Cato Institute: Downside to 'Universal Healthcare'

On Thursday of this week Barack Obama gathered a team of various persons to delve into the subject of 'healthcare reform.' And the Cato Institute immediately published a study from Feb. 28 as a response.

An excerpt:

Universal health insurance does not necessarily mean universal access to health care. In practice, many countries promise universal coverage but ration care or have extremely long waiting lists for treatment. Those countries that have single-payer systems or systems heavily weighted toward government control are the most likely to face waiting lists, rationing, restrictions on the choice of physician, and other barriers to care.

Is this really what we want in America?

Healthcare Rationing Hidden in Stimulus Bill

As we have warned previously, hidden in the 1.2 trillion dollar Obama-Democrat pork spending bill is a provision for healthcare rationing as the nation moves toward socialized medical care.

But now a U.S. Senator is on the case and calling for citizens 'taking to the streets' to protest the bill, particularly this horrific provision that will ration care for senior adults who are deemed too old and sick to get expensive medications and treatment.

And this is the subject of my column today at Columbia Conservative Examiner.

Few people were aware that the Democrats slipped in this provision in their rush to get the bill passed with little debate, and without giving members time to read the 1000-page document.

The shocking provision mandates a 'national healthcare coordinator' who will be looking over your doctor's shoulders to make sure he doesn't spend too much in your care, particularly if you are deemed too old or sick to 'justify' the expenditures.

Healthcare Rationing Hidden in Stimulus Bill

What you don't know about the details of the massive trillion dollar stimulus bill the Democratic Congress just passed can kill you...literally. Hidden in that bill is a provision for healthcare rationing.

Bloomberg provides the details of this ominous plan, which none of our illustrious political leaders, including Obama, bothered to tell us.

Further, the healthcare rationing contained in the bill is based upon a 'means testing' process whereby the cost of the care vs. the life-expectancy of the patient in question will determine whether or not medical care is provided.

For example, if you are a female 75 years of age with heart disease, it could be determined that due to the fact that your life expectancy is 81 years of age, thus meaning that you would only have roughly 6 years to benefit, an expensive heart medication that could correct your problem would be denied.

This is because under the Obama-Democrat plan, the government will make those decisions, not your doctor. And since this stimulus bill contains a provision for a 'healthcare czar' to oversee this process, all of the pieces are in place to usurp any control your doctor may have over your care, placing your 'case' under the control of government bureaucrats who will determine your fate based upon costs.

According to a special report at Atlas, many of these provisions are the ideas of Tom Daschle, who was supposed to be Obama's HHS Secretary until tax cheat issues surfaced. Here is some of what Daschle and the Democrats want:

What penalties will deter your doctor from going beyond the electronically delivered protocols when your condition is atypical or you need an experimental treatment? The vagueness is intentional. In his book, Daschle proposed an appointed body with vast powers to make the “tough” decisions elected politicians won’t make.

The stimulus bill does that, and calls it the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (190-192). The goal, Daschle’s book explained, is to slow the development and use of new medications and technologies because they are driving up costs. He praises Europeans for being more willing to accept “hopeless diagnoses” and “forgo experimental treatments,” and he chastises Americans for expecting too much from the health-care system.

Elderly Hardest Hit

Daschle says health-care reform “will not be pain free.” Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.

Medicare now pays for treatments deemed safe and effective. The stimulus bill would change that and apply a cost- effectiveness standard set by the Federal Council (464).

The Federal Council is modeled after a U.K. board discussed in Daschle’s book. This board approves or rejects treatments using a formula that divides the cost of the treatment by the number of years the patient is likely to benefit. Treatments for younger patients are more often approved than treatments for diseases that affect the elderly, such as osteoporosis.

In 2006, a U.K. health board decreed that elderly patients with macular degeneration had to wait until they went blind in one eye before they could get a costly new drug to save the other eye. It took almost three years of public protests before the board reversed its decision.

Are you sufficiently frightened out of your wits yet? You should be.

This is precisely what many of us predicted before the election...that under Barack Obama there would be healthcare rationing for Senior Adults.

