Associated Press: Getting Their Just Desserts

Along with other bloggers who are livid that the Associated Press would have the audacity to suggest that we pay them per word for quotations from their articles, I am interested in seeing the AP get its just desserts.

Several have suggested (Michelle Malkin was the first, I think) that we bloggers begin to charge the Associated Press, per word, for quotations they use from us.

The AP would love to have everyone think that only they have original news material. This is far from the truth. The AP has been known to quote from bloggers on a regular basis.

They quoted from Michelle Malkin, without her permission of course, because of the fair use provisions of the law which allow quotations of a certain length, provided credit is given to the original source.

But the AP wishes to go far beyond the provisions of the law and mandate harsh restrictions on the use of quotes from their stories. They will allow us 9 words. Beyond that, we have to pay them a 'per word' fee.

In response, bloggers across the country are boycotting and banning any story from the Associated Press.

This should continue. But in addition to the ban, bloggers who have been quoted by the AP should send the agency what Michelle Malkin refers to as a 'joke bill,' detailing how much money they owe the blogger in question for using their material.

In fact, since most bloggers do not make money from blogging, unlike the Associated Press, which rakes in millions from those who use the service, our 'per word' fees should be much, much higher than the AP's.

Say Uncle, a blogger in Knoxville, TN, quipped that perhaps he should charge the AP multi-thousands per word. Sounds like a good idea to me.

But alas, I don't think the AP has ever quoted anything from my little peon blog. That's too bad. All I would need is just a four-word quote. And since I would be charging them $250,000 per word, I would be a freakin' millionaire.

Sometimes life sucks...

Jane Blackwell/Cheerleader Scandal Update

Law enforcement officials in Ware Shoals, South Carolina dropped all charges against former Ware Shoals High School principal Jane Blackwell on Monday.

Blackwell had been charged last year with obstruction and lying to police in an investigation surrounding a sex scandal that allegedly involved cheerleaders and a former employee at the school.

A gag order on news reports about that case is still in effect.

Michigan GOP Primary Today

Today is the day for the Michigan GOP Presidential primary, the state where the father of Mitt Romney, the late George Romney, was once Governor.

Romney grew up in Michigan, but he has had a tough time selling voters on the notion that he should be the GOP nominee for President.

His biggest problem of late has been John McCain, who has experienced the comeback surge of historic proportions, rising from a dismal 4% standing in the polls to a 34% lead.

McCain and Romney have been running neck and neck in Michigan, and it would appear that the edge has been given to McCain, although Romney's appeal to traditional factory workers in the state could tip the scales in his favor.

This is do-or-die time for Romney. He will not win South Carolina or Florida. If he cannot win in the state where his family has had a traditional stronghold, then his campaign is immediately in trouble.

Only three candidates are in serious contention for the top spot in Michigan--McCain, Romney, and Huckabee. Of the three, McCain is clearly the best choice.

So stay tuned. We should have the results by early this evening.

Wyoming Republican Caucuses Today

Always committed to telling you what the mainstream media won't, we at The Liberty Sphere will keep you informed about the headlines beneath the headlines, and the information buried by supposedly 'more important endeavors.'

The Wyoming Republican Caucuses take place today, Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

If you had only been paying attention to the mainstream media or the Press, you would have never heard about this event.

Very few delegate votes are at stake in this event, yet Wyoming is a vital part of the political process, given that it is in the middle of one of the strongest Republican areas in the nation.

Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, and Mitt Romney have campaigned in the state, while the rest have placed Wyoming on the back burner. Rumor has it that Mitt Romney will do very well here, but there is no solid evidence to back that up.

The reason is that no polling data has been gathered. Perhaps the various polling organizations do not consider Wyoming to be important enough to invest the time and money.

Thus, the only count to be taken will be the actual vote itself, and Wyoming's preferred candidate will be chosen by the end of the process.

As always, the Liberty Sphere will keep you informed of the results of the Wyoming Republican Caucuses as soon as they are made available.

Second Amendment News Roundup for 9/7/07

Focusing on guns and politics, here is today's Second Amendment News Roundup:

Ready to get mad right off the bat today? Well, when you read the following news story at The McCarville Report, you just might blow your stack if you're like me. McCarville reports on the Court of Appeals overturn of the death penalty for the murderer of an Oklahoma State Trooper. The reason? The victim's wife appealed to the Bible. The Judges on that Court are anti-religious freaks of the liberal-judicial activism school of thought, no doubt:

Nicki also has a great piece about the difference between a 'right' and a 'need.' This is highly critical, for rights are not based upon what's needed or unneeded...a right is inherent:
