Torpedoing the Holder Nomination

Now that Senate Republicans have successfully placed a hold on confirmation hearings for Eric Holder, Obama's choice for Attorney-General, this would be a golden opportunity to inundate your Senators with emails, phone calls, and faxes urging them to vote against the nominee.

Holder's true colors have already been thoroughly vetted. The last thing we need is yet another retread from the Clinton years in the Department of Justice.

The Clinton Department of Justice is the one that gave us the Waco, Texas murders of the Branch Davidians and the Elian Gonzalez debacle, when hooded, jackbooted government thugs stormed the home in which little Elian was staying in order to snatch him from a loving family to ship him back to Communist Cuba, where Castro proceeded to make a good little Commie out of the boy.

And let's not forget the assault on gun stores by the ATF that began in earnest under the Clinton Department of Justice.

Eric Holder will be a nightmare for gunowners, gun retail, gun and ammo manufacturers, and the Bill of Rights.

Time to torpedo the Holder nomination. And if Obama sends up another one like him, we can just torpedo that one as well...until the President sends up someone who truly believes in the principles of the Constitution.

Border Patrol Scandal Deepens

Almost three years after being shot while attempting to smuggle drugs into the United States, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila has finally been indicted. Border Patrol agents Compean and Ramos were sent to prison for nearly 12 years in a set-up job perpetrated by U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, who withheld evidence from the jury.

The public will finally get to see the entire corrupt fiasco played out in the media, now that the illegal alien drug smuggler has been charged with crimes.

The thing is, Johnny Sutton knew the perpetrator very well. So did others within the U.S. Justice Department. They also knew of his criminal history and background. They were also aware that while Sutton was priming Andrete-Davila to testify against Ramos and Compean, the illegal alien committed yet another crime, smuggling more drugs into the country.

The jury in the trial of Agents Ramos and Compean never heard about ANY of this, however.

It's time now to pay the piper.

With renewed interest in the case, with withheld evidence being made public, with the perpetrator being indicted, and with renewed calls for Ramos and Compean to be pardoned by President Bush, the powder keg waiting to explode has just been lit.

The corruption of the U.S. Government in this case runs deep and wide. GOP Presidential hopeful and U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter hand delivered a letter to the President, urging in the strongest civil language possible a complete investigation to the case and the freeing of the falsely-accused and convicted agents.

The Liberty Sphere has maintained all along that if there is any one single issue that could become the unraveling of the Bush Administration, it is this. The Democrats' endless 'investigations' on the Hill are all fluff and pandering to the gallery. Their saber-rattling on these peripheral issues is an exercise in wasteful spending of taxpayer's money.

Yet Congress has essentially refused to thoroughly investigate the DOJ and Johnny Sutton, despite a few lone voices crying in the wilderness.

The reason for their reluctance is not far to find. Congressional Democrats are just as skittish as the Bush Administration about doing anything about illegal aliens, the Mexican government, and those who aid and abet illegals--a felony according to the U.S. Code.

If there is any integrity at all left in members of Congress, they will scream bloody murder to high heaven until something is done about this shocking and blatant travesty of justice.

Idaho's Ryan Horsley for U.S. Senate?

The mounting woes of U.S. Senator Larry Craig, R-Idaho, stemming from his arrest in a sting operation at an airport restroom, has fed speculation that the Senator's resignation may be imminent.

In the event of such a resignation, the name of Red's Trading Post owner/manager Ryan Horsley has surfaced as a possible replacement.

Horsley has risen to both state and national prominence in his ongoing battle with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The BATFE has targeted Red's for unprecedented and unnecessary harassment as part of its modus operandi to drive gun shops out of business.

As reported on The Liberty Sphere, the BATFE often uses something as minor and insignificant as a misspelled word on a license application form to revoke the sales licenses of gun dealers.

The gestapo-like tactics of the BATFE was visited upon Red's in a series of clearly oppressive raids designed to 'catch' the gun shop in some violation of regulations.

Shockingly, the BATFE claimed harassment on the part of Red's during its last gestapo raid due to the fact that citizens who were present at the time began to video record the actions of the agents. The case is now in court, and Red's faces upwards of $100,000 in legal defense fees.

