Michigan labor unions claim workers must pay unions for benefits

In a victory for personal freedom and individual choice, the Republican-led Michigan legislature followed the lead of Wisconsin and Indiana in enacting new laws that strip labor unions of the power to force union membership as a condition for employment. Labor activists cried foul on Tuesday, however, and staged massive protests.

But labor union activists claim that the new law in Michigan is a direct attack on the rights of all citizens in Michigan.

Andy Potter, chair of AEIU's Republican Advisory Committee, stated that not only should unions retain their power over workers but that even those workers who refuse to join a union should pay dues for the fact that their work contracts and benefits packages were negotiated by the unions.
