Michael Steele became the new Chair of the Republican National Committee on Friday as the RNC decided it was time for 'a new direction.'
Unfortunately, that new direction is the wrong one.
The choice of Steele is historic in that it is the very first time Republicans have selected a black man to be its point man. And Steele certainly has at least some qualities that are admirable, such as his desire to target the Northeast and the West for new recruits to the Party.
However, Steele is also known as one of the 'moderate' Republicans who are largely responsible for the mess the Party is in today.
Conservatives particularly take issue with Steele on some of his views concerning gun rights. He is no friend to gun owners, although he is certainly no arch-enemy, either.
While he generally gives lip-service to 2nd Amendment rights, he also supports gun control measures that characterize the views of the more liberal Republicans of the Northeast. This stance will certainly gain him no friends among conservatives.
Thus, the Party continues in its quest to marginalize conservative voices.

It isn't like we have a choice now. He's in and we have to hope he is what he says he will be.
The thing is, conservatives are on the brink of bolting the GOP. This gives them just one more reason to do so.
How much longer can the "GOP" continue to hold on pretending to be a major party? They have simply become a slightly less liberal 'mini me' to the Dems. I think it may be not far off when we will see the republicans implode, and some other party ascend to 'major party' status.
Unless, of course, Obama decides we only need the democrat party.
The thing that's scaring Republicans is that they know what's coming--no limits on immigration and naturalization under the Democrats. In their view, they are going to have to 'broaden the base' to appeal to these multi-millions of new voters the Democrats have bought off and are going to make citizens, just in time for the next election.
If they get away with this travesty, you can kiss goodbye the GOP. And yes, the Democratic Party will be the super-Party majority for generations to come.
Of course, this will happen no matter how 'moderate' the GOP becomes. These people will be 'beholden' to Democrats and will support them come hell or high water.
