One of the reasons medical care in the United States has been so successful is that the system has a long history of guarding the sacred relationship between patients and doctors. A sacred trust was built wherein a community respected and depended upon the local doctor who would provide needed care any time they needed it, day or night. The doctors knew their communities and residents so well that they were driven to give freely of their time, effort, and expertise. They cared for these people. They were like part of the family.
