The Romney Problem

Washington, DC (TLS). Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, R-MA, is beginning to look like a long shot as he aims for the Party's nomination. In spite of a few high-profile endorsements among the Party faithful, such as Senator Jim DeMint, R-SC, Romney has a major problem on his hands. Where, exactly, does he stand on the issues?

Romney is to be congratulated for his support for President Bush's plan for victory in Iraq. His traditional views on family, religion, and other ethical/moral values are certainly attractive to a large segment of the population. Yet Romney's penchant for flip-flopping on major issues is becoming highly problematic as voters seek to discover what, exactly, drives the candidate from the core of his soul.

For example, Romney has a history of being pro-life AND pro-choice, depending on the circumstances. Early in his career, he was avidly pro-life. As Governor of Massachusetts he backed off from that stance and took more of a pro-choice stance. Now that he is seeking to be the Republican nominee for President, he is pro-life once again.

Pray tell, how can one be so cavalier about such a critically important moral issue?

In addition, the Boston Globe is reporting another instance of the Romney flip-flop. Where does he stand on the 2nd Amendment? Apparently as Governor he soft-peddled the issue and even went as far as to state at one point that he was in favor of 'strong gun control laws.' However, now he is claiming to be a member of the NRA and a staunch supporter of gun rights.

Here again, where is the real Mitt Romney?
