The Demise of the Republican Party?

Since early 2010 this writer has warned Republicans that if Mitt Romney is the nominee in 2012, it will spell disaster for the Party and for the country. Conservatives don't like him. Ron Paul supporters, who are legion, will not vote for him. And Obama will use RomneyCare to hang him in the general election. It is logically impossible to defend RomneyCare while at the same time condemning ObamaCare. This poses a major hurdle for Romney that is nearly impossible to mount.

But at least one political observer with plenty of inside sources in the government believes that not only is the prospect for a Romney ticket a disaster for the 2012 Presidential election, but it is also a disaster for the Republican Party as a whole. Making Romney the nominee will spell the demise of the Republican Party, according to this source.

Obama administration cooks the books on unemployment?

In a stunning announcement that the mainstream media and the Obama Administration are using to tout the 'success' of the Administration's jobs growth program, the labor board's statistics show a dramatic improvement in the jobless rate for December, down to 8.5%.  The figures show that 200,000 jobs were created in December, which points to the fact that the Obama plan is 'working.'

But not so fast. A quick fact-check will reveal serious problems with the numbers released by the government.

Well, so much for THAT rumor!

Newt Gingrich attacked Rick Santorum today. Thus, the bright idea somebody had as reported yesterday that the 2 had reached a non-aggression pact appears to be entirely bogus.

On the other hand, disinformation in politics is routine. Gingrich may have attacked just to 'prove' that he and Santorum had no agreement, when it fact they do.

The proof will be in the pudding as we go forward.

Oh, and, by the way, Gingrich has dropped to 3rd place in South Carolina after having a big lead only a month ago. That may explain why he is attacking Santorum, agreement or not. He has to.

Beltway Rumors--the Gingrich-Santorum Pact

Politico is reporting this afternoon that Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have reached a mutual 'non-aggression' agreement, and have forged an alliance to prevent Mitt Romney from getting the Republican nomination for President.

It is also whispered that the two will launch a 2-pronged attack--one at Romney and the other at Barack Obama.

This means 3 things basically:

1. Santorum and Gingrich will turn up the heat on Romney in New Hampshire, which will cut into the former Massachusetts Governor's lead. Romney's negative ads in Iowa hurt Gingrich so much that he dropped from first place in the polls to 4th. The Gingrich and Santorum camps believe that turning negative on Romney will bump him off of his perch as the front-runner in NH, especially since it will be coming from TWO of Romney's opponents.

2. Gingrich and Santorum will shield themselves from attacks launched by their campaigns. With the alliance formed, the two can focus all of their negative ads and attacks on Romney, allowing Gingrich and Santorum to escape damaging rhetoric except that which will be launched by Romney.

3. The 2-man alliance can form a powerful united voice against Barack Obama, showing that the two can look beyond engaging in negative attacks on Romney to the ultimate prize, which is making Obama a one-term President.

Will it work? That remains to be seen. But you can bet that double-pronged negative attacks against Romney WILL cause him to lose support. Despite what Americans say about negative ads, apparently they do not believe their own words. The ads work extremely well as shown in election after election.

Bachmann leaves race rated number one

After her disappointing 6th place finish in the Iowa Caucuses last evening, U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann announced today that she is dropping out of the race. She leaves the race, however, rated number one in the Conservative Examiner's exclusive Presidential Rating Scale.

Bachmann had high hopes after she won the Ames Straw Poll in Iowa back in August. But she failed to capitalize on her momentum following the poll, and her numbers went into a free-fall.

Nonetheless, Bachmann leaves the race on top when it comes to her stance on the issues.

The Iowa photo-finish and what it means

It was perhaps the most dramatic squeaker in modern American politics--a photo-finish right down to the wire. The Iowa Republican Caucuses proved to be a politico's paradise as three candidates battled for first place during much of the evening Tuesday night, and with two duking it out for the win during the last 2 hours of the count.

Rick Santorum was able to capitalize on his momentum in the last days of the Iowa campaign, surging into first place for a significant portion of the evening. Romney stayed on his heels most of the way. And Ron Paul finished a strong 3rd within 2 percentage points of the top two candidates.

But it was Romney who came out on top in the end--by only 8 votes...

