Home invasions are a gargantuan problem in modern America. More often than not, these incidents involve more than one person, usually two or three who are probably masked and carrying semiautomatic weapons (incorrectly called "assault weapons) that are capable of firing multiple rounds. Seven rounds would be a minimum for each gun, but most are set up to hold much more than that, 15 to 30 bullets each.
Each of the perpetrators is more than likely carrying more than one weapon -- probably a semiautomatic rifle and a semiautomatic handgun. In short, if they get into your home they will overwhelm you with firepower.

And that is the reason that a shotgun is still among the favored choices for a home defense weapon. Along with a decent pistol. Both loaded and readily accessible.
