Fred Thompson Fires Up GOP Base
Delivering the most rousing and moving speech of his political career, former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, R-TN, hit a grand slam this evening at the Republican National Convention.
The speech, the gist of which was a personal testimony to the character and honor of John McCain, was the perfect example of why many of us supported Thompson for President early in the campaign.
This was classic Thompson. Logically and deliberatively, Thompson made the case for a McCain presidency with the step-by-step precision of a well-seasoned lawyer but with a passion that one only finds among those who sincerely believe in the message they are presenting.
Thompson vividly painted the scenario of McCain's capture and torture by Vietnamese Communists in such a manner that the entire arena fell silent. He spoke of McCain's refusal to give up information, only to be tortured all the more as a result.
Make no mistake, however. Thompson delivered plenty of barbs aimed at the Democrats who have chosen, in Thompson's words, 'the most inexperienced Presidential candidate in the history of the United States.'
He further stated that apparently the Dems think Obama is an excellent choice to serve side-by side with a Democratic-controlled Congress, which is 'the most unpopular Congress in history.'
The crowd loved it.
Thompson also took dead-aim at critics of Sarah Palin, denouncing the media's smear campaign against her, and lambasting the liberal Democrats' practice of late of going after her children, plastering their personal problems all over the news.
Yet not a single major news media outlet has investigated Barack Obama's direct connection to terrorist Bill Ayers.
The Thompson speech was precisely what the conservative faithful have been looking for. And I have a hunch that this is a fitting precursor and foreshadowing of what is to come tomorrow night from Sarah Palin herself.

McCain's Choice for Running Mate
If, indeed, it is true that John McCain will choose a running mate based upon no consideration other than who would make the best President should he (McCain) die in office, then his only choice will be Fred Thompson.
Thompson has maturity, gravitas, a clear grasp of who he is, including a realistic assessment of his own limitations, not to mention a wide variety of experience.
For these reasons Thompson is light-years ahead of all of the other possibilities, including Condi Rice, Joe Lieberman, Tom Ridge, Mark Sanford, and others.
Thus, if we accept the premise that McCain's choice will be based upon no other consideration than the one mentioned above, that means if he chooses someone of lesser stature than Thompson we can safely assume that McCain's reasoning is much more complicated and purely political than a mere concern about 'who would make the best President.'
We shall see...

McCain May Not Get my Vote, Either...
Although I'm still not well, I felt compelled to comment on the McCain bandwagon in light of Rudy Giuliani's exit from the race.
In a recent post I stated that I could not endorse ANY of the present candidates in either Party, but that I would certainly vote for any of the GOP candidates over Hillary or Obama.
This was before Rudy pulled out of the race, meaning that moderate to liberal Republicans have jumped over to McCain. The conservative base of the Party is still split between Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Mitt Romney, with none of them receiving enthusiastic support from the majority of this base.
This means, of course, that the moderate to liberal element within the GOP is having its way with the nomination process, leaving conservatives split and basically powerless, at least for now.
It occurred to me, why encourage the McCain bandwagon with assurances that he will get my vote, if not my endorsement, in a matchup with Hillary or Obama? This does nothing but encourage and reinforce his bad behavior.
I am not going to vote for John McCain unless MAJOR concessions are made to the conservative base, and that includes a complete repudiation of McCain-Feingold, an unfettered expression of support of the Second Amendment as an indiviual right WITH NO STIPULATIONS, and a promise of NO SPECIAL PATH to citizenship for dishonorable illegal aliens, who MUST get in the back of the line with those who are honorable enough to come here LEGALLY.
The ONLY 'path to citizenship' is the legal path already contained in the LAW!
McCain claims to have been a foot-soldier in the Reagan Revolution in 1980. If this is the case, then the former President must have rolled over in his grave enough times to creat an earthquake.
McCain's votes may have reflected the conservative principles of Reagan for the first 10 years of his service in the Senate, but since 1990 or so, he has shifted decidedly to the Left on various matters such as gun rights and free speech.
We conservatives won't have any of it!
Unless he reaches out to us with solid, verifiable promises to keep the conservative base of the Party intact, we will jump ship...throwing the election to Hillary or Obama. I have come to the conclusion that only such a threat will get the attention of the numbskulls who now run the GOP and who are running as fast as they can away from the Reagan Coalition.
On the Presiential ballot, one can add a write-in. A movement has begun in South Carolina to do exactly that. They are calling themselves 'The Conservative Party,' and they plan to type or write in the name of Fred Thompson on the ballot.
I just may well do that.
If McCain chooses Fred Thompson as his running mate, that would be a great development, but McCain himself is going to have to personally address the conservative base of the GOP to make assurances that he will not throw us under the bus when it comes to taxes, illegal aliens, gun rights, and free speech.
If he cannot do that, then even Thompson on the ballot won't be enough.
Illness has caused me to do a lot of thinking over the past four days. And I have determined that I'll be damned before I let a group of turncoat RINOS destroy the Reagan Coalition without a fight.