Ear to the ground in Iowa on the eve of caucuses

On the eve of the Iowa caucuses in which the very first actual votes will be cast in the 2012 Presidential election cycle, those with the 'ear to the ground' in the state are largely struck by the unusually large number of undecided voters in what is perhaps the most volatile political climate in modern U.S. history.

Iowans are slated to choose tomorrow the one they wish to be the Republican nominee to go up against Barack Obama in November. But pollsters are unanimous in their observation that well over 30%, and upwards of 40% of GOP voters are either undecided or could easily change their minds before casting their votes tomorrow.

Such a volatile climate led one longtime grassroots organizer in the state to observe that 'anything can happen,' particularly with Rick Santorum's late and unexpected surge into 3rd place in the polls.

Caree Severson, of Ames, Iowa has been active in pushing for a Sarah Palin candidacy but threw her support behind Herman Cain after the former Alaska governor announced she would not run. After Cain's exit, Severson joined the Ron Paul team.

How Iowa works as first test of Presidential candidates

Next Tuesday represents the very first test of the strength of the Republican Presidential candidates as the Iowa caucuses are held. The caucuses represent the first time that actual votes are cast in the 2012 Presidential election.

Today the final poll was taken prior to the caucuses, and it's results will be released by the Des Moines Register at 7 PM today.

Earlier polls taken Friday and early today indicate that the race is volatile. Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are running neck and neck in a dead-heat. Rick Santorum has surged, according to several polls, catapulting into second place on the strength of his support among Christian evangelicals--a significant demographic in the state.

Many Americans wonder why so much emphasis is placed on Iowa. Relatively speaking the state is small and overshadowed by surrounding states such as Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin...

Mainstream media floats notion that GOP race is 'over already'

In a curious piece in the mainstream media yesterday, E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post floated the notion that the GOP race for the Republican Presidential nomination 'may be over already.'

Dionne contends that with Mitt Romney's margin of victory in the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10 and a possible squeaker victory in Iowa next Tuesday, the former Massachusetts Governor would have the 'one-two punch' necessary to propel him to the nomination with very little serious opposition.

Romney has a 20-point lead over the second place contender in New Hampshire. And some polls in Iowa show that he has overtaken Ron Paul, although within the margin of error, for first place.

But Dionne is not the only pundit saying that Romney may have the nomination wrapped up....

Ron Paul defectors create group to train grassroots delegates to GOP convention

In an exclusive Conservative Examiner interview, a Ron Paul insider disclosed today that he has defected from the Texas Congressman's campaign. He further disclosed that a new organization is being formed that will train grassroots delegates to the Republican convention next summer as a means of strengthening the voices of conservatives who adhere to Constitutional principles.

Mike Ridgway, formerly of Utah and currently living in St. Louis, is a long-time Ron Paul supporter and activist in Republican Party politics. However, Ridgway states that the controversy over newsletters that the Congressman sent to potential supporters in the past contain a major stumbling block to his continuing to work in the Paul campaign.

Critics say the newsletters pander to racists.

Although the candidate himself states that he had nothing to do with writing the controversial portions of the newsletters in question, Ridgway maintains that Paul's refusal to do anything about those who did is tantamount to Penn State's former football coach Joe Paterno's failure to be proactive in removing those accused of child abuse from his staff, leading to his resignation.

Is Ron Paul the New 'Anti-Romney?'

Despite the fact that Mitt Romney has failed to garner over 27% of Republican support, even when he was the 'front-runner' in the race for the GOP nomination for President, the candidate still manages to hang on to widespread support. Part of the reason is the failure of candidates who have been dubbed as 'the anti-Romney.'

One by one the more conservative candidates in the field have dropped by the wayside. Bachmann began strong but then plummeted. Rick Perry has lost most of the early support he gained when he first announced. Herman Cain was forced out of the race due to some dirty tricks that appear to be purely politically motivated. Newt Gingrich is now showing signs of slippage in the polls. The one conservative that remains who has enough support to mount a serious bid, should Gingrich fail, is Ron Paul.

Romney, no doubt, has been the main beneficiary of the decline of the other candidates. But the untold news story within the story is that so has Ron Paul. Dr. Paul's numbers have done nothing but rise from out of the cellar as others have fallen by the wayside and as Republican voters have begun to realize that unless a conservative emerges who can garner widespread support, and soon, they will be stuck with Romney as the nominee.
