The Clemson Tigers have defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks by a score of 31-14, thus retaining for the Tigers the bragging rights in the state for another year.
Clemson's win puts them at 7-5 on the season...not a bad record given that the Tigers came close to falling apart mid-season with the abrupt departure of Coach Tommy Bowden.
But Dabo Swinney proved that his emotional, motivational style of coaching could save the day for Clemson and perhaps earn for him the permanent spot of Head Coach.
For South Carolina, the Gamecocks finish with a 7-5 record--not bad but far below the expectations Steve Spurrier had set for his team.
Next year Spurrier will have a team fully staffed with his own recruits. We will see if Spurrier's picks will give the Gamecocks a boost to reflect some of Spurrier's glory days of the past.
Both South Carolina and Clemson are bowl eligible and both will surely be invited to participate in the bowl games later in the year.
All in all, the season was pretty good for both Clemson and South Carolina.

SHOWDOWN AT HIGH NOON
The big one in South Carolina takes place today at high noon in Clemson.
The South Carolina Gamecocks will face their cross-state rivals the Clemson Tigers for bragging rights.
South Carolina goes into today's showdown with a 7-4 record and with a golden opportunity to go 8-4 with a win over Clemson. This would be the Gamecocks' best showing in recent years.
Clemson goes into the game with a 6-5 record and an opportunity to place themselves in a strong position for a bowl game invitation if they beat South Carolina today.
South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier will use senior Chris Smelley as starting quarterback today. Spurrier said he hopes that Smelley can play in the entire game. This will be Smelley's last regular season game as a college quarterback.
Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney was asked if his chances of becoming permanent head coach is riding on a win over South Carlina. Swinney said he had not been informed of any such thing and that his only goal is to beat the Gamecocks and emerge from today's game with yet another year of bragging rights.
There is no doubt, however, that Swinney's chances would be greatly enhanced by a win. Clemson has been interviewing potential permanent head coaches from around the country.

Carolina Faces Florida, Clemson vs. Duke
The South Carolina Gamecocks will face the Florida Gators in 'the Swamp' today at 3:30 PM ET. This major SEC game will pit the number one defensive line in the SEC (South Carolina) against the number one offensive team in the conference (Florida).
The Gators have been a powerhouse this season with a record thus far of 8-1.
South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier hopes that his Gamecocks can pull off an upset against his old Alma mater and stomping grounds as the nation's top Head Coach. A Carolina win today will bring the Gamecocks to 8-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, Clemson will have its Homecoming festivities today as the Tigers square off against Duke at 12 noon ET.
Coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers hope to win their 5th game of the season today.

Clemson Loses to Florida State, 41-27
Interim Head Coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers gave up a heartbreaker to Florida State today as Bobby Bowden's Seminoles defeated the Tigers by a score of 41-27.
Clemson watched as its last hopes for playing for the ACC championship faded into memory, even though such hopes were a long shot at best.
Florida State's running game proved to be too much for Clemson's defense.
The Tigers now move to 4-5 on the season, and even a bid for a bowl game seems to be impossible at this point.
Clemson should view this interim period after the mid-season loss of Coach Tommy Bowden as a holding pattern until Dabo Swinney has a chance to rebuild. It is increasingly apparently that the rebuilding process will begin next year rather than now.
Swinney should not be held responsible for the team's woes. He inherited a troubled program, and a mid-season coaching change in college football is simply too big an obstacle for ANY new coach to overcome.
The Tigers play Duke next Saturday in Clemson at 12 Noon ET. This will also be Clemson's Homecoming game.

Univ. of South Carolina, Clemson Have Off Day
Both the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers have the day off today as both teams prepare for what will be a crucial final stretch of the 2008 college football season.
Clemson's next game will be against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts at 3:30 PM on Saturday, November 1.
Clemson desperately needs a win to help redeem its season that is teetering on the edge of disaster with a 3-4 record. If anyone can help pull them out it is the newly named Interim Head Coach Dabo Swinney with his infectious enthusiasm that has reignited the team and its fans.
As for the Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier and company will square off against Tennessee at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC next Saturday, November 1, at 7 PM.
With a record this season of 5-3, South Carolina is on the brink of either having a stellar season with at least 8 wins or else they are standing on the edge of a precipice getting ready to crash.
South Carolina has 4 games left, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and Clemson.
It is generally believed that the Gamecocks can pick up 3 out of the 4, but even if they split the remaining games they will still be bowl-eligible.
If they drop 3 of the remaining games they will wind up with yet another lackluster season.
But don't count out the possibility that Spurrier can pull off a 4-game sweep, giving him another 9-win season in his career. He has done it before.

Georgia Tech Nips Clemson, 21-17
Georgia Tech came rolling into Clemson, South Carolina today with one goal in mind--to take advantage of the upheaval in the Tigers' program of late and beat them on their home field.
The game in Death Valley this afternoon proved to be a death blow for the Tigers as Georgia Tech nipped Clemson by a score of 21-17, putting the Tigers at 3-4 on the season.
Granted, Clemson was under enormous pressure today after this week's abrupt and unexpected mid-season 'resignation' of Tommy Bowden. The pressure proved to be too much for rookie Head Coach Dabo Swinney and his shell-shocked Tigers.
Today's loss will prove the end of the Tigers' hopes for an ACC championship and throw into question it's goal of going to a bowl game. The latter depends on how the Tigers fare for the rest of the season.
And thus, what began as a season of high hopes, expectations, and goals, is turning into one big disappointment for Clemson in seemingly its elusive quest for making it to the top.

CLEMSON'S COACH BOWDEN RESIGNS!
The Clemson University Athletic Director announced this afternoon at roughly 5:15 PM that Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden has resigned, effective immediately.
Clemson officials stated that Assistant Coach Dabo Swinney would become the Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season.
A.D. Terry Don Phillips said that Bowden offered his resignation in a lengthy meeting this afternoon during which the coach acknowledged that the football program was operating under a cloud with its shaky 3-3 season so far.
Phillips indicated that both he and Bowden had approached the 08 season with the goal of winning the ACC championship and going to the Orange Bowl. But the Tigers' under-performance so far this season had placed those goals in doubt.
Clemson will buy out the remainder of Bowden's contract, which was renewed just last season.
Dabo Swinney played for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide under Coach Gene Stallings and has formed solid relationships both on and off the field with the Tigers. When asked if Swinney would become the permanent head coach, Phillips stated that the position would have to be earned.
Coach Tommy Bowden has amassed a respectable record of 72-45 during his 10 years at Clemson. His overall career record is 90-49.
Bowden is the son of legendary Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden.
