the exception of a couple of years when Republicans controlled the Senate. It was common practice for Democrats during those days to operate out of a deficit. Balanced budgets were only a dream. And thus, Reagan had to deal with reality in working with a Congress that was oppositional and sometimes openly hostile to his views.

The second, the war on drugs, was an ill-conceived plan when hindsight is taken into consideration. Yet, during the time in question, the war on drugs was entirely understandable.

This was the early 1980s. Drugs had already ravaged an entire generation of young Americans, many of whom died or whose lives were permanently hampered by their use of dangerous substances.

The mindset at the time was, 'do something to stop it.' And that usually meant banning whatever the offending substance happened to be.

While the rationale for the war on drugs is understandable when one considers the times and the context, the campaign launched a dangerous chain of events that led to more government intrusion into our lives, massive government spending, making criminals out of those whose only crime was being terribly addicted to bad substances, and an ever-expanding police state to reign in a problem that continues to this day to rage out of control.

This has led Reagan supporters such as venerable conservative William F. Buckley to call for an end to the war on drugs, a legalization of simple possession and use, and an emphasis on rehab for addicts.

In short, the war on drugs failed. It is a continuing failure to this very day.

Part of Reagan's success was his ability to make mid-course adjustments when needed. He was refreshingly flexible for someone who held so strongly to his core conservative principles. But when something didn't work, he could see it and make changes.

Like Prohibition during the early part of the 20th century, the war on drugs has only resulted in higher crime, a huge and uncontrollable black market, and an increase in use resulting from the desire to do the forbidden. Americans were smart enough to see the failure of Prohibition and repealed it.

It is time to end the war on drugs. Reagan would have it no other way.

FRED THOMPSON MOVES TO TOP IN POLL

Washington, DC (TLS). Rasmussen Reports has been tracking poll data on all of the Presidential candidates from the beginning of the 2008 election campaign cycle and finds that as of today Fred Thompson has moved ahead of Rudy Giuliani to gain the number one position.

The Thompson bandwagon has been gradually gaining steam ever since the former Tennessee Senator and TV star announced to Fox News two months ago that he would consider a bid for the White House.

Yet no one imagined that the Senator would move to the top position in the polls even before formally announcing his candidacy. He has not appeared in any Republican debate. He has not aired any campaign ads on TV. His only overt shot at campaigning was in the form of a hilarious video blog on the Internet where Thompson responds to Michael Moore's challenge to a debate about Fidel Castro's Communist system of healthcare.

You can find that video right here on The Liberty Sphere at the end of the left-hand column.

In a related development, Thompson traveled to England to meet with former British Prime Minister and conservative icon Margaret Thatcher. President Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher formed a powerful conservative trans-Atlantic alliance in the 80s.

The elderly and frail Thatcher was once a powerful force with which to content when she forcefully and vigorously pursued conservative principles, including anti-Communism, in the face of heavy opposition in the British Parliament.

Thatcher's blessing on a Fred Thompson candidacy would be seen as a bona fide conservative 'seal of approval' in spite of the fact that Thatcher is not an American. Conservatives in this country well remember her valiant fight for liberty in a dangerous world, and her strong ties to Ronald Reagan give her opinions a great amount of weight with American conservatives.

With Hillary Clinton now running away with the Democratic nomination, pulling ahead of her closest rival Barack Obama by double-digits, Fred Thompson's bid for the White House becomes of crucial importance. Never before in the history of the country has an election been so important nor the choice any clearer. A European-styled Socialist who has stated repeatedly that she is going to take money from corporate profits vs. a Reagan Conservative who upholds the principles of the Constitution, such as personal liberty and free commerce.

Although Thompson has not yet announced, there is no doubt that Fred is IN. And today's good news from the Rasmussen Poll will certainly be no insignificant factor in Thompson's decision to run.

Part of the Reagan Legacy--A Piece of the Wall

Washington, DC (TLS). For millions of Americans born after the last world war, and yet old enough to remember much of the 2nd half of the 20th century, Ronald Reagan is THE quintessential American President by whom all others are judged.

As for me, NO ONE has even come close to Reagan's greatness.

But then, I am not exactly totally unbiased in this assessment. I began working for Reagan's ascendancy to the White House in the early 1970s--when most people still knew him only as the former Governor of California and a former Hollywood actor.

I joined Young Americans for Freedom, an organization that William F. Buckley founded at least a decade earlier, but by the time I came around the organization had two distinct purposes: one, to promote conservative values among America's college students, and two, to elect Ronald Wilson Reagan to the White House.

I have written at length in past posts concerning Reagan. Yet I never cease to be amazed and dazzled by the manner in which his legacy continues to live on.

The Reagan Library has an artifact that is a lasting legacy to the Reagan Presidency. It is a piece of the Berlin Wall. I still remember to this day my eyes filling up with tears as Reagan stood at that Wall--a symbol of oppression, murder, Communism, anti-freedom--and demanding, 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this Wall!'

Cap'n Bob and the Damsel have written a moving testimonial of a trip they made to the Reagan Library and seeing that piece of the Wall, which by the way, DID, indeed, come down.

Be sure to click on the link and read it. You will find a picture of that piece of the Wall, and you will also find the full text of Reagan's history-making speech at the Berlin Wall.

Albania Greets Bush as Beloved Hero

Washington, DC (TLS). President Bush was received in this former Soviet bloc country as a hero on Sunday as he became the very first American President to visit the impoverished Eastern European nation.

In statement that is sure to irk Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Bush stated that it is imperative that Albania continue on its process of independence--a statement that brought loud cheers from average Albanian citizens as well as their leaders.

Increasingly, the Putin regime is acting as if it wishes to return to the old paradigm of a Soviet Union, consisting of small nations dominated and ruled by one large, powerful Communist government located in Moscow.

It is clear that Putin repudiates the move toward liberty that was embraced by Boris Yeltsin and Michael Gorbachev.

Yet the nations that were once dominated and oppressed by Soviet Communists celebrate the American vision of liberty and independence and treat our leaders as heroes. Albania and Poland have been two of our staunchest allies in the War on Terror.

Poland has even begun the process of erecting statues to the memory of Ronald Reagan and naming several landmarks after the deceased former President.

Fred Thompson Bid Picking Up Steam

Washington, DC (TLS). Since Senator Fred Thompson announced yesterday that he is forming a Presidential candidacy exploratory committee, it seems that many who as yet have been sitting on the fence are jumping on the Thompson bandwagon.

Some of these supporters have a strong independent bent and tend to have a deep level of distrust for both Democrats AND Republicans.

But, as The Liberty Sphere reported months ago, a Fred Thompson candidacy has much that is attractive to such independent voters. Thompson is a different kind of candidate who will run a different kind of campaign. He is not afraid of innovation, including using the Internet and V-logs to send instant campaign videos to millions of voters.

Many have compared Thompson to Ronald Reagan, but we feel that this is a bit unfair. Let's face it, there will never be another Ronald Reagan, just as there will never be another Lincoln. But Thompson has that broad, widespread appeal that Reagan exhibited.

And it is a big mistake to write him off as just another actor. Before he was an actor and before he became a U.S. Senator, Thompson was a highly skilled and respected attorney, having served the nation during the Watergate hearings.

One blogger in particular, which you will see below, has even started his own movement of sorts called, 'Spread Fred.' Click here to read his interesting take on why he is now supporting Thompson after having been on the fence:

Reagan 'Inner Circle' Supports Fred Thompson

Washington, DC (TLS). During Ronald Reagan's climb up the political ladder, and his subsequent attaining of the Presidential office, he was able to assemble around him a group of highly loyal and astute aides and political operatives. Among these are Michael Dever, Edwin Meece, and former Tennessee Senator Howard Baker.

The Liberty Sphere has learned that the Reagan 'inner circle,' as they are called, are backing former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson's bid to become the Republican nominee for President.

In addition, sources tell us that Nancy Reagan herself is supporting Fred Thompson.

This news is significant in that all of the Republican Presidential nominees have, in one way or another, attempted to link themselves to Ronald Reagan. Yet not everyone who makes that claim truly fits the bill.