Not to be outwitted or oppressed into silence by a rogue arm of the Department of Justice, law-abiding gun owners across the nation came to Red's defense. Gun rights groups such as the NRA, the GOA, and the JPFO have stepped up to the plate in fine fashion to give Ryan Horsley a national platform from which to describe the unlawful harassment conducted by the BATFE.

The GOA even started a legal defense fund for Horsley.

Horsley has also appeared on several national radio talk shows. The national publicity given to Horsley and his fight against the BATFE has even caught the attention of several in the U.S. Congress who are now demanding an accounting on the part of the Department of Justice and the BATFE.

So what, exactly, does all of this have to do with the scandal surrounding Idaho's Senator Larry Craig? Craig has been caught in a hypocrisy scandal that the GOP can ill afford in the year prior to a national election. Clearly Craig is a liability since he has made public statements denouncing the very behavior for which he was arrested.

Several of the GOP Presidential candidates have denounced Craig. Some GOP Senators and Congressmen are openly calling for his resignation.

Word was received late Thursday that if Craig refuses to step down, the Republican National Committee itself may demand that Craig relinquish his Senate seat.

Enter Ryan Horsley. Despite the BATFE's attempts at character assassination in its vendetta against lawful gun dealerships, Horsley has garnered a stellar reputation among the residents in his local area of Idaho. He has been active in local government, serving on various committees, and is known to be an honest, reliable, and trustworthy public servant and private citizen, as well as a reputable businessman.

No doubt the fact that Horsley has become a major figure in Idaho in his fight against a very unpopular federal bureau is the impetus leading to calls for Craig to be replaced by Horsley.

It is our view that if Horsley feels that becoming a U.S. Senator is the best way for him to fight for his beliefs, then his ascension to the U.S. Senate would be an excellent turn of events.

The Department of Justice and its gestapo unit, the BATFE, could hardly continue to conduct its vendetta against gun owners, gun shops, and gun manufacturers with a member of the U.S. Senate who knows first-hand the underhanded and illegal tactics of the feds.

Ryan Horsley's selection to fill the vacated Senate seat of Larry Craig, if and when Craig resigns, could well be the very first nail in the coffin of an unfortunate and dangerous chapter in the history of the U.S. Government.

We may actually live to see the BATFE de-funded, dismantled, and buried for good.

Priorities for the DOJ Without Gonzalez

Attorney-General Alberto Gonzalez has resigned. Perhaps now the Department of Justice can set about to clean itself up and streamline its operation, that is, if President Bush is of a mind to salvage what remains of his tainted reputation.

Gonzalez presided over what may well be the most corrupt era in the history of the DOJ. That corruption has absolutely nothing to do with the firing of the eight Federal Prosecutors, which the Democrats seem the think is of grave national importance.

Rather, the DOJ has been grossly negligent in enforcing the nation's immigration laws and protecting our borders. A rogue Federal Prosecutor by the name of Johnny Sutton has been allowed to conduct what amounts to a reign of terror at the southern border against our Border Patrol agents.

Two of those agents were falsely charged, prosecuted, and imprisoned for merely doing what their country called upon them to do. But they are not alone. Countless other local law enforcement officials have been forced to endure the Sutton witch-hunts against ANY officer of the law who dares enforce the nation's laws against illegal aliens.

Of course, nothing has been done about it. Sutton is a Bush crony from Texas. Gonzalez was a Bush crony from Texas. Both have come close to permanently and irreparably soiling the President's reputation.

In addition to the DOJ's failure to bring under control the nation's lamentable illegal alien problem, it has also failed to reign in one of the most dangerous, corrupt, and oppressive operations within the federal government, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Formerly known as the ATF, the BATFE, to put it bluntly, is simply not needed. It should be discontinued and buried quickly.

This wing of the Department of Justice has been the source of some of the nation's most memorable and unnecessary tragedies, such as Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound.

Today, their reign of terror is being conducted against gun shop owners and gun and ammo manufacturers.

Granted, these travesties of justice did not begin with the Bush Administration. Many of the present policies were initiated under George the First and exacerbated by the Clinton Administration. The problem under George the Second has been ineptitude and the failure to correct misguided policies of the past.

The President could do himself and the rest of us a big favor by cleaning up the Department of Justice, bringing to a fitting end the travesties of justice cited above--now that Gonzalez is out.

