Washington, DC (TLS). John Derbyshire at National Review has a most interesting article today about the immigration problem in America.
However, he says that a problem that is every bit as serious as illegal aliens is the fact that average Americans overwhelmingly OPPOSE a bill that their elected officials want desperately to pass.
In short, the elites and the commoners are poles apart on this issue. Increasingly, average voters are treated by their elected representatives as ignorant hayseeds who obviously don't know what's good for them.
And guess who's about to win this test of the wills? The immigration/amnesty bill proposed by Ted Kennedy, John McCain, and supported by President Bush and others from both Parties, has been resurrected and has a good chance of passing.
The voters be damned.
