New Poll Indicates Hillary In Trouble

Washington, DC (TLS). A new poll is making its rounds in Washington and beyond that shows Hillary Clinton in deep trouble. The poll also has some startling information for the Republican front-runners.

If the election were held today, both Barack Obama and John Edwards would beat each of the top three Republican candidates in head-to-head races. This shows that Giuliani, McCain, and Romney's support may be very tentative, even among Republicans.

However, when Hillary is matched with Rudy Giuliani in a head-to-head encounter, if the election were held today, Giuliani would beat Hillary in some areas that have become known as Democratic strongholds, such as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Hillary would not win a single Southern state.

The poll suggests that at this particular point in time, if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, Giuliani is the one who can beat her. However, if either Obama or Edwards are the nominee, the Republicans had better have a strong candidate other than Giuliani, McCain, or Romney to step up to the plate.

No doubt this race is still wide open at this point, as it should be this early in the game.

But let's look at trends. Over the past several weeks, Democratic voters have tended to shift away from Hillary and toward Obama to a great degree, and toward Edwards to a somewhat lesser degree.

Republicans, on the other hand, are beginning to indicate that they actually prefer a candidate who is NOT in the top tier, while hanging onto Rudy as their preference should Hillary be the Democratic nominee.

LIBERTY SPHERE INSIDER'S TIP: It is still very early and things will certainly change. But at this point don't count out John Edwards as an emerging powerhouse on the Democratic side. Voters are still enamored with Obama's charisma, but that will fade as the campaign moves forward and citizens see just how much of a political lightweight he truly is. The picture on the Republican side is a bit fuzzy but beginning to focus slightly on one major variable--the Fred Thompson-Newt Gingrich factor. If one or both enter the race, it is an entirely new ball game.

I must admit that when the word first got out that Fred Thompson might enter the Presidential race I did not know much at all about him.

However, his appearance two nights ago on Hannity and Colmes really impressed me. Hannity asked him specifically about four issues; abortion, gun control, taxes, and one other.

Thompson was very well spoken and very charismatic. His positions seemed very genuine. He stated he was against gun control, but most importantly of all he stated his support for federalism and small central government with low taxes. This is exactly the type of candidate that Republicans are searching for and that this country desperately needs.

I think Newt Gingrich has some very good ideas and in particular his view that we need the Presidential candidates to sit down and have some serious intellectual debate on the issues of our times is right on. Currently we are basing the election of one of our most important offices on 30 or 60 second sound bites. This is insufficient.

I do believe that if a Newt Gingrich or a Fred Thompson sat down in a serious debate or conversation with a Hillary Clinton or Hussein Obama in front of the American people, that Gingrich or Thompson would win hands down. Gingrich and Thompson for one would not have to hide their true views, beliefs, and opinions as would Clinton or Obama. That is why Clinton or Obama would likely be very reluctant to agree to such a serious debate on the issues.

Gingrich's and Thompson's views when articulated in such a format vice the sound bites they normally receive in the MSM would likely resonate with the American people while exposing the dangerous socialist and collectivist views shared by Clinton and Obama.

Of course, I would love Ron Paul to be included in such a debate. Even Republicans love to ignore many of the important issues he would raise.

Here is an interesting poll at MSNBC.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18421356/

Of the 10 Republican Presidential candidates, Ron Paul has the highest favorable rating of all the candidates with over 77,000 people voting.

It is probably because of his anti-war stance but I think it shows that if Paul were given a chance to articulate his views to America a surprising number of people would support him.

Paul has been mostly ignored by the MSM and by his fellow politicians in Washington. I do believe if most Americans had a chance to get to know his positions that Ron Paul would be a force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately this scares Republicans as much as it does Democrats.

Dr. Paul can be commended for his consistent and articulate defense of the U.S. Constitution in the face of forces in this nation that erode Constitutional law as THE basis for all law in the United States. His libertarian views are truly a breath of fresh air.

The problem that I have with libertarians, of which I am one, is that many of us tend toward isolationism in the world, which can be quite dangerous, especially in today's world. Libertarians also tend to believe in open borders and uncontrolled immigration. I have major problems with that as well.

These issues drive me to people like Fred Thompson, who adheres to the broad principles of small government and low taxes (both libertarian ideals), yet who also has a realistic view of the state of the world with regard to immigration control and U.S. foreign policy.

You make some excellent points about a series of conversations on the issues featuring Newt Gingrich, Fred Thompson, Ron Paul, and Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and perhaps John Edwards.

I agree that in such a forum, with limited participation by a 'moderator,' Thompson, Gingrich, and Paul would run circles around the three Demos.
