Malkin: 'The Witch Hunt Against Gun Owners'

Saluda, NC (TLS). Charlton Heston, the famed actor and former President of the NRA, became well-known for stating that the only way government could deprive him of his gun would be to 'pry it from my cold, dead hands.'

Heston could be quite profound and often waxed eloquent in his impassioned defense of Americans' right to keep and bear arms.

'The Second Amendment,' he once said, 'is America's first freedom. The Second secures all of the rest.'

That these words have largely fallen on deaf ears in many segments of American society is shocking, given that a mere cursory knowledge of history exhibits the stark truth that all of America's freedoms were won and maintained by the use of the firearm. Without this basic, inalienable right, no freedom is secure.

Heston made this point clear in a speech he delivered before the National Press Club in the mid-1990s, during which he chastened the media for its complicity in attacking law-abiding citizens for utilizing their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

In that watershed speech, Heston stated, 'Clearly, too many have used freedom of the press as a weapon not only to strangle our free speech, but to erode and ultimately destroy the right to keep and bear arms as well. In doing so you promoted your profession to that of constitutional judge and jury, more powerful even than our Supreme Court, more prejudiced than the Inquisition's tribunals. It is a frightening misuse of constitutional privilege, and I pray that you will come to your senses and see that these abuses are curbed.'

During this particular season in the life of the nation as we set our sights toward the 2008 nominations and election cycle, the mainstream media needs to be reminded of these words yet again.

Columnist and political pundit Michelle Malkin effectively and eloquently provides this reminder in her latest column entitled, 'The Witch Hunt Against Gun Owners.' Read her striking commentary here:

Mr. Lloyd-Morgan,

Great work bringing this issue to light, and reminding us to be vigilant in the upcoming campaign season.

One point, is Mr. Heston still alive? You mention the "late famed actor" and I do not recall hearing about his passing, and I'm sure the press would cover such an event extensively. Of course, I may have simply missed the announcement, in which case, please, carry on.

Again, thank you for pointing out this article, as I watch Ms. Malkin on Fox News but was unaware of her other work.

Anonymous,

You are quite correct. Mr. Heston is still very much alive, though suffering from Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 82.

The correction will be made to my original post.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, and for pointing out the error.

Martyn

P.S. Michelle Malkin is quite active as a syndicated columnist. Her columns are published in various newspapers throughout the nation, as well as online. Glad you have discovered her writings. MLM.

Dear Mr. Lloyd-Morgan,

I am glad to hear Mr. Heston is still with us. I had to ask some friends and do some searching as a sanity check as I began to wonder myself. I posted anonymously first in case I was wrong.

After reading more of your blog, I've added it to my daily list of sites to check. I have found it to be very entertaining and informative, especially since some of the news may not receive as much exposure without your help.

Keep them coming, and go Liberty Sphere!

Sincerely,

Ruben Aguas
