South Carolina College Football!!

Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina square off against the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky in a game that is currently under way at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.

Spurrier and company have a chance to go 5-1 on the season with a win today. The Wildcats have struggled with a record of 2-2 this season, but the team is much stronger than their record indicates.

All indications point to a hard-fought game on the gridiron today.

So far in the first quarter of play there is no score.

Alrighty Then! College Football Made My Day!

Alright, folks, give me your forbearance while I gloat a bit.

My Alma mater, the University of South Carolina, defeated the number 4 ranked team in the nation--Old Miss--Thursday evening by a score of 16-10.

Congrats to the 'Old Ball Coach' Steve Spurrier and his new rising star quarterback Stephen Garcia for a great game.

South Carolina is now 2-1 on the season and is showing signs of becoming the type of ball team Spurrier is famous for developing. I hope so! We are long overdue in this graveyard of football coaches.

It's College Football Time!

College football gets into full swing today as most of the major teams in the country square off against their opponents.

I admit I never cared much for the NFL. I had much rather see a college or high school team get out there and fight it out.

Here in South Carolina, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks played their first game of the season Thursday night, defeating North Carolina State by a score of 7-3.

The Tigers of Clemson University will play their first game of the season today at 6 PM at Middle Tennessee.

CLEMSON RETAINS S.C. BRAGGING RIGHTS

The Clemson Tigers have defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks by a score of 31-14, thus retaining for the Tigers the bragging rights in the state for another year.

Clemson's win puts them at 7-5 on the season...not a bad record given that the Tigers came close to falling apart mid-season with the abrupt departure of Coach Tommy Bowden.

But Dabo Swinney proved that his emotional, motivational style of coaching could save the day for Clemson and perhaps earn for him the permanent spot of Head Coach.

For South Carolina, the Gamecocks finish with a 7-5 record--not bad but far below the expectations Steve Spurrier had set for his team.

Next year Spurrier will have a team fully staffed with his own recruits. We will see if Spurrier's picks will give the Gamecocks a boost to reflect some of Spurrier's glory days of the past.

Both South Carolina and Clemson are bowl eligible and both will surely be invited to participate in the bowl games later in the year.

All in all, the season was pretty good for both Clemson and South Carolina.

Clemson Wins, South Carolina Pummeled

First, the good news. The Clemson Tigers defeated the Duke Bluedevils by a score of 31-7 in Clemson's Death Valley.

This was Homecoming Day for Clemson, and the Tiger fans enjoyed watching their team win one for Homecoming. This brings Clemson's record on the season to 5-5.

Clemson travels to Charlottsville for next Saturday's game against Virginia.

Now, the bad news. The South Carolina Gamecocks were pummeled by the Florida Gators this afternoon by a final score of 56-6.

Carolina's top-ranked defense was no match for the unusually strong Gator offense, and the most the Gamecocks could manage was 2 field goals.

The loss brings Carolina's record to 7-4 on the season.

Next Saturday is an off day for the Gamecocks. Their season finale will be Saturday, November 29 against their cross-state rivals, the Clemson Tigers.

That game will be played in Clemson, the time to be announced.

Carolina Faces Florida, Clemson vs. Duke

The South Carolina Gamecocks will face the Florida Gators in 'the Swamp' today at 3:30 PM ET. This major SEC game will pit the number one defensive line in the SEC (South Carolina) against the number one offensive team in the conference (Florida).

The Gators have been a powerhouse this season with a record thus far of 8-1.

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier hopes that his Gamecocks can pull off an upset against his old Alma mater and stomping grounds as the nation's top Head Coach. A Carolina win today will bring the Gamecocks to 8-3 on the season.

Meanwhile, Clemson will have its Homecoming festivities today as the Tigers square off against Duke at 12 noon ET.

Coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers hope to win their 5th game of the season today.

College Football Today

The University of South Carolina will play host to the Arkansas Razorbacks in an SEC matchup today at 1 PM ET at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.

South Carolina has a good opportunity to win its 7th game of the year against an Arkansas team that is 4-5 on the season.

The Clemson Tigers, fresh off their morale-boosting win against Boston College last week, will play Florida State in a huge ACC matchup today. That game will be played in Tallahassee, Florida today at 3:30 PM ET.

Bobby Bowden and Florida State have a clear advantage in this matchup, but the Tigers have dominated the Seminoles during the past few years. I would not be surprised by an upset by Clemson.

Check back with The Liberty Sphere later this evening for the final scores on these 2 games.

Gamecocks, Tigers Win

The Volunteers of the University of Tennessee were no match for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks Saturday evening as the Gamecocks totally dominated the game and won by a score of 27-6.

While Tennessee has struggled this season, South Carolina has managed to pull together its fledgling offense to strive for some balance with its nationally-recognized defense.

The Gamecocks are now 6-3 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Tigers of Clemson University went to Boston College and walked away with their 4th win of the season, a victory that would prove to be sweet to Interim Head Coach Dabo Swinney, who is attempting to salvage what he can of a near-disastrous season that has seen most of Clemson's hopes dashed.

The Tigers move to 4-4 on the season and still have an outside shot at a bowl game, although their hopes for the ACC championship have been all but doomed.

Swinney still has a shot at becoming permanent head coach at the end of this season, but he must prove he can win most if not all of the remaining games on the schedule--a very tall order.

Next Saturday the Gamecocks play host to Arkansas in another SEC matchup, and the Tigers travel to Florida State for another ACC game.

College Football Today--South Carolina, Clemson

With both teams fresh from a week off from play last Saturday, the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina and the Tigers of Clemson University are ready to resume play in 2 crucial conference games today.

Clemson will travel to Boston College for an ACC matchup that begins at 3:30 PM ET. With a faltering record of 3-4 on the season, Clemson desperately needs this win.

South Carolina will play host to Tennessee in a major SEC matchup that begins at 7 PM ET at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. The Gamecocks have a chance to pick up their 6th win of the season as they face a struggling Vols team.

The final scores for these games will be posted on The Liberty Sphere later this evening.

Univ. of South Carolina, Clemson Have Off Day

Both the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers have the day off today as both teams prepare for what will be a crucial final stretch of the 2008 college football season.

Clemson's next game will be against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts at 3:30 PM on Saturday, November 1.

Clemson desperately needs a win to help redeem its season that is teetering on the edge of disaster with a 3-4 record. If anyone can help pull them out it is the newly named Interim Head Coach Dabo Swinney with his infectious enthusiasm that has reignited the team and its fans.

As for the Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier and company will square off against Tennessee at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC next Saturday, November 1, at 7 PM.

With a record this season of 5-3, South Carolina is on the brink of either having a stellar season with at least 8 wins or else they are standing on the edge of a precipice getting ready to crash.

South Carolina has 4 games left, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and Clemson.

It is generally believed that the Gamecocks can pick up 3 out of the 4, but even if they split the remaining games they will still be bowl-eligible.

If they drop 3 of the remaining games they will wind up with yet another lackluster season.

But don't count out the possibility that Spurrier can pull off a 4-game sweep, giving him another 9-win season in his career. He has done it before.

South Carolina Falls to LSU, 24-17

In a scrapping, rough-and-tumble game involving many injuries, the Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina could not manage to out-run the Tigers of LSU.

Freshman Quarterback Steven Garcia got roughed up by LSU at one point, making fans wonder if he would be able to return to the game.

Garcia did return, but it was clear after that point that he had been knocked off his game. Gone was the sure-footed athleticism and the precision in passing that had characterized a near-perfect 2nd quarter during which the young quarterback led the team to put 17 points on the board.

But that would prove to be it for the Gamecocks. LSU basically shut down the Gamecock offense and defense during the entirety of the 2nd half.

The 24-17 loss now puts South Carolina at 5-3 on the season.

Georgia Tech Nips Clemson, 21-17

Georgia Tech came rolling into Clemson, South Carolina today with one goal in mind--to take advantage of the upheaval in the Tigers' program of late and beat them on their home field.

The game in Death Valley this afternoon proved to be a death blow for the Tigers as Georgia Tech nipped Clemson by a score of 21-17, putting the Tigers at 3-4 on the season.

Granted, Clemson was under enormous pressure today after this week's abrupt and unexpected mid-season 'resignation' of Tommy Bowden. The pressure proved to be too much for rookie Head Coach Dabo Swinney and his shell-shocked Tigers.

Today's loss will prove the end of the Tigers' hopes for an ACC championship and throw into question it's goal of going to a bowl game. The latter depends on how the Tigers fare for the rest of the season.

And thus, what began as a season of high hopes, expectations, and goals, is turning into one big disappointment for Clemson in seemingly its elusive quest for making it to the top.

Tigers, Gamecocks in Key Games Tomorrow

The Clemson Tigers and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks each play in key games on Saturday.

The Tigers will play in their very first game since the departure of Coach Tommy Bowden and the naming of Dabo Swinney as Interim Head Coach. Clemson will thus be under enormous pressure to perform.

Clemson squares off against Georgia Tech in Death Valley at 12 Noon ET.

Meanwhile, Coach Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks have a chance to continue a winning streak tomorrow as they play in a critical SEC matchup with No. 13 ranked LSU. South Carolina is 5-2 on the season and has won its last 4 games.

That game will begin tomorrow evening at 8 PM at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC, which will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Check back with the Liberty Sphere tomorrow for final scores.

South Carolina Stings Kentucky, 24-17

Freshman quarterback Steven Garcia proved to be the winning move for Coach Steve Spurrier today as the South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, KT, by a score of 24-17.

Garcia replaced starting quarterback Chris Smelley, who struggled during the first half.

Smelley was clearly off his game today as he missed several golden opportunities to pass down-field to wide-open receivers.

The Gamecocks were energized by Garcia as the young quarterback exhibited the athleticism and passing precision that put South Carolina over the top.

'The Old Ball Coach' Steve Spurrier has never lost to Kentucky in his entire career as a head football coach. Today also marks Spurrier's 100th win in the Southeastern Conference out of 163 overall career wins, the 3rd highest in college football history.

South Carolina now moves to 5-2 on the season.

Big SEC Matchup Today with S.C. vs. Kentucky

The Gamecocks of the University of South Carolina travel to Kentucky for a big SEC matchup today beginning at 12:30 PM ET.

South Carolina is 4-2 on the season, but they face a very strong Wildcat team this year. Kentucky is 4-1.

Kentucky so far has beaten some of the strongest teams in the Southeastern Conference. Steve Spurrier hopes that his Gamecocks can pull off an upset. His offense seemed to finally come together, as they demonstrated last week against Ole Miss.

Chris Smelley's performance in that game earned him the position of starting quarterback in today's game.

Wow! Clemson Loses to Wake Forest in Upset

The big question in the ACC this year so far is, 'What on earth has happened to the Clemson Tigers?'

At the start of this year's college football season the Tigers were ranked in the top 25 in the nation. They are now 3-3 on the season and have lost to at least 2 teams that the Tigers were expected to beat.

Thursday night's game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina only served to highlight the Tigers' problems.

The final score was 14-7, and Wake Forest simply shut down Clemson's offense AND defense.

Rumors have been flying for the past 2 years that Tommy Bowden's job as Head Coach may be on the line. So far, he has managed to stave off the wolves with some key victories.

This year he may not be so fortunate...

SC College Football: Clemson Loses to Maryland

The Clemson Tigers have lost one to the Maryland Terrapins in a squeaker, 20-17.

Clemson now falls to 3-2 on the season and are 3-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The South Carolina Gamecocks will play this evening at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia at 7 PM against the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Liberty Sphere will provide that score at the end of the ball game later this evening.
