A controversial pastor who heads what is perhaps the largest Southern Baptist congregation in the world announced Wednesday that he has cancelled his recurrent "presidential forum" which he hosts at the church during presidential election years.
The Rev. Rick Warren of the Saddleback Community Church near Los Angeles, which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, says he holds the forums so that members can hear a discussion of the issues "in a civil manner" from persons whose views are widely divergent.
In 2008, Warren hosted a forum that featured U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., who answered questions posed by Warren in their respective campaigns to win the U.S. presidency.