GOP, Bush to Blame for Splintered Reagan Coalition
The GOP has successfully splintered the Reagan Coalition by embracing candidates who in no way represent Reagan conservatism. Make no mistake, the Coalition is still there; it's just that there is no candidate who embraces ALL of its precepts.
To a great degree the blame for this deplorable turn of events can be laid directly at the feet of George W. Bush, who claimed the principles of Reagan conservatism but who governed as a neo-con who made some terribly awful decisions.
Thus, we blundered through the first few years in Iraq until General Petraeus took the helm. The BAFTE has continued its assault on gun owners and gun retailers unabated. Judges have been appointed to the bench who have run slipshod over the rights of property owners in favor of a highly skewed and lopsided view of 'eminent domain.'
And then, let's not forget Bush's most despicable transgression of all--his absolute, stubborn refusal to do anything at all about illegal aliens, protecting the border, and removing incentives for illegals to come here in the first place.
In many ways he has been worse than Bill Clinton on this issue, and that is saying a mouthful.
The ONLY two vestiges from the Reagan era that Bush has kept intact are the support for the pro-life position and the view that tax cuts are good for the American people and the economy.
This has opened the door for those candidates who are even further to the Left than Bush, such as Guiliani, McCain, Romney, Huckabee.
Even Ron Paul fails the Reagan Coalition test due to his dangerous, and frankly, frightening views on U.S. foreign policy, terrorism, and the War in Iraq.
Thus, here we are stuck with a bunch of charlatans who only give lip service to the Reagan legacy. Only Fred Thompson could truthfully lay claim to the Reagan mantle.
But the GOP and their major contributors apparently have decided they had rather have 'moderate' Republicans who all now claim to be conservative, rather than a true, conservative heavy-weight who had delineated in great detail his views on the issues, including those the others will not dare touch.
The fact that the GOP is now poised to give its approval to a big-government neo-con (this is all that's left of the viable candidates), while rejecting Fred Thompson, is almost unforgivable.
And for this we can point to the failure of President George W. Bush to keep the Reagan Coalition together, moving in the same direction.