Thus, if you are deemed too old and sick to be given care in a cost-effective manner, sorry pal, but you need to go ahead and die. This is precisely the attitude of Obama, Daschle, Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, and anyone else who supports such outright murder.

These purveyors of death have already desensitized the public into believing that infanticide is not murder, and so, what's the problem with getting rid of the 'useless elderly,' huh?

HEALTHCARE RATIONING FOR SENIORS UNDER OBAMA!

The Barack Obama campaign has been running false ads in key battleground states with the objective of scaring Senior Adults on the issue of Social Security under a John McCain presidency.

In actuality, Seniors have nothing to fear concerning Social Security. With growing numbers of Baby Boomers joining the ranks of retirees, you can rest assured politicians will not dare touch the money the taxpayers have sent into that system their entire working lives.

The real threat to Seniors, however, is in the realm of healthcare under a Barack Obama presidency.

Healthcare for Senior Adults will be rationed under Barack Obama. There is no other way to get around it, and here's why.

Obama's healthcare plan calls for extending medical coverage to 45 million who currently do not have insurance. Among that 45 million are 20 million illegal aliens--people who are not even U.S. citizens but will be covered by the taxpayers.

The nation's current healthcare infrastructure, i.e., doctors' offices, urgent care clinics, hospitals, outpatient surgical units, etc., is not set up to handle an extra 45 million patients.

This means that our healthcare infrastructure will be overwhelmed and inundated with multi-millions of new patients that the system will not be able to handle.

And, as is the case in countries that provide either national health insurance, or universal coverage, the only way to ease the strain on the overburdened system is to implement healthcare rationing.

Guess who will be the very first targets of such rationing. The nation's Senior Adults!

These patients will be deemed either too old or too sick to get certain forms of care, such as cardiac bypass surgery, or a new heart valve, or a joint replacement.

The so-called 'limited funds available for medical care' will be weighted heavily in favor of younger, healthier patients that can be reasonably expected to gain the most longterm benefit from such care.

Thus, the Senior Adults who have spend their entire lives paying into a system that promised them the best of care in their old age will be relegated to the back burner so that the money can be spent on providing care to 20 million younger illegal aliens and the rest of the 45 million or so Barack Obama insists be given coverage.

Healthcare rationing IS coming under Barack Obama. There is no other way around it. In order to do what he wants in covering 45 million illegal aliens and citizens, he will be forced by the sheer weight of the numbers to implement a quiet, unspoken system of healthcare rationing for tens of millions of Senior Adults.

And even if you are lucky enough to be granted the care you need, the waiting period will be so extensive that you could well die before you ever get that much-needed surgery.

Welcome to Barack Obama's hell.

But just remember, if this happens, most of your fellow citizens voted for it. This is NOT the America I learned about and grew up loving. We have been hijacked by a group of neo-Communists.

What Obama Won't Tell You About Health Care

Health care has become one of the central issues of the 2008 Presidential campaign, and Barack Obama has taken great pains to make you think he is on top of it.

The problem lies is what he has NOT told you.

Obama's plan calls for mandated universal health coverage for all. Notice I did not say 'all Americans.' There is a very good reason for that.

Obama's plan includes roughly 20 million illegal aliens.

Of the so-called 45 million Americans without health insurance, as Obama likes to say, what he won't tell you is that 20 million of those are not even American citizens.

The Obama plan is modeled after the disastrous practice in California of granting free health care to any illegal alien that shows up at the door of a hospital. Such a practice has driven the state closer and closer to the brink of economic collapse.

In addition, Obama's plan calls for no systematic effort to recruit millions of new doctors or the construction of hundreds of new healthcare facilities that will be needed to handle the masses of new patients who will overwhelm the present system under a universal coverage program.

This can only mean one thing--health care rationing!

And our nation's Senior Adults and the Baby Boomers who are set to begin retiring will be the victims of such rationing.

Decisions will be made to withhold care from Seniors in lieu of providing care to illegal aliens who may be younger and healthier.

Is this the kind of America we want?