Upon hearing the news about the resignation of Gonzalez, one pundit quipped, 'This will have Democrats dancing in the streets.'

My friends, if Democrats are dancing in the streets over this, then Republicans and Libertarians are doing cartwheels.

Questions Surface on ATF Shutdown of Gun Shops

Washington, DC (TLS). Eyebrows are being raised and questions are being asked concerning the recent tactics of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms in shutting down large numbers of gun shops.

The main question is why is the ATF suddenly conducting this ultra-aggressive campaign against American small business engaged in the lawful selling of firearms.

That question becomes more critical when one considers that some of the oldest and most reputable gun sellers in the nation have become targets. If the problem were the illegal sale of firearms then such a tactic would be defensible.

But the shops the ATF has targeted, particularly within the past year, indicate that much more is behind the shutdowns and harassment than a concern about illegal activity.

Red's Trading Post in Idaho is a case in point.

The ATF has made Red's a target with sudden, inexplicable raids, demands to see paperwork, and the pouring over of documents seeking for one small infraction, such as a misspelled word, that would give agents an excuse to shut down the store.

So far, of course, the Feds have found nothing. Yet the raids and the harassment continue.

Red's Trading Post is one of the oldest and most respected firearms dealers in the western states. Established in 1936, Red's has been doing business in an honest, lawful, and reputable fashion for over 60 years. Today it is the oldest gun store in Idaho.

Apparently the problem with Red's is that it is one of the few gun shops in the area still standing. The heavy-handed, gestapo tactics of the ATF have succeeded in shutting down most of the gun shops in that part of the country.

The Liberty Sphere reported several weeks ago on the growing problem of the ATF. Instead of focusing their attention on fly-by-night outfits that clearly engage in illegal activity, the ATF has instead focused on shutting down reputable dealers by going over their required licensing paperwork with a magnifying glass, seeking for any minor infraction that would give them a reason to revoke dealers' licenses to sell firearms.

Several former gun shop owners report that their licenses have been revoked by the Feds over nothing more than a misspelled word on the application form.

These details, however, have already been reported and are fairly well-known. The real issue here centers on the rationale of the Feds in conducting these gestapo-like raids against law-abiding firearms dealers.

It is no small coincidence that the ATF operates under the U.S. Department of Justice, which has already been shown to be infested with serious corruption, including lying to Congress.

The vast majority of these dealers are average citizens, American entrepreneurs, who are trying to make a living in the U.S. by lawfully selling guns and accessories. They are not criminals. Most of them have never once committed a single act that could be remotely considered illegal.

Yet in Idaho, for example, the ATF has succeeded in nearly ridding the entire state of gun shops.

Why?

What is going on in the bowels of the federal government that has led to a policy of harassing gun shop owners out of business?

While we are hesitant to point to conspiracy theories, it is nonetheless important to remember that Democrats control Congress. Many believe a Democrat will be elected to the White House in 2008. And thus, the stage will be set for a massive assault on Second Amendment rights in this country.

Is the present policy of the ATF nothing more than a foreshadowing of things to come, a massive preparation for the time when gun-control freaks take over the government and unleash their ire on that part of the electorate that fights for Second Amendment rights?

In addition, not only is the ATF flexing its muscle, it seems to be increasing its power.

Several weeks ago a furniture store in Charleston, South Carolina caught fire, resulting in the deaths of several courageous firefighters. The fire started outside of regular business hours, and thus, no employees or customers were in any danger. Nothing was found in the ashes except for the ruins of furniture and accessories.

Normally the local fire department would handle such an investigation.

Yet the ATF moved in, seized control of the investigation, and pushed the local fire department into the background.

Why?

Needless to say, many residents in the area were left with raised eyebrows, scratching their heads wondering what on earth prompted the Feds to move in and take over an investigation of a furniture store fire.

Incidents such as these, along with the wholesale shutting down of dozens of gun shops, raise serious questions concerning the activities of the ATF and the federal government.

Until these questions are answered and we see a total change in tactics on the part of the bureau, we can only assume that what we are witnessing is the harassment of citizens by a rogue organization within the government that is intent on oppressing ordinary citizens into compliance.

But, compliance to what?

This is not about compliance with the law. That has been done. This is about compliance to a rogue bully of the federal government that is operating outside the boundaries of the law and the Constitution.