What Now?
My belief that Fred Thompson would win South Carolina was more than just wishful thinking or baseless optimism. I actually believe that his views more closely reflect the views of the citizens in this state than any other candidate.
Yet for some reason or another, South Carolina Republicans decided to go with McCain, with Huckabee coming in a close 2nd.
The thing that makes this fact very puzzling to say the least is that John McCain is the very man who took a shellacking from GOP activists in the state for his support of amnesty for illegal aliens. Several GOP county delegations in the state were condemning Senator Lindsey Graham's support of the McCain plan to the extent that they suggested recalling the Senator and conducting another election.
A very telling poll tells the story. Those who voted for both McCain and Huckabee said they did so 'because they believed the candidate would do something about illegal aliens.'
Either these particular voters are showing their vast ignorance, or else both McCain and the Huckster hoodwinked South Carolina Republicans into believing they were strong on doing something about the immigration problem.
In actuality, Fred Thompson is the only one in the top three in S.C. who actually advocated for strong leadership on the issue long before McCain and Huckabee had a sudden 'change of heart.'
But, after all, the Huckster is a Baptist preacher. Nobody would expect him to lie. And McCain is a war hero. Everyone knows war heroes do no wrong.
Nonetheless the voters have made their choice and this is what we are facing.
The question becomes, what now? Do we fold up the tents and go home? Do we sit out election day? Do we consider a vote for a 3rd party candidate?
First of all, Fred is not out of it. I know that his advisers, including many of his supporters, are encouraging him to carry on until Super Tuesday. This would be my advice to the Senator as well.
Second, as for me, I think it is a big mistake to fold up the tents and go home or to sit out election day. It's not over until it's over, as Yogi would say. And, in the event of a brokered convention, Republicans could well turn to Fred Thompson to reunite the Party behind solid Reagan principles.
In addition, some have suggested that should McCain win the nomination, he could well ask Thompson to be his running mate to appeal to the GOP base and heal rifts within the Party. Thompson and McCain go back a long way in the Senate, and the two are good friends despite their policy differences.
Third, I will in no way, shape, form, or fashion vote for or advocate voting for a third party candidate, unless that person shows enough solid support in the electorate to win and not just be a spoiler for the Republican candidate.
So far I have not seen anyone, not even Ron Paul, who has that kind of support.
Thus, I will support the GOP candidate because, frankly, ANYBODY is better than Hillary, Obama, or Edwards. And that includes Giuliani, Romney, and McCain.
When it comes to beating outright Socialists who truly wish to rob citizens of liberties, including their gun rights, I truly do not care about some of Romney's less than admirable qualities as Governor of Massachusetts. He is for tax cuts, he is pro-business and pro-free enterprise, he supports smaller more efficient government.
Both Rudy and McCain share those views as well.
I can handle that any time, any day of the week over a European-styled Socialist who wants to give us socialized medicine which hangs like an Albatross around the necks of British citizens or who believe that government is the entity to cure all of society's ills.
Hillary, Obama, and Edwards each share these views which are absolutely deplorable and are a threat to our Republic.
With a Democratic-controlled Congress there will be nothing, absolutely nothing, stopping these tyrants from unleashing their voodoo magical cures on society by robbing the citizens of more of their hard-earned income.
At least with a Republican President there will be the all-important veto.
Finally, let's not forget Court appointments. Let's face it, my friends, with Hillary, Obama, or Edwards in the White House, along with a Democratic Congress, you can kiss goodbye getting Judges and Justices who believe in the Second Amendment as an individual right, Federalism, or any of the views propounded by the Founders of the Republic.
Someone needs to be sitting in the Oval Office who will stop the assault on individual liberties as perpetrated by the imbeciles who are now running Congress.
Think about these things long and hard, my friends. If you think that allowing a Democrat to be elected to the Oval Office while Democrats control Congress is a good thing for individual liberty and the Constitution, then I am afraid all of my appeals to good sense and reason will fall on deaf ears and blind eyes.
As Fred said in his speech in South Carolina Saturday night, 'Keep on fighting! Keep on fighting!'

McCain Wins, Thompson Comes in 3rd in S.C.
Arizona Senator John McCain has won the South Carolina Republican Primary, narrowly defeating former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee by roughly 3 percentage points, with 92% of the vote counted.
Former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson from Tennessee posted a respectable 3rd place showing, although it was not what the Senator had hoped.
Thompson campaigned hard in South Carolina in the 11 days leading up to today's primary, but apparently it was too little too late for a win. However, Thompson did surge enough to beat Mitt Romney, who came in 4th.
Rounding out the GOP candidates, Rudy Giuliani came in 5th, Ron Paul 6th, and Duncan Hunter 7th.
U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter stated following the S.C. Primary that he would be abandoning his campaign for the White House.
The question remains as to whether or not Fred Thompson will stay in the race. The candidate did not hint one way or another as he gave a vigorous speech before his supporters early in the evening. However, Thompson had put a lot on the line hoping to finish in first place in his home territory in the South.
Supporters of Thompson, including this writer, hope that he stays in the race. He is the ONLY true Reagan conservative in the 2008 Presidential campaign. It would be a devastating loss to lose his voice during this pivotal year in American politics.
But we are aware of political realities and that all-prevalent issue--money. We can only hope that Thompson has enough cash available to at least stay in the race until Super Tuesday.

