Paul says secession is a 'deeply American principle'

Retiring U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, wrote on his congressional website Monday that the current growing secession movement among the states is a "deeply American principle" and is "a form of American freedom."

Paul made the comments in response to the fact that all 50 states in the union have sent a special petition to the White House requesting that the executive branch recognize their right to separate from the United States.

A state must have at least 25,000 signatures on the petition in order to get a response from the White House. But some states have more than enough signatures. Texas in particular has amassed 115,000 signatures.