Reagan embraced religious conservatives. He also embraced non-religious conservatives. He reached out to socially conservative 'blue collar' Democrats. In short, he was able to piece together a massive coalition of various groups who shared one common ideal--the belief that America's greatness lies in HER PEOPLE and not in big government.

Big government conservatism would be an oxymoron to Reagan.

Fred Thompson embodies all of the Reagan ideals--small government, lower taxes, a strong defense, pro-life, a belief in the autonomy of the individual, and an undying optimism and belief that America's greatness can only be preserved by a constant diligence against the forces of oppression and anti-freedom.

Having been a part of 'the Reagan Revolution' as far back as the early 1970s, when I began working for Young Americans for Freedom, naturally I have a great amount of respect and affinity for the Reagan inner circle. The Reagan people appear to be of the same mind when it comes to the Republican nomination.

Early on, The Liberty Sphere threw our support behind Duncan Hunter. We still believe he is a good man who is the best candidate among those who have declared. However, this was before Fred Thompson suggested he may be interested in running.

Mr. Hunter, I am sorry to say, has had trouble raising the necessary funds to be competitive. This goes for most of the candidates. If Fred Thompson announces his candidacy, this writer would enthusiastically throw our support behind Thompson.

JIMMY CARTER THE WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY

Washington, DC (TLS). James Earl Carter, the worst President in U.S. history, has mouthed off yet again concerning matters he knows nothing about. This time, however, his statement is so outlandish that it defies all logic.

Ex-President Carter stated on Saturday that George W. Bush is 'absolutely the worst President in U.S. history.'

Excuse me, Mr. Carter, but I thought you had carved out for yourself that designation many years ago. No one since has even come close to bumping you out of your place in history as the absolute biggest mistake the American electorate ever made.

I remember full well the days leading up to 'the Reagan Revolution.' In the four years prior to President Reagan's landslide defeat of Jimmy Carter, the U.S. had faced the following dire circumstances:

--interest rates hit a whopping 21%, effectively killing the housing market dead cold

--inflation was running at 13 - 18% per year

--for the first time in American history gasoline prices reached one dollar per gallon

--in the 1978-79 economy, one dollar per gallon fuel put many truckers out of business

--America had become the laughing stock on the world stage, portraying an image of weakness

--this perceived weakness led to the former Soviet Union invading Afghanistan

--this perceived weakness also led to the kidnapping of hostages by the Iranian dictator

--foreign policy initiatives in the Middle East always favored Islamic extremists

--Israel was looked upon as a pariah (Carter still looks at it this way, as his latest book shows)

--cutbacks in military spending and the lack of development of new weapons systems emboldened Communists in the USSR to attempt to beat us in the Cold War arms race

--Carter brought with him to Washington the most inept team of Administration officials in the history of the republic, leading the late Senator Barry Goldwater to refer to them as 'numbskulls'

--Carter was not respected even within his own Party, as Ted Kennedy mounted a strong campaign to wrest the nomination away from Carter in 1980 to run against Reagan (Kennedy lost, but Carter was severely weakened going into the general election)

--Carter blamed the American people for our woes rather than his own ineptitude, referring to Americans as being held in the grip of a 'malaise.'

In short, by the time James Earl Carter got through with the country after four years, we were nearly in shambles both at home and abroad.

Ronald Reagan won the Presidency by reminding Americans of our greatness and that we could recapture that greatness again with the right leadership. He promised lower taxes, lower government spending, building up the military, and facing down the Soviet Union and our other enemies.

He also warned the Iranians that they would have hell to pay if they did not release the hostages once he was elected President.

As Ronald Reagan was being sworn in as President, Iran released the hostages.

My dear friends, if you think George W. Bush is the worst President in history, remember the Carter days. 21% interest rates and 18% inflation. Today we think 7% interest is high and anything above 5% is 'runaway inflation.' I remember all too well when it was MUCH MUCH worse.

Rest assured, the one thing I will NOT do is to allow a demagogue like Jimmy Carter to try to hide his dismal record as President by calling attention to George W. Bush. I lived through those years and I know what it was like. And as long as I have breath I will remind people that James Earl Carter came as close to ruining this nation as any other person in my lifetime.