This Is It: S.C. GOP Primary Today
Polls open in South Carolina at 7 AM this morning for the Republican Presidential Primary. No Republican thus far has won the GOP nomination without winning South Carolina.
The Democrats in the state will be holding their primary NEXT Saturday, January 27.
Although polls show John McCain in the lead going into tomorrow's primary, one central factor may well spell trouble for the Senator. McCain and S.C. Senator Lindsey Graham spearheaded President Bush's plan to grant amnesty to illegal aliens--a bill that the citizens beat down with their sheer outrage.
Although McCain and Graham have toned down their rhetoric concerning the issue after the voters made their anger heard, the two are still not really getting the message that Americans want to end sanctuary cities and incentives for illegals to flood the country such as tuition breaks and free medical care, and they want illegals to get in the back of the line where honorable persons seek to enter the country legally.
A vote for McCain is not going to do one whit to end the present disastrous policies toward immigration.
With that said, I have already said all that I need to say.
The Liberty Sphere will keep you updated on any pertinent, late-breaking info as the vote proceeds.
Check back with us later in the evening for the results. And, by the way, we will be casting our vote for Fred Thompson.

Down to the Wire: S.C. GOP Primary Poll Numbers
It's 24 hours to go and counting until the big South Carolina GOP primary on Saturday.
According to the latest statewide poll conducted by Survey USA and News Channel 7, John McCain and Mike Huckabee are in a statistical tie for first place.
Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney are tied for 2nd place in the poll.
Falling far behind in the low single digits are Rudy Giuliani, Ron Paul, and Duncan Hunter.
The weather may be a factor in Saturday's primary. For the 2nd time in 3 days a system is expected to move into the state bringing a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
McCain has polled well among senior adults in South Carolina. But they are also the most likely to stay home in the event of inclement weather.
The big news, however, is that 50% of likely GOP voters in the primary say they still have not made up their minds on a candidate. This means that in actuality the race is up for grabs, particularly among the top four--McCain, Huckabee, Thompson, and Romney.
Thompson has the momentum and has been surging fast, but the question is does he have enough time for his surge to take him to the top and surpass McCain by Saturday.
In addition, when the undecided GOP voters decide on a candidate, how many of them will break in favor of Thompson? My hunch is that a significant number will do so, but it is uncertain as to whether or not it will be enough for him to win.
Thus, this thing is going down to the wire, folks. Don't count anyone a shoo-in and don't count anyone out.

Thompson Contrasts His Record with McCain's
Seeking to make a final case for the fact that he is the one consistent conservative in the GOP race in South Carolina, Fred Thompson contrasted his record with that of John McCain in several campaign stops in the state over the past two days.
Thompson has already shown that Mike Huckabee is no Reagan conservative when one looks at his entire record. Now he has set his sights on the supposed 'front-runner,' John McCain, although no GOP candidate thus far can actually lay claim to that title.
Two major national polls show that McCain is ahead in South Carolina. But Thompson has been surging fast. And as Thompson's fortune rises, Huckabee's plummets.
While McCain is certainly good enough to vote for against the likes of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or John Edwards, his record is certainly far from being 'conservative.'
Yes, he has supported every tax cut since the Reagan Administration. And yes, he is strong on national defense, U.S. foreign policy, and the War on Terror. He also has a stellar record on abortion.
However, McCain's stance on other issues is highly problematic. Despite a fairly favorable rating by the NRA, McCain has actually voted AGAINST some key pro-Second Amendment legislation in his long political career.
His involvement in the environmentalist movement is also troublesome. He has totally bought into the political rhetoric of the radical tree-huggers that global warming is caused by human activity rather than naturally occurring forces.
McCain also made no friends among conservatives when he spearheaded so-called 'campaign finance reform' and proceeded to limit free speech in the process.
And his stance on illegal aliens has been disastrous. Despite his recent rhetoric about 'making the borders secure,' he still refuses to deal with sanctuary cities, tuition breaks for illegals, and forcing illegals in get in line with the rest who wish to come here LEGALLY.
One CANNOT adequately deal with the problem of the illegal assault on America unless these specific issues are addressed, which McCain refuses to do.
One by one, Thompson showed how his views have differed drastically from McCain's on these critical issues concerning our nation.
Thompson wants to end federal funds to sanctuary cities that harbor illegal aliens against federal law. He is opposed to tuition breaks for illegals. He is also opposed to any form of amnesty, including a separate 'path to citizenship.' There is already a path to citizenship for illegals, i.e., get in line and go through the LEGAL process like ALL trustworthy human beings would do.
In addition, Fred stands for a totally unfettered Second Amendment, just as the Founders specified and is against D.C.'s gun control laws in D.C. vs. Heller at the Supreme Court. He has a 100% pro-life rating from the national Right to Life group. He has also been endorsed by South Carolinians for Life--a state pro-life group.
Thompson believes that the 'global warming' bandwagon is largely a hoax that has been debunked and discredited by at least 400 scientists--a list which is growing by the day. And he doesn't mind telling you what he thinks about the 'Big Brother' nanny state that tries to tell us what to eat, what to do, what to buy, what to drive, and all of the other symptoms of those who have a Hitler/Stalin/Messianic complex.
In short, the candidate has done his homework. Thompson can demonstrate on the record how his votes have differed with McCain's.
Thus, we South Carolinians who cherish our liberty, unrestricted First Amendment and Second Amendment rights, the right to live our lives in freedom without the nanny state dictating to us our lifestyle habits, the simple and basic premise that any honorable person in another country who wishes to live here should be expected to do so LEGALLY, MUST support Fred Thompson in this coming Saturday's GOP primary.
A vote for John McCain is like a vote for Senator Lindsey Graham. The both of them are responsible for the hideous amnesty legislation they tried to push through Congress which would have made the illegal alien problem worse.
The outcry from the average citizens across the country resoundingly condemned McCain, Graham, Ted Kennedy, and President Bush for attempting to dump this piece of garbage on the American public.
We can do better. MUCH better.
And Fred Thompson is the logical choice.

Michigan Behind; On to South Carolina
As most of you know by now, Mitt Romney was able to win his home state of Michigan Tuesday night in the state's GOP Presidential primary, beating John McCain by roughly 8 percentage points.
Mike Huckabee came in a distant third, followed by Ron Paul and Fred Thompson.
Doing what he had to do in order to stay in the Republican race, Romney focused on traditional blue collar workers--'Reagan Democrats,' as they once were called--in order to contrast his views with McCain's insistence that those manufacturing jobs were never coming back to Michigan.
McCain also suffered from the fact that far fewer Independents and Democrats voted in the GOP primary this time, when compared to his Michigan win in 2000. Michigan allows so-called 'open primaries,' meaning that in today's case the voting was open to voters other than Republicans.
Thus, Romney had a clear edge among the more traditional Republicans in the state.
Now it's on to South Carolina for a key primary on Saturday. Polls indicate that John McCain has surged to the top in the state, pushing Huckabee into 2nd place.
The good news, however, is that Fred Thompson has experienced a super-surge in the last few days with his poll numbers rising by 9 percentage points.
Initially the former Tennessee Senator had experienced a 4-point bump in the polls following his impressive showing in the S.C. GOP debate last week.
With Tuesday's poll numbers showing a 9 point jump since the last poll was taken, Thompson has experienced roughly a 12 to 13 point jump since the debate.
Thompson has also begun running a series of new television ads in the state which show that his credentials as a consistent conservative far outshine the convoluted neo-con, RINO, and faux-conservative records of candidates such as Huckabee, Romney, and McCain.
As Fred quipped Tuesday evening, 'I was a conservative before the others started talking the talk. In fact, not only did I talk the talk but I walked the walk.'
This is a chance for South Carolina to make a difference by really putting their hearts into their votes. Thompson is the one candidate who most closely shares the values of S.C. Republicans and the citizens in general.

Media Spin in South Carolina on Presidential Race
The moguls of the mainstream media are at it again with their latest smear tactics against Fred Thompson in the GOP Presidential race.
In Sunday's Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a major Upstate S.C. newspaper which, by the way, is owned by the New York Times, an article appeared on the front page of the local news section which stated several times that Fred Thompson had 'gone negative' in his campaign strategy.
Not only did the article state that Thompson had 'gone negative' about Mike Huckabee but that he had adopted negativity as a campaign strategy for the rest of the way to Super Tuesday.
First, let's get this notion out of the way at the very outset. Thompson did not 'go negative.' Since when did pointing out someone's very public record as a Governor constitute 'going negative?'
This is Huckabee's definition of going negative. The Governor does not want his record discussed, since the record proves that his rhetoric concerning his days as Arkansas's Governor is at best grossly exaggerated and at worst contains some outright untruths.
That the mainstream media has adopted Huckabee's definition of the term is very telling.
A clear-headed, rational attempt to contrast one's views with another's is NOT 'going negative.' The opponent's views must be pointed out in order to differentiate those views from one's own.
Second, Huckabee himself has contrasted his record with that of other GOP candidates, yet to date no mainstream media outlet has described this tactic as 'going negative.'
Yet Huckabee went far beyond merely contrasting his record with the others. In Mitt Romney's case, for example, Huckabee went out of his way to attempt to portray himself as the 'Christian' candidate, the Baptist minister, in the very areas where there is yet a marked religious bigotry against Mormons.
This is, no doubt, exceeding the boundaries of discussing political differences by personally attacking an opponent's religion.
Yet Huckabee to date has gotten a free pass on his religious bigotry in the mainstream media in South Carolina. In fact, in Sunday's article in the Herald-Journal, no mention was made of Huckabee's ever going negative.
Further, the article not only focused on Thompson's supposed 'negative campaign' but Romney's as well. And the rift between Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani certainly did not escape the scrutiny of the writer.
In short, Huckabee came out smelling like a rose. The rest were portrayed as nasty ogres who say nasty things about poor little preacher Huck.
And, mind you, this was NOT on the editorial page. This was supposedly a news article.
The article also failed to mention that as an ordained minister in the Southern Baptist Convention, Huckabee is not getting much support from the denominational leadership. SBC conservative icon Judge Paul Pressler of Texas has endorsed Thompson. Richard Land, powerful head of one of the SBC's major agencies, has also expressed reluctance to support Huckabee but speaks in positive terms about Thompson.
Agency heads in the SBC do not officially make 'endorsements.'
The mainstream media, particularly anything affiliated with the New York Times, would naturally promote Huckabee. After all, he is widely viewed by Democratic insiders as the one GOP candidate that would be most easily defeated in the general election.

FRED HITS GRAND SLAM IN S.C. DEBATE
Republican Presidential hopeful Fred Thompson hit a grand slam during Thursday night's GOP debate in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. An animated, assertive Thompson came out swinging, and apparently it paid off handsomely.
Fox News, which co-sponsored the debate, put together a focus group made up of highly likely GOP primary voters to watch the forum together by television in Charleston, SC.
Before the debate, only 3 of the roughly 30 citizens who made up the focus group stated that they supported Fred Thompson. After the debate, the overwhelming majority stated that Thompson won the debate and that they liked what they saw.
When asked who was the biggest loser in the forum, almost every single one said, 'Ron Paul.'
Small focus groups made up of Republican voters are much more reliable in their assessments than the unscientific and asinine polls that are taken immediately following the debates, polls which are open to persons who may not be Republican and who will not be voting in the primary.
Thus, no matter what Fox's poll or anyone else's poll may say, the people who count--those most likely to vote in the GOP primary on Jan. 19--are the only ones who matter.
And these are the very ones that Fred Thompson won over on Thursday evening.
One of the reasons cited by the focus group as a factor in giving Thompson such a favorable rating in the debate was the manner in which he went after Mike Huckabee's record as Governor of Arkansas.
In our view, such a thing was long overdue. Huckabee has essentially misrepresented himself around the country in many various ways, including his background--claiming he 'has a theological degree.' We have already totally discredited that claim right here on the Liberty Sphere.
But beyond that, Huckabee has a penchant for glossing over the bare facts that he raised taxes, increased the size and scope of government, and supported giving tuition breaks to illegal aliens.
Thompson outlined each of these aspects of the Huckabee record, making it clear that although the former Baptist preacher can turn on the charm and make people think he walks on water, he actually has a very public record from his days as Governor of Arkansas that anyone can research for themselves if they are interested in the truth.
And that record shows that Huckabee is no Ronald Reagan conservative except for abortion and gun rights. Outside of those two issues, Huckabee is a big government Republican who will raise taxes and increase the size of government at the drop of a hat if he thinks it is 'necessary to improve lives.'
That philosophy is called 'liberalism.'
But it took Fred Thompson to bring the ugly truth about Huckabee to the national stage, since nobody else was willing to do so.
The South Carolina Republican Primary is still 9 days away, and it is still way too early to tell who will win. But if the skeptical GOP focus group is any indication, Fred hit a grand slam on Thursday night that may well propel him to the top of the heap on Jan. 19.
It's about time.
